Just a quick question, I'm wondering if both ways to make a Catachan army are still valid:

That is to say - does Codex Catachans remain a valid army list/book to use despite the Catachans being added in the footnotes of Doctrines in the new IG codex?

I'm aware that newer rules supercede older ones, but this case seems a litle greyer as it's not exactly like Codex x V3 being replaced by Codex x V4. (or the BT army update).

I'm also aware that in a friendly, non-competitive game I can use whichever list I like for my toy soldiers, but I'm wondering what the thoughts are from the Dakka community.

cheers,

Both lists are valid, GW even put an updated version of Codex:Catachans on their website not long ago. (linky here)
The Codex:Imperial Guard list is more for jungle fighters with some support (tanks, heavy weapons etc.) while the catachan list is for pure jungle fighters maybe in a jungle battlefield.

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time...

Thanks, I wasn't sure which list to use since I'm making up a 500-pt CP type force to fight against my other small CP armies. In the end I've gone with the codex list, since it's so few points there's not a lot of benefit in spending so much more per squad as in the Catachan book.

Thanks much for the link though, I wasn't aware that GW had done that.

Yep, Banesord's right, there a 40K 4th Ed version of the Cats Codex on GW's site. Note that it has changed slightly, including removal of the bit where you could mix deathworld vets into the vanilla guard list.

That isn't Red Shirt as in under-qualified, under-informed and over-opinionated GW staff...
It isn't Red Shirt as in Manchester United...

...It's Red Shirt as a tribute to the brave men condemned to death by being selected by Captain James T. "Bill Shatner's Ego Trip" Kirk for landing party duties in the 23rd Century/late 1960s.
