I assault a transport and it explodes. Am I then stuck in combat with the passengers who bailed out?

If brute force doesn't do it, you're not using enough. |

No. Says so at the top of page 80.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

However, if you have enough surviving models surrounding the transport so that no enemy model can get at least 1 inch of space from your models, they are cut down as they get out I believe

Also true. Though worth noting that it is done on a model by model basis. So even if you don't completely surround the transport any models who can't legally disembark are killed.

In an explodes result, the passengers (and those within the area of effect) first take the S4 hits. Then the vehicle is removed and any remaining passengers are placed in the resulting crater.
Note that there is nothing about "disembarking" from an exploding transport. Instead they are simply placed.
This makes surrounding the transport and causing an explosion a lot more survivable than surrounding one and wrecking it.
