My chosen Chaos chapter is Iron Warriors and a while ago I bought some mod parts to make proper Iron Warriors from the CSM boxed set. Since I'm using the -ugh- Finecast mod parts, I'm going to be left with a fair bit of leftover marine bits. I was thinking of making those into a custom CSM Plague Marine chapter and was looking for a little input on color schemes. My initial idea was to make them look like deep sea divers, but then I realized I really haven't got the skills to pull off a good corroded look. My second idea was to give them a HAZ-MAT look. Any suggestions as to what sort of colors I should use for this? Yellows, obviously, but what else?

Rotting Sorcerer of Nurgle

Yellow as the main colour with black trim, cables etc.
Dark red gloves.
Not sure about the guns - maybe just black with rusty flash hider?

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

Thanks for the response. I picked up a cheapie Chaos Marine 3-pack to practice the scheme on. I've got one done and one WIP.
Pictured along with them is the Mantic Veer-Myn whose scheme I'm using as a base/guide. I'd like them to match, but I want some opinions on how they're looking.
So here's all three
I realize the guy on the left looks sort of gold, but he's yellow. He's got a very dirty look to him.
completed guy with Veery-Myn
WIP guy with Veery-Myn
Okay, so the WIP guy is obviously, you know, not finished. However, the way he looks now, that's pretty much how he'll be looking once done. I'm going to do his trim in gray like on the other guy and paint his horns and that's about it. He'll be pretty clean. So, which works better? Filthy, or clean?
When I move on to the actual models I intend to use, I'll be mixing some Chaos bits with 3rd party parts and loyalist parts. I'd like to keep the design mostly clean of those Chaos arrows.
Also, Bubber, thanks for the suggestion of doing the gloves in red. I didn't think it'd look all that good, but it actually looks great!

Interesting stuff, I'd be tempted to lean towards lots of bolted on iron plates, sort of holding in the seeping innards, after all they are iron warriors still. Can't go wrong with gasmasks on anything plague marine flavoured too, they're one of the traditional stand ins. Plenty of rust and chips would be nice too, and you'll have plenty of bare metal to work it into.

Thanks for the reply Ignatius-Grulgor. Your mention of seeping innards inspired me to add some more Nurgle-y details to these test models. I thought I'd update the first guy a bit and actually paint his base. I don't have access to basing materials, but I thought I'd try and attempt to at least make it look like they're standing in on a raod
The second test model is finished now too. I wanted to give this guy a bit more of a Nurgle feel, so I gave him leaking fluids. I actually have the splatters on the ground lined up with a trail coming down the inside of his left thigh, but I couldn't get a decent pic of it. Also, instead of the grey trim I used on the first guy, I used gunmetal on this one and gave it a red wash to give it a rusted feel. You can't really see it too well in these pics other than on his horns.
And here's another picture showing more of his leaks and puddles
And here's a shot of both together.
I'd appreciate any crtis anyone has so I can take them into account on the third test model.

Virulent Space Marine dedicated to Nurgle

It's funny that you're going almost the same direction that I am with my new army! I'm going a nurgle based army with hints of Iron Warriors inspiration in the design. You had mentioned deep sea divers. I know that theyve got a couple heads over at Maximini in their "Biohazard" line that are deep sea diver bell in inspiration. I think you could really dig em! As for the paint scheme. I'm running with a lighter cream tint (specifically a tone that goes from Deneb Stone to a soft layer of Rotting flesh) with lots of rust and metal wear.
it's a tiny bit more work to get the wear and tear on them, but REALLY worth it. Plus, most water damage and rust effects can be produced with washes. Give it a try! It's easier, in some cases, than you'd think!
Here's a link to those heads I was talking about earlier!

Hope this helps!

I actually already have the Biohazard heads. Those heads are what convinced me to actually make Plague Marines. This weekend I'll begin prepping them along with my other resin bits. Since these guys are a side project, I'll be taking my time on them. These guys won't be Iron Warriors though. I'm keeping my Plague Marines and my Iron Warriors totally separate. I tried to do an Iron Warrior Plague Marine and the results, well, they weren't very good. I've already got a name for this Nurgle chapter though: the Plague Dogs. I just gotta come up with an insignia now.
Actually, both of the above test models are using washes. I used both a brown and a red wash on both of them. When I get to the third test model, I'm going to try something different for the paint job. I'm going to try and adapt Girl_Painting's Deathguard guide. Try my hand at blending and whatnot. We'll see how he turns out. I'll post him up here along with the others once I get to him.

Ah, plague marines. I have alot of 2nd hand loyalist marines and AoBR marines and I decided to convert them. Spent months researching but now I have no time to do anything as school quickly starts soon here in Aus ...
Anyway I made a test run plague marine using blutac and here are my results. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/12/11/440094_md-Plague%20Marines.jpg
Anyway the secret to success is greenstuff, just smother ur marines in that gak.
