Hi all, this is not exactly a question about how the rules work, but what the RAW IS, so I found it to be fitting quite well into the YMTC.

I take it from implications made in various posts that the Cyclic Ion Blaster (Tau Empire) has some sort of special rule associated with it.

I recall as well pre-release roumors had it that it would become kind of a weaker 'rending' rule.

I buyed the german first print of the codex which states the CIB as an

18 inch       str 3        ap 4       assault 5          15 points       weapon with no special rule whatsoever(bu****t??).

I'm beginning to think GW just missed to print s.th. in the german 'dex, but refuse to wait one to two years till a new FAQ comes out or the weapon refference chart is updated. Any help would be appreciated....

Unfortunately German Cyclic Ion Blasters dont have the special rule.

The rest of the world is free to Cyclicly ion blast their way through terminator armour with ease.

In the English edition, the CIB has a rule that says, "Any rolls to wound of a 6 count as AP1, regardless of the target's Toughness."

The meaning of this can be argued. T does not relate to AP so the rule taken as a whole does not make sense. If you ignore the Toughness part, it makes more sense. Some people think the rule is a misprint.

Some people think the rule is a misprint.

It looks like they attempted to condense the two functions of rending into some new not-quite-rending Tau rule and failed miserably in the process. Until its FAQed, 6s count as AP1, no more no less.

The german WD has an errata for this weapon before the codex was even published. From what I heard the french codex has also a different writing than the german and the english version.

My take is:

RAW - If you roll a 6 To Wound, no Armour save.
Intent - I have no idea what on Earth GW wanted to do.

What is the German errata? Erratum, I should say.

Tau attempt at rending:

"Ha HA! My puny S3 weapon has rolled a 6 to wound against your mighty T7 Carnifex!
Now watch as I penetrate your armoured chitin and ..... and ..... and .... do absolutely no damage?

Oh No! We suck again!"

Assuming the '6 on the to wound roll, no armor save' is accurate, then it is just like the Divine Guidance Act of Faith for Sisters. Basically, it means you have a 1 in 6 chance to ignore infantry armor, but they dont want it rending because rending affects vehicles. It's really an infantry killing ability.

T7 creatures are The Greater Good's way of telling Tau to invent Railguns.

If in doubt, just get the English version, and translate it. Who's going to argue with the master codex?

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Any German who can't read English could reasonably contest the translation. GW ought to get the rules to be the same in every language.

The only thing that I could think of that made the 'Toughness' bit to the CIB rule make sense is that a S3 weapon can wound targets of Toughness 5 or 6 only on a 6. In this case, regardless of the targets Toughness and the fact that a six is needed to wound the target at all, the CIB shot still counts as an AP1 shot.

Maybe? That's my best guess.

From what I can tell, it is basically, its a Str 3, Assault 5, with Divine Guidance(see the Sisters' Acts of Faith). It makes for a pretty interesting anti-infantry weapon. It'd be rather good against Imperial Guard, and some use against Marines and Terminators(roll a 6 to wound and ignore that 2+ armor save).
