On the GW site there is this

"Speaking of that, you should make a point to detach the Gun Drones on your Devilfish and other tanks. They are part of most vehicle profiles, so they are effectively 'free' units. Plus, they increase the number of targets the enemy must kill to destroy the vehicle."

http://uk.games-workshop.com/tau/tactics-basics/6/

I never saw the gun drone like that before. Is this again a tactica with error or the rules support that? You hide the drones in the corner and you don't score any point for destroying devilfish until the drones are dead ?

For those without the codex the devilfish and pirahna are silent about that. The gun drones rules that may apply say

"drones may disengage in the same way as infantry dismount from a transport and form an independant unit. From then on the gun drones function as a gun drone squadron. "

"will never count as a scoring unit"

"are treated as passenger if the vehicle is damaged"

As usual, GW needs editors. That's it. The drones form an independent unit and you call it a day. Once they're an independent unit, the Devlishfish or Pirhana is on its own. If it blows up, it blows up. And you lose VPs. It's too bad, because that would have been a neat little trick.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

The problem is that when GW creates new units, they're not listing what type of unit they are anywhere, and the master list in the back of the rulebook doesn't (obviously) include Piranhas.

There is no unit type of "vehicle/infantry", so I think most of us will safely assume that a Piranha squadron is actually a vehicle unit.

If that's the case, then VPs are determined exactly the same way as any other vehicle squadron. The status of the gun drones makes no difference (whether they are part of the unit or not).
