The homemade fall colors are a nice idea. It's something different. I've rarely seen a standard autumn used as a base or terrain. I like it.

Topiarys are outstanding.

The green flock could use some yellow too it. And conveniently, you made some... Also a bit of very dark green. The contrast will add a nice sense of dpth to it.

How messy is this stuff to work with, compared to the store bought stuff. And does it adhere well to the bases?

I'm looking at it as a way to make foliage, like those topiarys, rather than as ground cover.

I only ever see it on wood elf armies, so I think it’ll be a neat change of pace.

It’s just as messy to work with as the store bought stuff. The trick is making sure you add enough sawdust to your acrylic paint to absorb all the paint and not too much where the sawdust color is too prevalent. You need it to be a good dry mix before you set it to dry out of the paint will just clump it all up. So far it all sticks great. I used regular Elmer’s glue to bond this stuff to the topiary framework.

I should have grabbed a pink color for making cherry blossom trees .

Ive seen people do that and adding in dish soap also would work, but this is the purest/ most basic route. And Lord knows I’m pure .

Well $4-5 worth of green craft paint and sawdust (free) has given me 8.5 cups of flock for Chobei to tend to.

I saw a cheap coffee bean grinder at Aldi about an hour ago, I’m thinking of getting it to make ultra finegrass, but I think I’m good with what I have right now.

Comparing cost to woodland scenic I got about 4x the quantity for half the price.

Also just for color comparison

Fall colors...speaking of fall, Chobei better put down his donuts and katana and grab a rake.

Seeing this I definitely need some red leaves.

your mind

Flocktober is awesome.
Catching up here... You are a MACHINE Theo.
Seriously. Wow.

Can't believe that you are passing on that table saw, however.
Imagine how much flock-powder you can produce with a large table saw???
Seriously.
You NEED that flock-powder production equipment.
Start buying the moss green in gallons...
Flock the basement!
Flock the walls!
Flock the driveway and seal it with Thompson's and a weed sprayer.
The possibilities are endless.
But it all starts with serious flock powder production capacity...
Just imagine.

I also watched an excellent YouTube vid on making flock from sawdust.
Forgot the name of the guy but I was watching a ton of his vids for a while, a British cat, super cool dude really, lots of great vids.
Maybe we saw the same one?
Dude looks a bit like a pirate... What's his name?

Now that I see you in action, your results, and with me remodeling the verandas here these days, I will have to be saving my sawdust.
The wife will be soooo (un)happy to see that!
I save and reuse everything - she hates it.
But as long as I keep it in my room and off the floor, she lets me go for the most part.

By the way, would it work to make grey flocks for rocks, gravel, volcanic ash, and even for asphalt surfaces?
What do you think ...?

Not where I should be

Luke APS. Is the guy you are thinking of. Will post link later. Is where I steal a lot of my ideas.

Flock can be any colour you want, and if you mix it in a pva paste and spread it on thick, you can get asphalt no worries.

Fantastic work Theo, I know how time consuming and the high levels of patients needed to make this lot. But it really is worth it. You have excellent results here.

I am messing about with metallic coppers for flock at the mo, really like what it comes out like.

They seem to be going just fine not diluted down at all, but might try it with a batch to see the difference.

All colors work...except white, but maybe I just didn’t give it enough of a try. It’s going to depend on the size rocks your looking for though as the sawdust is so fine that it will look more like schat (grade of rock, not me trying to get around the word filter) than gravel or rock.

Thanks Azazelx , I do enjoy the videos and he has links on his site to other great resources which have helped.

So I’ve just been in a daze the past two weeks. Not really wanting anything to do with gaming, so no productivity besides making some dark red flock and pink cherry blossom style flock. No pics .

But today I have a little urge. Besides if my son sees something happening maybe it’ll get him more excited about the train table.
So my 3’ by 3’ Test of Honour table is about to get its flock on.

The cat is very vocal about how he is unimpressed.

Edit: painted the table really quick with the craft brown oxide paint (2 tubes used $1.00 total) then quickly spread flock over it using a sifter.

The rough spot was where I spilled some unsifted flock and then tried to pick up the chunks with my fingers and brushed it with my hand . Once this dries (probably tomorrow) I’ll spray the entire thing down with watered down Elmer’s school glue and let it dry. Might hit it with some isopropyl alcohol to spread it evenly. Hopefully the results will look good.

Well, with Necromunda not tickling me the way I like and it being an ongoing sales item(not a one and done), I decided to keep going with Test of Honour stuff instead.

I picked up a few sets today including
Ronin set(1 metal and 5 plastic samurai)
Bandits and Brigands (7 metal figs and additional rules)
Bandits and Brigands swordsmen booster (3metal figs)
Daimyos Retinue (1metal mounted samurai and 5 plastic mounted Samurai)

That brings me basically up to date with all the sets except the samurai Warband which is just more plastic samurai and duplicate cards in case you wanted to have a three way battle.

Sorry for absence, to much happening this month with birthdays, holidays and other stuff.

Great news is my incompetent boss has been transferred (otherwise fired) and moved back to the east coast .

Hey! We have too many incompetents bosses already here on the East Coast. Send 'em to California.

Seconding what Yorkright asked about a few close ups of the flock on the table

I'm wondering if your Test of Honor ( I refuse to spell it 'honour' ) stuff can also be used for the Bushido miniatures game too? In case you want to try it out as well. I've heard good things about it.

I had to look it up again, but the bushido figs are bigger. The article says they aren’t, but their photo kind of blows it for them. I realize the stances are different.

Here’s a link.

Some of their non humans will work nicely, but since miniaturemarket doesn’t carry it I guess I won’t know .

I’m back

Sorry for the abrupt disappearance, too much on my plate, I needed a break.

Thanks too the guys in the miscellaneous miniature games section I have gotten hyped up again on Test of Honour, so I will be returning back to feudal Japan and Testing my Honour by completing many small challenges.

(Spoken in Monty Python Spanish Inquisition voice)
“Amongst these challenges are such diverse elements as....”

A Samurai Kings of War army

Two small sided Test of Honour basic samurai warbands (hopefully I can get enough free time to run demos)

And more terrain for the Test of Honour board

I will post some pics later today including ninjas that I finished this week, I just can never get pics of them without them attacking me .

Quick pics,

Crumby horses

Ninjas which I finished last night. Need more on the basing.

Some WIP samurai cavalry

All the pieces are very well done- the ninja are great: you've done a terrific job of using many shades to give an overall impression of 'detailed black'. The basing system for them is quite clever as well.

Well done and welcome back!
