Hey folks. So, I'm developing a new game and looking for playtesters.

It's a sci fi game, mostly using the same rules as BWG but with some differences. It will be a boxed game played on a board or board tiles, I guess kind of similar to Dust Tactics but with solo models not units of men. It's still mostly in the idea stage, and not coming soon.. it probably wouldn't be released till next year as it takes a super long time to make stuff especially going from scratch.

I'm still working on the preliminary rulebook and should have it finished in a couple of weeks. I'll also put together some basic cards and templates that you can print out, but you will need a board. The current plan is to have the box set come with 9 9x9" square board tiles with 1.5" square spaces on it, so the total size would be 27x27".. so you would need to have your own board like that, or a gaming matt, or you could make your own pretty cheaply with poster board and a ruler just for testing purposes. The combat mechanics and model stats are pretty much the same as BWG, so it's mostly the board game aspects that I wanted help with. But you will need to know how to play BWG. And you'll need your own models or you'll have to make some cardboard cutouts or whatever works for you. I have to check with my publisher, but you may need to sign a NDA too.

So I'm not looking for folks that just want a preview, but people who will actually play it and provide feedback and help shape a new game If you would like to help out please email me at info at blackwatergulch dot com, or you can PM me here

So how will this be different from the current Sci-Fi themed boardgames out there already?

Well, it will be played on a board, and will require dice!

Actually don't want to give away too many details just yet, want to wait until we have some good artwork done and maybe some 3D sculpts out of the way at least. Not too much original sci fi out there anymore, but I think we have a fun spin on things for this game. But we're focusing on the BWG expansion right now, so it might be a little while before we have anything to show off. Just going to be working on the basic game mechanics first and make sure it's fun to play

If anyone wants more info on the new game feel free to PM me, we're not really ready to share it all with the whole world since it's still mostly in the idea stage and will probably change a lot based on tester feedback.. same way BWG evolved

Have you ever considered just doing sets of optional rules for BWG to change the time period/genre? It would likely be much easier (and cheaper) than making and marketing totally new games. I like the basic system, and I think it would be cool to see some tweaks for different settings. Scifi would be definite, but I think a comic book superpowers/mutations deal would be cool too.

You could sell them as both low cost PDF items (like Ganesha Games does) or as fully printed books. The idea would be to allow people to use miniatures they already have for other games, but maybe its OOP, not popular locally, has a terrible rule set (40k), etc. The option for "official" miniatures would still be there, but would keep the pressure off your end from having to constantly design and produce another full line(s) of miniatures.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

Actually, that was my original plan. The rulebook was going to be "generic" with just the rules, and then each game world would get its own separate book about how to create gangs for that setting and a list of weapons.

But then, a few different testers were saying that it would be too confusing that way, and it would be better to do each rulebook as a full book with everything you need even if the rules are all the same.

And then I decided I wanted to make my own minis, and here we are now

I had plans to start with BWG, then jump ahead in time to moonshiners and mafia with monsters theme, and then a modern-day angels vs demons apocalypse game, and then a sci fi game, and then mix in a fantasy prequel. All of them being in the same world, just different time periods.

But, there's already a bajillion sci fi minis out there, I really didn't think I could come up with anything new that no one has done before, so thats when I thought it would be better to do a more small scale army kind of game with the same rules but more like 15mm scale, vs skirmish sci fi troops. Just thinking we could put together a cooler game that way, instead of doing the not-40k stuff everyone else does.

Ill agree that scifi has been done, probably overdone. Really the same can be said for a fantasy setting.

If your looking for something that hasnt been overdone Id say the mobsters thing is a good direction. Doesnt catch my interest, but not something you see everyday.

I think a modern setting would be cool too, again its something that isnt well represented in gaming. Angels vs demons could be cool as well. Id like to see a decent comic book ruleset as well.

Then theres the big question(s)...why arent those other themes being done very much? Is it because the majority of gamers only really want scifi and fantasy? Are the other themes just not broad enough in appeal to support full game systems?

I feel the same way when I play video games. Every video game is either WWII or Modern... Why do we have WWII but not the Korean War? (it's the same weapons and everything) Why do we have Red Dead Redemption but not the Boers in South Africa?

I could totally see a Blackwater Gulch done up as a version of "Lawless." They could have Model T cars and cargo trucks. You could make a gang of angry Mennonites with axes, out to smash the stills... or a gang of Skinwalkers that have been reduced to being mangy dogs after years of neglect and fire-water.

Yeah I think those other genres are just too "nichey" so game developers think it's too risky and stuff. But maybe it's just waiting for someone to come along and do it right.

But then I think a lot of it also is just us nerds love our sci fi and fantasy stuff If it were up to me and I had a bazillion dollars for the licensing I'd make an Aliens game

It also doesn't help that people don't tend to learn about some of the 'less popular' events and battles these days.

Interestingly enough, you'll see the occasional Maori land wars here in NZ, but that would be it. Maybe if there was a little more education it might work.

By this logic, I'm hoping that Boardwalk Empire will lead to a rise in games set during the inter-war period. There is certainly a lot of material to work with.
