I dont have the WD and cant find the entry anywhere - does the librarian count as an IC while hes part of the dquad for close combat purposes?

If the article specifies him as an IC anywhere, he always counts as an IC, whether that be for movement, shooting, or combat. Unless otherwise specified, an IC is an IC.

Now, if the article never identifies him as an IC, well, then I don't even know where I'd begin.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Went digging for it and found the rules. WD258- July 2001.

Doesn't say Independent Character in the rules, so he actually will fight as just another member of the squad, it appears. Just with a better statline. Like the Farseers in a Seer Council.

Funky.

Yeah, funky, like "could you make a last man standing test with your librarian" kinda funky.
Like "ok, now i'm going to use my hidden Force weapon" kinda funky.
Like "Hey, you've got three dudes and I just did three power fist wounds, so Libbies deader than disco" kinda funky.
Wow, bab juju.

Cheers

No hidden Force Weapon, unfortunately, as the Deathwatch Librarian doesn't come equipped with one. He is allowed select items from the space marine armoury, but there is no points cost for Force Weapons in the space marine armoury anymore. He does, on the other hand, come with the psychic power "Smite"...

... which doesn't exist anymore.

Ugh.

Dom, I think you're probably better off using the Daemonhunters rules to get an allied squad of Grey Knights as opposed to the Deathwatch. The rules are so dated that people may look as them somewhat askance.

That is because you are looking at the 3rd edition rules for Deathwatch marines. The 4th edition rules are in WD305. Amongst the things they say are the following- "The Captain (or Librarian) is an Independant Character and may not leave the squad. If all the members of his squad are killed, he acts as an Independant Character as normal." and "The Captain can be upgraded to a Librarian (Codicier) at +40 points. As a Librarian, he is equipped with a force weapon and psychic hood. He may use the Psychic Power Storm of the Emperor's Wrath."

So yes he is an IC. Yes he has a force weapon, hood, and usable power. But, no, the force weapon isn't hidden. Seems like a bargain though, in the last edition the force weapon alone was 40 points.

That makes 'ol blackie the acid-wash jeans of Librarians dunnit? I bet all the other Librarians snicker when he walks by in the hall too. Poor 'ol blackie.

Well spotted, CC! I can't seem to find my WD305. 302, 303 and 306, yes. No 305. Glad to hear they did update it.

Thanks Ragnar for doing the legwork - this was helpful. I think in the end - Ill take your advice and scrap the Deathwatch from the list - Ill keep them around for fun games though.
