My Space Marine Terminator will be converted to having eyes that lite-up and maybe a weapon with a glow of light, I don't know. I've just bought the electronics that should be nessesary for this project, I'll probably need to increase my base Height, to incorporate the battery & LED light source. I'll have to make some more purchases, of Fiber-Optic, Items to get all this accomplished. The main consideration for this is that the model has to be Moblie, or else he couldn't be moved in the game, Minature Electronics & a power source will do this, any other Electronic converters out there ..... A good Friend of mine put me onto this and the 'ol brain is churning with ideals on this, I'm also gonna install lighting in my City Of Doom Buildings, I think that would be easier. ( plenty of places for the Batteries) But with me I always do the hard part first ..... that makes the rest of the conversions easy .....

Now I'll be making or modifiying all five of my terminators, I'll start with drilling down through his legs, to run the fiber-optics ......

I know I haven't scraped my mold lines and haven't drilled the gun yet this model is in the rough stages at the current time, plus i need to touch up his helmet.
That's all I have for now .... I think this will be a great project if I can get it done .... I'll be waiting for my suppiles to arrive from my suppiler .....
Tune in next time .... Same SP Marine Channel .... Some time next week ...... Wish me luck with this project.

Here's a pic of my Terminator ............ before start of project .....

There's enough space in a Termy head/chest for an LED. You need a tiny open/closed switch, a resistor (value is dependent on your LED color, IIRC, and if you're fine with the LED eventually burning out you can skip that entirely), and a watch battery. If you're diligent about removing the battery, you can even skip the switch.

Fiber may be overkill or more trouble than it's worth.

I think your time would be better spent improving your paint jobs and removing mold lines before branching out into more advanced modelling and lighting.

I think putting LED's on models are awesome to see. Of course, I wouldnt have the time or patiance (or is that know how?) to do it myself I enjoy seeing them on other poeples models. Keep going mate.

Geez ....Tough Crowd ..... I will try to answer all your remarks one by one .......

@Matney X .... I didn't tell you that my other Skills I completed Control Data's Mainframe School, in the Seventy's, since then Military electronics, serveral Field service Jobs, even International field Service ..... So I'm very skilled in electronics ..... I was told by one of the Greenville gamers to try this ... so this is what I'm doing ....I watched one guy on Dakka tutorial on LED's in the chest, lots of Light escapes and has to be Masked ... so that's why Fiber optics, is the way I'm going on this one.

@Rhich ...... Thanks! for your vote of confidence

@LordOfSmurfs..... " I know I haven't scraped my mold lines and haven't drilled the gun yet this model is in the rough stages at the current time, plus I need to touch up his helmet." We can't all start out as Evy metals, this is about the second one I painted, I wasn't happy with him either, He's just one I'm starting with ..... and since he's out of the Black Reach set .... He's also not gonna be easy to modify, but I love a challenge ........ Geez Rivet counter's in wargaming?

@kb305 ...... Could be don't know ..... One man said he had to turn his rhino's headlights off as the opponet was so distracted and couldn't think of a play .... So I guess it goes along with taunting ....... I Don't know what One of these would sell for on eBay!

I think it's all about the implementation. I think a mistake people often make when putting LED lights in their model is putting the LED directly where the light is supposed to be. So instead of getting a nice diffused glow, they "look" like LEDs and can end up looking like toys. Same with vehicles, if a car/tank has headlights/spotlights, people put LEDs where the headlights should be, but they look nothing like headlights because they aren't directed like headlights are and are the wrong scale.

Personally I think LEDs in models can look cool, but it's hard to make it not just look like a toy and actually properly simulate the light as it should look in reality.

Interested to see this go forward. I have always considered adding LED to my Big Meks for fun.

Some people sculpt, some paint, some convert, and others do fun stuff with electronics like drivable land raiders or LED lights. Different strokes for different folks.

Well, that changes things. I was assuming (making an ass out of myself) that you weren't that experienced in electronics, so I gave the easiest option as opposed to the best. I'm excited to see where this goes.

Well this is turning out to be a very interesting area of conversion and modeling ..... I can't keep up with your posts .... so I like to answer eack one in one reply .... as a Member of another Model building forum sometimes the posts get lost on the pervious page .... so here goes ......

I started drilling that Terminator this morning .... I came out of his leg right below his hip .... but that's Ok as a little green stuff will fix that when I get my Fiber optics .... due to the small size of the LEDs I will be able to put everything in the base of the model ..... I don't think it will have to grow any in height ..... I really don't know yet, as the stuff is on it's way .... those tiny little LEDs are very bright so they will have to have a resistor on them to turn the brightness down a bit, then after I test the circuit I will use some liquid electric tape to stop the light from coming out of the base ..... then a reed switch (On/Off) incase my opponent doesn't like the terms starring at them with glowing eyes ...... Now in order to keep his eyes from being too bright, I plan to drill His helmet lenses a little and bury the end of the fiber under some clear parts cement, then cover that with a wash for color ..... that should defuse then end fiber glow ..... and light the whole helmet lens

@AllSeeingSkink ..... You've got the same opinion as me .... this is what I'm trying to accomplish a diffussed glow so to speak .... (See above) .... Thanks for your input .....

@nkelsch ....... Drivable LR'r Kewl !!! I've thought of a draw bridge/opening doors for my City of Doom buildings all this wasn't possible when a was modeling as a child .... Now I've been back into it for about 5 years now .... then Games-workshop gave me a call and my Hobby changed ...... Don't get me wrong still considering a Ork train .....

@Matney X ...... Sorry, about that I really didn't mean to sound so Curt !! and to assume makes a ass out of you & me, It's hard to type things right so they sound as they were intended .... Trust me on that just had a experiance last week with that still haven't gotten over that Guy's Rant .... He actually wrote a book about me on a open Forum ............

so sounds like this is a worthwhile project can't wait til the supplies arrive .... maybe tommorow ...?

Ok seems like time for alittle update on my work ..... I drilled up through one of his straightest legs ..... It came out 1st time right above kneecap ..... so I tried to drill down though his innerards ... I came out in the back under his side power shield, then I drilled through to the front leg ...... this will have to be cleaned up & green-stuffed when the fiber optics are installed ...... I also drilled the eyes out ..... I also think I'll include some Bollter glow in the skull on the base .... Now we wait for LEDs & fibers to arrive from Canada, this could take awhile due to Customs ..... Here's some Update pics ..... He's been disassembled for the drilling process ......

Hey guys been awhile, but here's new photos on my project ..... while I had them down for a do over .... I also Magnetized all thier arms, which I'll do to my entire army ..... Now these are from the Black reach set and aren't as easy to work with. The Magnets worked great I used 4 X 1/16 x 1/32 in each arm which I will change in the future. There are three in each arm & 1 in the Torso. Also I ran the fiber Optics up through the leg, tested with a flashlight & as you see they work ..... That's all folks next the electronics ...... My battery holders are quite large and will raise the base about twice the height which I hope will be Ok.

I can't believe that you would try with metal models. Are they even still hollow?

very nice job on the LED lighting on your model cygnnus ...... did you have trouble with light leakage in the torso of it ..... that's the thing I'm trying to stay away from, i'm thinking with the fiber use that would be keep to a minimum, it's just that I learned electronics a log time ago ..... we wish I'd paid more attention in science & physics classes when I was younger ...... Now time to put my training to good use .... after all I keep getting all kinds of advice from young whipper snappers who think they know the meaning of Life .... LOL all I have to do now is find my reed switches figure out how to get a light in the base and seal that so the light doesn't show......Think I'll have to go to wally-world to see what size batteries come in the three volt ... i really need smaller than what I have ......

Very little trouble with light leakage as I "embedded" the LEDs in a ball of kneadatite to help hold them in place. But that wasn't a real concern of mine since it looks okay to have a bit of light leaking out of joints in the armor since they're 1kSons...

I didn't put switches in mine. To turn the light off, you just pop the battery out. I used CR2032 batteries (20mm diameter and 3.2mm height) , a low profile battery clip, and had some custom-cut wooden bases that were designed to hold the clip. They're slightly larger than GW bases, but not so much that it's a real problem. Still, if I were to do it again, I might try to come up with other options. I looked at some other battery sizes (CR2016 or CR2025 and some of the smaller diameter ones) but I couldn't find one that had decent life and, more importantly, for which I could find good battery clips.

@Ledabot: With the metal termies, I did drill out a cavity in the chest. Used my dremel with a diamond burr. Worked the trick. The main problem was drilling out a leg so I could run the wires. I think I "lost" two termie bodies when the drill bit broke off and go jammed in the leg, but that was about it. The work wasn't hard, but it was tedious.

JohnS

Good luck on the project. Just FYI, I posted a complete video series on almost this wxact same project a while back. Should offer some solutions to some of your issues. It is In The tutorial section of the forums. As for the haters... Heck with them. I've lit up almost my entire army from fine cast to metal to vehicles. I've yet to have some one see it in person and not be at least a little impressed.

Thanks for the encouragement ...... FaceofChaos I found my reed switches turns out they are latching ones which means magnet turns them on & they stay until you turn them off ..... with the Magnet ..... Here's the new pictures ............. The first is the battery holder ....... then height of the base ..... then the big problem is the little brass tube going to the sensor of suit that I broke off .... letting the glue dry now ...... this is fun modifing these little guys ..... just me first is the hardest to do .....

I agree with some of the comments about over doing it or not looking right but a model done up right does look great.
I’ve been doing LED’s a couple years and to me it’s just another way of adding details to you models. I have only thought about fiber optic because there are SMT LED’s out there that are pretty darn small.
I think if your going to use LED’s for headlights/spotlights you need to find the correct size or it does look a little out of place.
I’ve seen a couple tanks that had everything LED up (guns, headlamps, interior) to me that was over kill and I don’t like the, for example a whole Rhino interior chock full of batteries to power the thing up.
Big fan of hiding everything, hide the switches, hide the battery that way if you play a “purest” that doesn’t care about your hard work… he’ll never know….
To date I have 5 Rhino’s, 2 Land Raiders, 6 Devil Fish, 2 Dreads and a whole bunch of other things including some pretty big terrain pieces that are all LED…. I had fun building them, they are mine and I don’t care if anyone likes them or not but so far I’ve never had a bad response.
