Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Riveters... contest #6

WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
(thanks to Ruglud for the idea)

Competition Guidelines:

For this competition you'll be asked to make a shrine, or object of veneration of some sort. This may include monuments and statues, churches/temples, shrines located within some greater structure (another building, or maybe on the back of a tank) It doesn't have to be religious or dedicated to a god, but must be a meaningful monument in some way.

Base: this might be part of a terrain set, and large or spread out, for instance a cathedral, or monument. Or, it might be very intricate and fitting on a standard game base such as 25, 40 or 60 mm.

Guidelines for judging: Creativity, Humor and Realism are all equally appreciated, in any combination. Please post WIP's so we know what materials you are working with: for example if you purchase a kit or scratchbuild your own. The final product will be judged as a whole, based on what you do with the materials you are using... if you use ready made materials there needs to be some other form of creativity such as modifications to it or combination in an artful way with other products. Diversity and variation of color, shape and texture are a huge part of this. Other elements such as worshippers, being based on a tank, or building interior/exterior all may influence the judging slightly but the object of veneration is the most important. It doesn't matter whether it's ruined or in use. Weathering, and plantlife growing in and around the shrine could count as part of the entry though.

Prizes: League membership, and the winner receives a miniature lovingly converted and painted by me, limited to as large as a 40mm base. There will also be a prize for participation in general, and those entries that might be full of heart but not technically the best, which will be a servo skull crafted and painted by me. BTW Cataphractii was very happy with his

Deadline: June 30th. A bit longer than the other contests, but I think it's just more relaxed for everybody and their busy lifestyle... no excuse not to join!

So how to use this contest to increase skills and share techniques? I hope to see some cool weathering techniques, whether of stone, bronze or other creative materials. If you want some flames burning in your shrine... I recommend grabbing some LED tea light candles, chopping it up and placing it inside to create a flickering flame effect. Shrines to chaos gods, Shrines to Gork and Mork, Imperial tank-churches, statues of heroic space marines, Or any other weird object of veneration you might come up with for any game or display. This would be a great opportunity to show off shrubbery skills... maybe some flowers placed the feet of a statue or vines growing up around to show age.

BTW guys... please edit your 'League terrain contest' banners to link here! that way we get the word out.

Awesome, was hoping to get at least one chaos entry!

Will this shrine include skulls, possibly?

I just copy/paste the link to this thread and replace it where the old link was, in your edit sig where the HTML code is? Works for me...

Or you could do this...

Mine would be much smaller, but I already have the bits for my version of it... I've just been putting off doing it for ages as I don't think I can do it justice. On the other hand... learn by doing!

The plinths would be made from old-shape Sure roll-on de-odourant bottles, so only about 5cm high instead of the scale in that image.

Assuming you used a normal model, and colored it to look like wraithbone, that could be very cool.

My recommendation would be to use that pic as inspiration, and focus on a single plinth, putting more work into the detail on it and surroundings... whether it's ruined or not... not to mention, there are a lot of great bits available for elven ruins.

On the other hand, if you pulled of a monumental scale statue of some sort... that would be most impressive as it would require a lot of ingenuity to blow up an eldar to that scale! I guess same goes for any other figure. Space Marines have it easy because of the GW kit...

What I am thinking of is the chamber where an Avatar would sit, with the Avatar up on a throne, typical Eldar archways around and one of each of the Phoenix Lords on a plinth.

I got the bug tonight already... It is not the scale that I think some people were hoping for, but if I can pull it off, it will be awesome...

I should point out that this is way too ambitious for me, and I am not going to be able to pull it off as well as I would like, nor well enough to win this comp. Like I said though, learn by doing.

Head now removed from body for straightening. Middle finger sliced on craft knife.

Belly mostly removed from chest. Index finger sliced open on razor saw.

Only small cuts, but I think I have given enough blood to Khaine tonight, and I am clearly to tired to continue...

This is right up my street, im in. Not sure exactly what mine will be yet, probally something space marine related or at the least imperial based.
The new deadlines great gives me plenty of time, also looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with.

Quick question, would it be ok to use one of my current work in progress piece's, finish it and use it on my entry?

Well, I have a few ideas...

My first thought is a gothic war memorial that would take pride of place in a ceremonial plaza on a far flung loyalist world of the Imperium.

This is the inspiration - it' the Nelson Monument in Liverpool (UK) and has some amazing sculptures on it - Google it as there are so many details that one photo cannot convey.

The monument is a depiction of a goddess handing a naked Nelson the crowns of victory while a sinister, skeletal figure of Death clutches at his breast. Four despondent French prisoners-in-chains sit at the base.

Possibly a little on the ambitious side, but given the deadline on the competition worth considering I think...

I was thinking of something like this... but based in the ruin's of a cathedral with candles everywhere.

Or if I have the time, something like the second picture... depends how ambitious Im feeling.

Great to have you on board!

That is fine, and I'm sure others have done the same... just take pics of what you started with.

@ Ruglud: Those statues are very 40k to begin with... definitely awesome inspiration... I'm guessing you've seen it in person?

I wonder if because of the iconography of death in the Imperium... a skeleton wouldn't be depicted like that. It's usually the opposite.... death is the Imperium itself, as in images of the corpse-emperor, space marines as angels of death, skulls as the main symbol of the Imperium. So a victory over death is anti-imperial! Probably also no need to have nudity, that is a neo-classical style and the imperium is more based on Medieval gothic (or depending, also high renaissance) sculpture, which would usually be heavily clothed/armored. But it all depends on the planet!

I love the chains coming from the lion's mouth... just replace lions with skulls... and you're good to go!

@Fifty: I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to try something similar.

I'd like to work in the shrine I built previously, but make statuary and stele to go with it. I'll submit them separately, of course. Since the arch is not terribly stable I can't use it for games, but I'm going to work it into the bases of the statuary so it won't fall over (and inevitably crush models and terrain).

Here's a quick sketch:

and here's the shrine from before:

@Mars: also ambitious... and no problem as long as you build something new and integrate it into the older structure. I definitely think the shrine would look nice if it had more grounding and statuary around it, making it look more like a gate.

No problem at all from my point of view, Mars. As I said, I don't think I can do my project justice anyway. I may not even finish! The more the merrier making Eldar terrain.

I have, however, made some more progress...

Notice the mouth is no longer screaming! The head is ready to be pinned on straight. I'll need to green stuff a bit of collar back on one side.

Legs are pinned. I won't attach the knee pads or put on green stuff until the whole pose is fixed. I'll pin the feet next.. Once that is done will be pinning the torso to the hips.

As you can see, he will be posed sat down with the sword across his lap and both hands resting. I am confident I can get the pose okay... However...

The hardest bit for me will be doing the green stuff belly, as I'll need to try and get the six-pack done, and I am awful at green-stuffing. In fact, I wonder if there are any Londoners who could help me with that part? I may even put an appeal out on the main painting and modelling section...
