I had the idea awhile back:
Imagine, your a PDF trooper, on patrol, when suddenly an ork rok crashes near by, and before you can even move, orks come pooring out, killing the rest of your platoon. By some miracle, you are able to evade the orkish invaders, and make it to what was the local bastion of Imperial forces, the PDFAB, the planetary Naval Air Wings command post. Only now the gates have been broken it down, the walls are blown through, and the charred remains of Voss Lightning II's and Marauder bombers litter the runway, destroyed before the pilots could take off.
This is what i imagined when i came up with this idea, and now, i want to know what YOU all think about the idea. Add to that what do you think i should use for the construction of this base, what could it use, or other things...
I admit i won't be able to start doing it just yet.

Having spent 5 or so years living on destroyed airbases in Iraq what I would suggest is doing a Google Map search for some of the air bases there (Al Asad and Al Taqaddum coming to mind). Those should give you some places to start your design from. I would also suggest making it modular - rather than one big board so you can move things about from time to time.
Construction would be like any other terrain project - masonite for the base, covered with pink foam insulation to make the ground and so forth.

yeah i agree that it should be done modular, but my main issue is making low price crashed/ destroyed valkyries, marauders, and voss lightning II's. That and what all kinds of buildings (beyond hangars, and a control tower). I want to find a way to make it as cheaply (without killing quality) as possible.

All of the crashed aircraft could get really expensive. However, look for images of hardened aircraft shelters. I think those could make for some intereting LOS blocking terrain.

I like the Hardened aircraft shelter idea, and like i was trying to say, the crashed aircraft would indeed be rather pricey... thats why i am searching for a low price solution for it Automatically Appended Next Post: Sooooo, anyone got some damaged beyond repair IN planes?

Some of them look like you could make them with large coffee cans, cut in half and supported on low foam core walls. In fact, you can make it modular, such that the curved part sits on top of the wall, so that you can remove it and allow models to go inside.

this is true, but my main concern remains getting my hands on damaged beyond repair IN aircraft... That or i could modifiy the set up from airbase to a tank depot or a basic base used by IG forces on the planet Automatically Appended Next Post: just had a thought of using old fashioned ww2 airplanes, go with the theory that the pdf on this planet has some REALLY old tech that never got updated

you can generally find GW's crashed Aquila terrain on ebay for rather cheap. I picked one up for $20 a while back.

Yeah, but thats a none combat vehicle, this base was supposed to be a military base, not a land to orbit port.

Aquilas are used to transport high ranking officials, typically military. I'd say it'd be there. Only thing I dont like about that terrain model is that it looks really "Dropped" if you get what I mean. No signs of drag or anything...its just sort of there.

I agree, it looks like it literally fell out of the sky, straight down, what i was wanting to do was have a few blown up marauders, maybe a couple broken, stuff like that

take a look at stuff on ebay... usually you can find stuff on the cheap there, especially if condition doesn't matter (and in this case it doesn't since it's supposed to be crashed). Additionally, you only need one or two for fully destroyed aircraft as fueled and armed aircraft tend to explode spectacularly and burn down to very little.
Scatter your parts among multiple "airframes" and use bits and pieces from used ground vehicles and such to increase the amount of wreckage at each of those sites as well. Enough aircraft stuff to identify it as formerly aircraft, but enough chaff to make it look like more than just one fuselage.

By got! Why didn't i think of that?! Good show eXetus, now all i need to do is figure out the material for the wall sections, destroyed turret emplacements, maybe make some kinda land to orbit defence system (missile silo anyone?) and then i should be good... It is gonna be awhile to acquire certain funds and then parts.
Idea, should i paint several of the 'crafts' different schemes? cuz i was plannin' on having this base on a rather jungle-y planet

EBay is your best bet for the low budget parts for the wrecks - as for the hangers and such, foam core, insulation board and so forth is also your friend.
