Okay, reading through previous posts about Characters being unable to use a Drop Pod because they need a Command Squad; I thought "yikes! there goes my Emperor's Champion in a Drop Pod with a Sword Brethren Squad idea".
I looked at the Drop Pod option for Black Templars and considered how the Champion Drops down along with the rest of the army. Naturally it would be weird just to have him in his own Drop Pod (I know Black Templars must be rich with all those thousands of power suits, Crusader Tanks and all but I think it's a bit extravagant) and the rules did not point in that direction so I logically presumed he takes up a space in someone elses pod (much to their blessed fanatical delight being the psychopaths Black Templars are). This idea gave me some peace of mind that it was possible as even Graham McNeill fielded not only the Champion but a Marshall and a Chaplain in a Sword Brethren's Transport Option Land Raider Crusader (UK White Dwarf Issue 311 pg 36).
So what's exactly the hold up in fitting Characters into Drop Pods? Just seems odd that somehow the Emperor's Champion walks onto the battlefield in the face of the entire enemy army for a turn or so tapping his feet and looking at his watch beside a somewhat embarrassed Techmarine who yells out to his opponent's "Don't worry the rest of us will show up, we just get air sick that's all, so we took a cab!" My first post, so go easy folks

Under the couch

The problem is in the Reserves rules on page 84 of the rulebook, and in the rules for joining Characters to units, on page 50.

What it all boils down to is that there is no way to join an IC to a unit that is not yet on the board, and even if you could do so, the Reserves rules force you to roll for them seperately anyway. There is simply no way for a Champ to be in a Pod.

During the Deployment Phase, ICs can be deployed into transports that are already on the table, but if the battle report you referenced was using the current BT codex, it was an illegal move anyway, since the Champion can't join a Command Squad.

Cheers insaniak. Looks like the Emperor's Champion is afraid of something after all... heights. :/

Yes while still a "grey" area, RAW currently lean towards that the EC cannot join crusaders in a DP. It is of my OPINION, that when the FAQ's get updated, this will change.

I do not have my codex in front of me so please excuse my question, but legates possibly brings up a interesting question, is there something in the BT Codex that states the EC cannot have his own personal Drop pod for his lonesome?

burp.

The codex lists which units can take pods (I don't recall which), but the Emperor's champ isn't one of them.

Hopefully they'll correct this someday.
