Or how a newbie gets too exited about learning new stuff.

Last week I finally, after 1½ years, got last of my Grey Knights painted. After learning so much from so many mistakes, i'm feeling confident enough about myself that I decided to start doing something i've always wanted: diorama! As my army really needs some more transport capacity, and airplanes being so near to my heart, I decided to go for it and do a mini-dio on stormravens base. And being the nice guy I am, I decided to do this blog around this undertaking for you fellow dakkas to watch, comment and give advice. And for me to ask for help when I start to reach too far beyond my skills.

From the start I have couple of things im going to try in this project: smoke and OSL. I've never done either before, but if past experiences in painting and modelling have told me anything, it's that I learn best by just going for it and not thinking too much about "how" Also new to me is green stuff, and more precisely the liquid form. Ive never been too eager to do any sculpting, and this time is not different, I just want to try the stuff out for some hole-plugging that is going to come around.

What has happened this far: First bumbs came before I even had came home from my shopping spree for the project. Neither my FLGS nor local GW had cadian officers-blister I need for this! I did order it at GW, but its gonna take at least a week to arrive, maybe longer with bad luck. Oh well, I do have inquisitorial front hatch and etch-parts coming from FW so it's not like this is only thing delaying me. I did manage to buy the flyer itself, and basilica admistratum-box for building some terrain around the base. Some 1mm wire from local crafts store for pinning or modelling support struts in concrete and im ready to start.

Building a piece of corner of a building was simple enough. Some bits of sprue, little drilling, liquid green stuff and pieces of wire, and it looks blown out enough. Nothing too complicated. Stormraven, on the other hand... There is nothing too complicated in building it, either, but the instructions for it leave something to be desired. Especially when they mix up the part numbers. Good thing I was awake and testing everything before using glue when building canopies for the turret and the cockpit. Parts seem to fit pretty well, parts aren't leaving craks between them or anything, but just to test it I give little bit of LGS to some parts. I get every piece that has some inside-details done and im able to put the basic hull together with some rubber bands for testing the positions of everything on the base.

Try as I might, its not gonna fit! Either the base gets too cramped, something comes out from it, the raven touches the building from some point or it just doesn't look good. After good time of fiddling around, I decide to do this one step bigger than first planned: its not gonna be mini-diorama on a base, its going to be a small diorama with stormravens base slotted in it! Back to the shops for something to base it on.

I manage to find some cheap table-covers made from cork. Back at home, after some rough measurements the new plan starts to form. The biggest challenge at this point seems to be getting enough stuff to happen on the model, without blowing it over with too much stuff. I think I need to start making some bricks and pieces of concrete wall out of sprues and wire... Too bad I can't get any final positioning done before those ordered minis and parts get here At least I have time and reason to paint everything behind the doors and glasses in the stormraven now.

To be continued ASAP. Sorry about the quality of pics, i'm working on getting better camera to use here

This is not gonna work, need to do it bigger!

This might work, need to plan it!

Well, for couple of days i've been working on the insides of the stormraven. Lots of work still to be done, cleaning especialy, but im pretty happy about how all the screens came out. Need to get some gloss varnish to put on them to make them even more good

Also, better camera \o/

Looking good so far, I like the detail on the various screens and displays.

"Do you think it is an easy task to inflate a dog?" - Cervantes

"Do you have a map of the cat?" - Richard Feynman

How to paint Skeletons the way I do if that's something you'd fancy trying.

Thank you, im pretty proud of those Too bad most of those will become pretty invisible when I put everything together, but its nice to know that there are something cool hidden inside for people to find if they look close enough

Not much progress atm, still waiting for those forgeworld-parts to come. At least they are shipped now according to them. Been putting all the sub-assemblies like wings and weapons together. Also, first drilled barrels ever. I think it went pretty well, got 11 out of 12 pretty well centered. Now I need to gut my flames of war-shermans for magnets and find a way to magnetize those hurricane bolters and doors for the sides. There isn't that much room for the magnets in the door frames, so I might need to make some kind of a stick out of some sprue to put between them. If anyone reading this has magnetized stormraven before, tips would be appreciated

First try at drilling barrels. Not perfect, but acceptable.

Little bit of progress again. This time I got the turret with plasma cannons pretty much ready to receive some OSL-love tomorrow. Dont know whats going to happen with that, as it is again something im trying first time ever on this model

Good job so far! Although your interior pics are reminding me why I painted my cockpit canopy black.

So, here we go. After couple of days of keeping out from my paint station out of fear of what would come, I finally got around trying my hand in that damn OSL-thing. When starting I had absolutely no idea what im doing, despite reading and watchin tons of tutorials about the technique. I went with the easiest way I found, layering the light color on the surfaces, making sure I follow the imaginary lines so the light leaves sharp shadows when coming into a corner, etc. Now after ive done it, I would do couple of things differently, most importantly, I would think little more about how the light works on the shiny metallic surface of the turret sides. But, all in all, im pretty happy how it ended up, and the important thing here was that I learned a lot!

Edit: Actually, now that im looking again at that picture in smaller frame, im quite impressed myself! That coil thing looks awesome when you shrink the picture that much!

I promise you, it looks much better live and from right angle!

Magnets! How do they work? The side doors in stormraven lack extra plastic, so I had to go with piece of sprue rigged between them (didnt want to start causing massive structural damage to the thing trying to mount magnets in the side panels ) My FoW-shermans had to make the ultimate sacriface to facilitate my needs for small magnets for least amount of money possible. We salute you! Besides, its not like I was using them for anything else than collecting dust in the corner of the shelf...

Its not pretty, but it works

The plane has been named! I watched The Tudors couple of days ago, and liked the pope-given title King Henry had, meaning "Defender of the Faith". So I decided to copy it to my stormraven! Purple around the white area needs another coat of paint, but the text came out pretty nicely. Might still need to invest for a small calligraphy-pen tho...

Long time no update... I had a mild case of painters block, even the tought of picking brush up felt bad. Nothing a couple of days of doing anything else wouldn't cure, however! Now im back with vengance, at least for time being

First wing is ready now, only the clear plastic piece for the tip to be glued to place. I went and did some schorching and chipping, again, new things to me. I think I might have gone little too nuts on the engine intake but hey, you cant know until you have tried! I also tried to make some re-entry heat schorching on the leading edge and some las-blast marks, plus the carbon buildup on the outlets of the missile launcher. Also something coming out from the grilles next to motor, couldnt figure out what the heck those grilles are trying to do, but looking at the pics around the net most of the people had made some kind of exhaust buildup around there. Only the other wing and the hull to do, and some finishing touches to the tail... This is going to be a long day...

Couple of pics of progress this far. Havent glued the wings on yet, and actually im thinking about magnetizing those too, would make transportation easier if I ever wanted to take this thing somewhere. Also, damn its hard to take pics of something this shiny, my poor old camera just cant handle the flash

Looking good so far, is it Army Painter Platemail for the silver by any chance? The effort you're putting into the project is showing through, well done!

Thank you for your kind words, I aim to please!

And yeah, I have plate mail for my basecoat. Before I left it at that, but with this guy I went the extra mile and drybrushed it with runefang steel. After that I do edge highlights with vallejo model silver. Gives nice textured effect without need to use washes, looks even better live
