Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Affton, MO. USA

Glad to see you back, I'm in the same boat with no time whatsoever. Hope we both get some quality painting/modeling time soon.

I saw a box of Betrayal at Calth today for $99.00. If I wasn't strapped for cash and the next zombicide happening in may I'd be all over it.

Haha thanks Josh . I've fallen in love with the downtrodden little gits myself, they got so much more love than the other three non grunts I felt s little bad for those.

Holy crap it's a Theo! You were scarce even back before I trailed off, good to see you kicking Round . I'm staying away from Kickstarter as much as I can. Got bones coming in sooner or later and I dunno how I feel about 4 but I'm sure they'll have one.

I've done ok this year so far, probably went overboard buying Pokemon cards for the kiddo but still no more than a free shipping sized MM order or so. Been avoiding their DotD entirely lol.

Calth will only ever come if I can get the same thing done first from minis I own and that leaves me at least 20 marines, 2 characters, 3 more terminators or so... So unlikely lol...But I am digging out my marines *again*. Those HH books are fiendishly inspiring.

Oh I am considering a 4x4-6' neoprene mat for a Wasteland table instead of the modular foot square floor tiles. But mostly I've finally reached the "more models than I can use and I'm actually aware of it" stage.

Barzam, the yellow strips are Tamiya masking tape. I lay out a piece on my desk and cut narrow strips of it for straps, wraps, and tape stuff.

So yeah totally got it in me to drag out all of my space marines to see what I still have. There's a fair bit left actually. To the point that even if I ended up painting enough to allow myself to get a Calth box... I'd just as well make those the start of a chaos/traitors force because I just don't need more marines. Maybe a few bits here or there to finish stuff out, but not ~40 more models.

So here's what I've got painted:

So here you see a full tactical squad complete with rhino plus little bits of character like junior apothecary and tech marine along with a standard. All magnets because I dunno I just magnetize space marine arms. Six scouts, really a squad of five with one just kinda hanging out. Guess I got ambitious at some point Basically bolter+heavy bolter scouts. Relatively standard issue dreadnought with multimelta and flamer in the DCCW. Randomly decided to paint the fancier dreadnought in an alternate scheme but his icons all match the army, remember venerable Bitsboxius? I've also got 3 stray terminators --one is pretty sad and likely needs a new army fashioned and painted-- and a veteran/sternguard. Though I'm reconsidering my black robes over dark grey armor scheme. White may actually be the ticket but it would be a bear to redo the ten I've already primed black unless I just spray them white and hope they don't lose too much definition.

Anyway, here's the gang in a bit more organized of a deployment, so its more obvious what I'm working with:

Ahh, much more decipherable!

So yeah anyway the first hurdle (actually kind of a big one) is that they *really* should go onto clear acrylic bases if I'm gonna move forward with them. Space marines are kind of designed to go on the familiar shape of GW bases, they kind of round out the models and keep them a touch taller. Their wide stances and natural shortness (for dudes who are supposed to be 7-8 feet tall) will take some adjustment getting used to seeing them on minimal clear acrylic rounds. I could technically wait till I got a next unit painted to actually do any new basing, and may well take that route. So the thing I really must determine (if I'm actually gonna paint some space marines, that is) is what next?

That's where you guys come in

I give you the (ominous noun) knights/angels in all their glory! Y'know, oblivion angels or knights, shadow knights, void angels, dark knights (bwahaha)... or switch it around angels ascendant, knight angels (too much? ), knights of oblivon, angels of shadow..etc. Sadly, I'll bet you half of those are already taken by successor chapters

If you can't see from the picture there are 3 speeders, 1 land speeder storm, 5 rhino chassis (one is set up to be a vindicator due to lack of bits), 14 bikes (I think I have enough DA wing handle guard things to cover the normal bikes), 10 marines in and out of robes for a tactical squad, 10 DA sprue robed marines primed and started converting for combi bolters, 10 DA sprue robed marines just on bases (in a bag), likely 10 more non-robed marines for a third tactical squad but they're quite scattered and dismantled throughout the bits boxen, 5 LSS scouts who can magnet mount on their craft, probably 5 misc scouts of the old metal variety, 2-3 DV librarians, AoBR converted captain, converted chapter master with twin super powefists, 5 terminator legs honor guard, ~15 assorted terminators (the shooty kind, the storm shield kind lost their legs...guess I could buy some on eBay...). Probably some other stuff that's escaping me. Oh yeah, got 4x heavy bolters, so a squad of HB devastators is possible.

I think I've got some scouts that aren't in the photo, and the land speeder storm crew is in a bits box (shown, but not noticeable). If I want to work towards the goal of ordering calth (whether I do or not) I should focus on 20 more infantry (slaving myself to just troops is too boring), two characters, or 2-3 more terminators to finish out that squad in progress. Of course, I'll be happy to get any of my backlog painted and may be flexible on the Calth thing with just a number of models finished to unlock it.

What out of that pile would you guys like to see? I've got some stuff that's pretty close to ready like the second tactical squad, terminators to finish the first squad of those, a Librarian who's nearly there, and maybe one of the tanks. Oh and the drop pods, two of those are close but it's tedious edge highlighting for days. Can't forget Fistivius Fistigar and his honor guard either. My awesome highly artiulated terminators gave up their legs so that squad could exist so they have to get done eventually.

Thoughts? I'm gonna have to get the airbrush up and running, painting the color of grey I use over black is just too painful without it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, to make the chaos/traitor force sound enticing, they'd be the darker half of my Shadow Knights (if the name sticks), what remains of the marines after they give into their borderline technophillic tendencies. Lots of tubes, wires, bits from the sedition wars monsters and maybe some zombie parts. Leave a lot of the legion guys mostly clean but compromise a few for possessed/whatever squads and maybe sacrifice a few dark angel terminators for obliterators/melee equivalent and so on. Maybe tech up some zombies to go with the necromorphs (isn't that what the sedition wars guys are called?). I dunno, stuff like that. Kinda like if the Iron Warriors and Death Guard had a baby legion or something.

I thought the space sharkodons were light grey? I'm actually considering alternative schemes and keeping the original core of shadow knights an ally or something.

Hmm what about blue but in a not ultramarines kind of way?

Like this guy?

The techniques involved are agreeable and I kinda like the look (ignore the camo tabbard).

So if I replicated that shade of blue on space marines... white or black for the off color?

OR

Subject to tweaks, of course. But thoughts? Black or white as the primary off color? And what about the large scatter of dark angels icons and stuff, the wings on those should be white and the robes probably. But uhh hmm black or white, and what about robes and wings... black off color and then white wings and robes? Something else? Primed a figure to do a test on soonish.

WB Grim! I Really like that torquoise/teal kind of colour. Very reminiscent of the Sons of Horus, though they tend to be just over the border into green from your Infinity guy there who is just blue-side.

As for the accent colour - why not both? You can use it to distinguish between regulars and veterans/terminators or something. It's a very SM thing to do, and has tons of precedent.

Hmm interesting. I guess that makes sense, vary it by squad and I can pick them out easier.

The sons of Horus huh. Yeah I'd probably have to do a 50/50 green blue glaze instead of straight blue.

Good stuff.

Good to see you posting again. I was just wondering what Grim was up to.

You could just bequeath all the marines to me and they wouldn't then be a problem for you. Promise to give them a good home ;-)

On a serious note I like the white accents (shoulder pads etc.) compared to the black ones.

That mottled blue color really makes me think of water, and reminded me of a aquatic marine chapter Sons of Poseidon. Only ever saw the test color scheme for them but they were underwater specialists, and had a trident for a chapter symbol. Ultramarine heritage I believe, but would be different and allow for conversions. Just a crazy thought.

If you went for the dark angel symbols though let me know, I've collected over a thousand of those pads.......seriously . I was going to do my own full chapter . And for color just do the typical color change of the emblem means different company.

Hmm good input guys.

Archer- is that how you get all of your armies for your project? Provide and easy way out to indecisive marks like me?

Theo- sounds like s cool chapter but I'm not sure it's for me. Not a huge fan of aquatic stuff and it all just seems a bit fishy if I'm honest...

I may have to hit you up for some pads though I do remember having a load of them. Though one squad I recall being slated for Templar pads and that may be less desirable nowadays.

Gonna sit down to try this scheme now hrmm.

The kids got me up early this morning and though I got them sleeping again it was too late to try myself. Fortunately, I managed to be productive so I'm attaching a few photos of my test scheme. I think I like it. Black for the elbow pads, knees (if present) and some shoulder pads, white for the eagles, some shoulder pads, and probably any robes. They're blue, but I don't think they look like fists OR Ultras.

What think you? I'm somewhat confident I can replicate it on marines though vehicles make me a little apprehensive of a solid copy.

P.S. The weathering needs tweaking, I'll figure that out when/if I have a batch of finished marines to work with. I think the sky blue and silver both work for scratches and base-metal gouges, but they need something between them so the silver shows better, maybe black or something.

I like that he has both colors. That will probably be how I do the first squad and they can be from X company. The bikers I have queued up may have double black for Y company, etc. Some squad may end up with white for both.

What do you guys think, white robes or more of a tan like dark angels use?

I think tan. Darker than the Dark Angels though. Leave the white stand out as without competing with the robes.

They look great

You should name them the Sons of Grimdork if there can be the sons of Orar, then why not the great hero Grimdork who built fortifications to hold back the orc tide.

I'm having trouble with names for them, I want to say use words like celestial or wayfarer as the blue reminds me of sky and or waves on the ocean.

Shas, I dunno how many. I'm just taking it a squad, or even a model at a time. Upper limits I'm not even sitting at a company though I guess counting terminators and scouts and all the vehicle crews it may be closer than I think. With the new skirmish game and 40k 8th Ed around the corner I could be falling back down the rabbit hole pretty hard, or I may finish this squad and move on to other projects.

Theo, names always give me fits. I'm stuck on the blue color and the dark angels angle mostly. Sadly Angel is involved in a loooot of chapter name haha. Blue Angels is out lol, Azure angels is meh, Azure Order almost works. Angel Blades was suggested and i don't hate it. Something is gonna click...

Say, I've got one vote for a drop pod already but what do you guys think? Pod or rhino? Razorback bits would be included just because.

Angel blades is too close to the Angel's Blade (blood angel book) for my taste.

SO there you have it. Pretty good turnover for me as of lately. Could be a bit neater, a bit more precise but meh. I like them well enough. Oh the eyes need some gloss hmm. I'll worry about weathering some time, or they may stay clean.
