I'm curious as to whether anyone has some recommended reading for Weird Westerns.
One of my favorites is the "Merkabah Rider" series (E.M. Erdelac). It is a story about a Jewish mystic who wanders the Old West fighting demons and other supernatural creatures. The interesting part is that many of the characters are drawn from Hebrew lore. As the story progresses, the Hebrew mythology intersects with the Cthulhu Mythos. I've never succeeded in finding a "Jewish Rabbi" miniature that could stand in for the Rider.
The other one I wanted to recommend was "Dead Man's Hand" by Nancy Collins. It focuses on western monsters, or what I call the "Universal Studios" set (vampire, Frankenstein, werewolf, etc). Of the short stories, her novella, 'Walking Wolf' is the best. The premise revolves around a Werewolf living among Indians, and he meets a few historical figures from the Plains Indian Wars. The other stories weren't as good, but still worth reading.
I also like the entire "Jonah Hex" comic series that ran from 2005-2011 (Gray and Palmiotti). Many of the stories are "conventional" spaghetti westerns, but there are a large number of issues that are "Weird" and involve supernatural characters. I thought every issue was just excellent. After 2011, DC did its reboot and set Jonah Hex in "All Star Western" series, which I believe is completely inferior to the 05-11 series.
Does anyone else have any recommendations?

I don't get time to do much reading for fun lately.. most of what I've been thinking up for the game has come from TV shows or movies, but I've also been taking some ideas from this site .. http://www.native-languages.org/monsters.htm ... lots of stuff there

Right now I'm re-reading the "Preacher" comics. I love the "Saint of Killers" character... the Angel of Death manifest in the form of a world's most cold-hearted cowboy. It's really awesome. He has a lot in common with Stone from the "Deadlands" series.
My only complaint is that his gun swaps between an 1851 Navy and a Starr DA revolver depending on what the artist was feeling like that day.

The preacher is a great weird west graphic novel, but it is pretty depraved and mature.
My current favorite graphic novel is The Sixth Gun by ONI Press, it's set right after the civil war and takes all the classic western architypes and spices them up with a bit of the mysterious. Awesome dialogue, cool characters, badass villians, striking vibrant color pallet: This is my favorite series regardless of genre, it just happens to be a weird west.

Hey there -- I ran across this thread on a Google search for "weird westerns", and I just wanted to let you know I've got a weird western novel on Amazon Kindle called "The Whirlwind in the Thorn Tree". All-original epic inspired by Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
11 five-star reviews, and I'm hard at work on the sequel.
If you don't have the money, let me know and I'll email you a copy. If you don't have a Kindle, it'll be available on Smashwords and Screwpulp in a few days, or I can just email you an ePub.

Some of my favorite Weird West comics are:
Desperadoes published by IDW
American Vampire published by Vertigo
Caliber: First Canon of Justice published by Radical Books
The Desperado is kind of like the Hex series in that most if it is conventional adventure but some of it is weird west as well. American Vampire starts in the old west but then continues to much more modern times but the western part is still very good. Caliber is a retelling of Arthur and the sword in the stone in the west but it is a great retelling.
Hey does anyone know anything about the comic Loveless published by Vertigo? I flipped thought he first isue once but never got back to it. It was rated Mature I think. I thought it might have some wierd west in it but an not sure.

Cherie priest and her clockwork century series is good. Steampunk, zombies, civil war lasting for 20 years, etc. Seattle walled off and has become a city of the dead, air pirates, etc. might be a good period piece / alternate history / weird western if you like the idea presented.

I have not read 'The Sixth Gun.' Right now I've started 'East of West,' but it is so weird I don't know if I will finish it.
