Both evidence that seemingly half of all Kickstarters I see has enough faith or commitment in their own ideas to actually pay for something themselves and then take it to market.
The idea of giving one of these fethers money to buy themselves a pro camera and talk is bizarre to me.
Still fools and their money are easily parted.
How do you promote your Hobby? - Legoburner "I run some crappy wargaming website "
why would gamers want to watch a documentry about gamers ? i watch programs about stuff i dont know about or people who interest me .i dont want to watch a hr long vid of some neckbeards swilling mountain dew and playing games in the kitchen then having a jolly laugh about how "missunderstod" they are and how there not really geeks .......were all geeks we dont need to watch a film to know that we are all the same .

Documentaries end up with a hell of a lot of raw footage. It takes a really long time to edit that, and that's all stuff that has to be done by hand. Documentaries may be cheaper than a number of other kinds of films, but there's still a lot of money involved for time and labor, let alone cameras and lights.
The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude.

Not entirely true. I have plenty of friends and family members that know what I do. But don't really understand it that well.. But each to there own.
On a side note, damn you people are cut throat. I myself have not put any money into it either, and the comment about GW prices what the?

A well made documentary would probably go down well with the community. However these chaps really shouldn't be in front of the camera if they want a success. They may be good editors/cinematographers etc but they lack charisma and ability to convey enthusiasm in front of the lens. If you want money to make a movie make sure your video presentation is top notch or your going to be out of luck, theirs isn't.

On an unrelated question- Why didn't these documentarians go through and use a grant?
At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.
I watched the film, it was well made. It is a really good introduction to the hobby but a real documentary needs to have some interesting questions driving the narrative and I am left wondering what they will do with a longer amount of time and what the interseting questions will be.

Agreed. To be honest there biggest problem was they were straight up asking for people to pretty much buy them all the gear. 30k worth... they should of did like a 5k goal and made do with that. Since they said they were going to be making one either way.
Asking for 30k from people and having nothing outstanding to back you up can be quiet fishy to most, which I understand. By no means am I saying to back these fello's if you do that's up to you reason I opened this thread was to see if everyone already knows about this
and I'm a few weeks late on the news and stuff. Guess I'm not.

The other thing is that if you're just wanting to make a doco, you could do it by renting the gear as needed and your final costs will be much, much cheaper. $30k to buy all the gear might get the doco made, and at the end they have $30k of "free" production gear, so it's much more akin to "set up my studio" in a lot of ways.

We are hoping to raise $30,000 in order to produce the film. Shooting is expected to take place over 9 months to a year. As such, we need to have access to gear at a moments notice. All of the money raised will go to purchasing better camera gear and covering travel costs.
A moment's notice? They're not shooting 24-hour rolling, breaking news stories. Games are planned in advance, and tournaments much moreso. It's more about "buy us a full set of gear" and "pay for our trip to GenCon/Adepticon." et cetera.
There was another, very similar one (pay for my gear, my crew, my trip to gencon, etc) where the guy posted on here about 6-8(?) months ago and got a bit upset when it got a similar reaction.
Just putting this out there- from my days working on various crap films to make some cash- it costs an absolutely absurd amount to do anything in film and not make it look utterly unprofessional, unless you want to go into the realm of hyperstylized.
Not my cup of tea, but $30k is 100% reasonable for a documentary

You obviously have no idea what a producer is do you? Do you think any director or writer fronts the millions of dollars to make a movie (or in the case of a doc... 10's of thousands)? They present it to people to fund it. That's exactly what Kickstarter does, but the public are the producers. Not saying this doc should be made, I'm just saying it's naive to think that film makers should foot the bill to make their movie. There are a lot of awesome docs getting made through crowd funding.
To be honest, I'd love to see a full spread sheet of what everything is going to cost ect. I know for a fact, they do this for some video game kick starters.
In MY opinion. The best way to resolve this is for the makers of something like this, to lay it all out on the table for everyone to see.

James
