Welcome to The Brushlicker's Blog.

I hope to share my hobby activity on a regular basis and, since I'm still learning, get feedback to help me to improve. Equally I am happy to discuss how I model and paint, so questions are most welcome.

At the moment I'm working on... Project Sons of Dorn

The army was started with the mission to rescue old, unloved models, repair them, and give them a fresh (but weathered?) lick of yellow paint, ready to serve on the battlefields of the Imperium once more. It is meant for casual play.

This group shot shows the motley crew in their current state.

Here is a tracker which explains the status of each unit.

Captain 0% painted
Command Squad 0% painted
Razorback x
Master of the Forge 0% assembled
Terminator Squad x
Venerable Dreadnought 100% painted
Dreadnought 100% painted
Tactical Squad 1 100% painted
Rhino 1 50% assembled
Tactical Squad 2 100% painted
Rhino 2 50% assembled
Scout Squad x
Assault Squad 100% painted
Land Speeder 1 Shipping
Land Speeder 2 Shipping
Stormtalon Gunship 1 Shipping
Stormtalon Gunship 2 Shipping
Devastator Squad 100% painted

(x denotes the unit has not been purchased yet.)

The models will be transferred, based and varnished at the end of the project.

Thanks for visiting.

Dreadnought

This Dreadnought started life as a damaged Assault on Black Reach model. He's been enhanced with some spare Venerable Dreadnought bits and kitted out with Twin-Linked Lascannon and Missile Launcher for tank hunting. He was painted yesterday afternoon in 3-4 leisurely hours.

Do you go the light yellowy spray coat and then wash the armour to make it that darker yellow that seems to be the finished product?

Yes. To start they are primed in Army Painter Daemonic Yellow - I'd strongly recommend their colour primers - and the shading is achieved simply by two washes of Gryphonne Sepia. It's a simple way to paint an otherwise notoriously difficult colour.

Any highlights on the armour? And how is the battle damage painted?

No extra highlights, just the washes.

It's sponge weathering with Heavy Charcoal.

They're finished but for the banner, not pictured, which needs a big FW transfer.
