Im looking to add a bit more to my bases without significantly increasing my working time or paying alot for expensive resin bases.

I dont like the look at all of cork. what about the other rocks. is this what i should be using to put a character ontop of a rock and such?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MODEL-SLATE-FOR-BASES-small-to-medium-size-WARGAMES-WARHAMMER-40K-/151053183372

what is the best and also most reasonably priced brand of rocks? any problems glueing to it?

What makes you opposed to cork?

it looks unnatural to me because from what ive seen, every piece is the exact same thickness. Its kind of overplayed, always looks the same and the sponginess of the material doesnt seem too desirable to me either.

maybe it depends on the brand of cork you buy, im no expert.

Go out, get some sand, get some small rocks, get some slate. Free basing materials, all textured and easy to airbrush+drybrush and done.

Someone in another thread mentioned pouring a layer of Hydrocal into a shallow container and once it has cured, smashing it into a bunch of pieces. If you work the top of the mixture with a putty knife a bit just before it finishes curing, you can get a more natural top surface on the resulting "rock" to prevent the uniformity that you said you wanted to avoid. You can also set the tray on a slight angle as it cures to provide some variety in thickness and gives you an angled top surface.

If you want to get really involved, you can model several bases and the make molds of them to resin-cast yourself.

I'd second the rock/sand/slate option. Cheap and easy, and looks pretty good. I tend to save the slate for larger stuff though, and use fish tank gravel for uniformity.

I steal a piece or 2 of slate from gardens. Smash it up into little pieces and I'm sorted for basing bits for months.

Any special way to break them down? or is it simple bag + hammer?

You can break some slate just with your hands. It's pretty brittle stuff. You can get a roof slate from a builders merchant for a quid. It should do at least an army or two!

Pine bark. Once painted, it looks as much like the eroded face of sedimentary rock as an actual piece of slate. Actually, it's more convincing, much of the time, once scale is taken into account. You can also cut or drill through it easily, which makes pinning models to the base or modifying the shape/thickness easy. If you insist on using real rocks, small packages marketed at modelers are likely the most expensive way to get it.

not allowed. you need:

"these rocks replicate what one might see were they to gaze upon the twisted wastelands of badab. Each one is an epic exquisite display of slate detail and it is an absolute joy to place a citadel miniature ontop of one."

badab wasteland fineslate. only 45 dollars for 10 pieces.
