What happens when a rending weapon shoots at an artillery battery?  I'm asking about artillery, as outlined in the BGB, not a basilisk etc. instead,  a squad, with guns, classified as artillery.

I recently played a game where a land speeder tornado fired at an Eldar Vibrocannon battery. It would seem there is an immovable object and an unstoppable force at work.

When firing at artillery, one must determine what is hit, the guns or crew, by rolling a second roll after the to hit roll.  But when firing rending weapons (at infantry) a "6" to hit indicates a rend.  Basically an artillery unit is comprised of both vehicles and of infantry.

What happens?

(I will post how my opponent and I resolved this odd quandry, perhaps incorrectly, but wanted to give some folks a chance to comment first.)

Perhaps I am missing something, looks simple. Make the second roll, if infantry hit, no armor save, if gun hit add str + 6 + d6 to see if penitrating or glancing results per rending rule pg 32. I think something is burning...

Perhaps, that is one way.  However, please recall that rending vs AV is NOT determined by the to hit roll, but instead by the AP roll afterward, so if one rolls the Artillery targets after a to hit roll, for original rending to hit rolls of 6, they would technically lose the rending hits if they hit the vehicles, (besides it only takes a 4 to glance the cannons and destroy them, so counting a to hit roll of 6 vs a subsequent gun location roll, would automatically destroy the guns with a 6+6+D6 >= 13 > 10, perhaps a bit advantageous for the firer).

I still like your post but I don't think it is the right answer, look again.

So? You haven't 'lost' anything... if it hits the gun, it hits the gun.

Until you have resolved which model has been hit, the 6 is merely a hit. If it hits the crew, then the Rending rule comes into play. If it hits the gun, you roll for armour pen.

Indeed, thats actually how we played it! But I had another idea, why not roll 4 dice for targets first, then roll the to hits seperately once you know what the targets are?

?

Because that's not how it works...?

Seriously, the rules as they are work fine.

Ah yes, I was mistaken about the roll to hit vs AV roll, sorry. The 6 to hit is rending if it does hit the crew, the 6 to hit is simply a hit vs the gun, then roll the AV which is str + d6, or an extra d6 if another six is rolled. Artillery rules are on pg 56, guns have an AV of 10, destroyed on any glancing or penetrating hit. Still pretty simple, no sense complicating it.
