I know that normally, the answer would be no. Generally the marines have access to better equipment, but what about chapters that have gone renegade? I'd imagine that those chapters wouldn't really have access to regular supply lines, so would it be conceivable that a renegade chapter would augment their armories with modified Guard equipment? Like, let's say Renegade Chapter X is running low on equipment and they've just lost one of their last functioning Predator tanks. However, they managed to get their hands on a Leman Russ. Would it be plausible that they'd use that Leman Russ themselves to replace the lost tank?

I think the biggest issue here would simply be the basic size of the average space marine.

To use your example of the Leman Russ, its simply very hard to fit an 600lb 8ft tall hulking behemoth (without power armor mind you) into a small tank seat designed for a 150-200lb 6ft human.

I'd imagine the local Tehcmarines would be more apt to use the Russ as scavenge material to patch up / build from scrap their own vehicles.

I think it would depend on a number of variables. How strict the chapter was, what the situation was, and what the equipment was.

In a lasting defense roll, with imperial guard support, if ammunition were to run out and resupply was going to be a while, I could see a SM captain using IG weapons rather than nothing. I could see the logic behind it being that IG equipment, although inferior to SM gear, is still a tool made by the imperium used to vanquish the foes of the emperor.

A space marine trying to fit in an IG tank won't really fit, likewise their gigantic armored fingers probably won't work well trying to aim and fire a human sized Lasgun.

They might toss humans they've picked up along the way into the guard vehicle, but they wouldn't really fit themselves, as was already noted. The weapons themselves...If they fit and work, they fit and work. If they're smaller, they may not be operable.

I don't remember in what book it was, but a space marine grabbed the heavy stubber the humans were using against him and just used it like a bolter. A bit of their own medicine to see how it feels like

I think I remember that he was actually having fun and was a bit disapointed when it jammed because of low maintenance.

Considering that you can take upgrades in the HH books to make certain vehicle be piloted by Space Marines, I'd say yes.

Emphasis on 'Certain Vehicles'

After all, the Land Raider used to be a MBT...

The space wolves used to have a Leman Russ in their codex. I would expect that if they really wanted to use an IG tank they would just have chapter serfs operate it.

Well sometimes renegade space marines take weapons from they people they killed as trophies and they decorate it with skulls and stuff. The renegades usually fight the Imperium so yeah...

It's in the realm of possibility for the fluff, but it would require some retrofitting/modding to make it work. It's mostly just a question of physical size, since Marines are huge. Marines would rather use their holy/consecrated weapons, but in times of desperation I don't see why they wouldn't go full-on Rambo with a heavy stubber ripped from the cupola of a tank.

Poor example since the Leman Russ used to be in the Space Wolves codex and it was crewed by marines.

I see no reason why they wouldn't use a Lasgun if their bolter was out of ammo for example. All it would take is to rip off the trigger guard so he could access the trigger.

You mean like the Rhino?

(and in GW's own fluff, Marines are still 7 feet tall)

If you can come up with a reasonalble bit of fluff, i think it could work. Marines comandeering (sp?) a Russ or Basilisk under desperate curcumstances would look really cool.

I think something like: A group of marines stranded on a distant planet (maybe gone renegade, maybe sent on a crusade in penance for some past wrong doing) sent to support an army of guardsmen but arrieve to find few survivors. The chapter suffer some heavy losses at the hands of whatevert enemy f*ed up the guard but manage to defeat that wave of the attack. In desperation, severely lacking in fire support the chapters techs fix up some damaged guard vehicles ready for the next assault.

To be fair, it was never something they should have had in the first place, it was largely an excuse to find another outlet to sell a new upgrade kit for (since the LRE was new at the time). The fluff for the LRBT states that it's cramped even for guardsmen who are normal humans,, fitting a 600lb, 7-8ft tall fully armored SPace Marine inside, much less an entire crew of them, would be...anatomically impossible.

During the battle for Calth but only as an emergency measure.

Ultramarines in at least one engagement used human sized lasguns against the initial cultist waves to conserve boltgun ammunition for the follow up attack by the Word Bearer legion. I think the only mod was to snap off the trigger guard.

Deathwatch does, so yeah, you can

Also Calth has examples all over the place in all three books. But if you are asking in game.... If you're running guard allies and you want to use scouts as veteran counts as and then run legal allied vehicles, sure.

If you want to run a basilisk and two LRusses because it fits your "fluff"... Haha, No.

Back in the day, all imperial forces (i.e., Guard, Marines, and Squats) shared the following equipment:

Land Raiders
Land Speeders
Dreadnoughts
Rhinos
Jet Bikes
Bikes
Assault Bikes
Jump Packs
Drop Pods
Automated weapon platforms
Multilaser
Leman Russ Battle Tank
Field Artillery

As the years have past and different armies became separate entities with their own unique play-style and equipment lists, certain shared gear became restricted to specific armies.

So yes, Space Marines use to have Multilasers and Leman Russ's just like Guard use to have Land Raiders, Speeders, Dreads, Rhinos, Bikes, Jump Pack assault troops, etc.

Except for when we could buy them as Guard units, along with Beastmen.

Let us not speak of the great unclean author,

Also, im pretty sure he did not write that one, but im not 100%

As for the topic, I think that codex bound Space Marines would never use guard equipment, since they have only trained with X equipment, wherein that is the most sacred and holy equipment for the most blessed and holy warriors of the emperor. As for less bound ones, Im sure they would use whatever works. Space Marines are all in essence fighters and they will not die without taking as much of their foes with them. I only believe that the more rigid Chapters, such as Ultramarines, will get into a knife fight after running out of ammo before they pick up guard equipment. I also agree with the sentiment that a Space marine would not be able to use guard equipment, their fingers would have to be HUGE! and if youve ever seen a real tank, the buttons arent exactly large and far apart. If a space marine even managed to fit i'm sure he'd just pound the controls until they broke or he blew himself up.
