kind of depends what armour/chapter/army/style you are going for.

you could for example use black as the base color and use purple for highlights if you are going for a dark theme.

also mixing purple with a bit of black for the base color should work really well.

Well a simple way would be to prime black and use xereus purple. Wash it with either druchii violet or just a black wash. Highlighting with Genestealer Purple or if that is to light for you a 1:1 mix of genestealer purple and xereus purple.

I'm useing a similar schema for my slaanesh chaos marines.

A few examples of the resulting purple:
Spoiler:

If this is still not dark enough just add another layer or two of druchii violet wash.

I have a few different purple dudes in my gallery, done in a few different ways. Easiest is beaten purple or some other dark purple, washed black or blue and given a good contrasting color like gold to do trim in. Highlighted with warlock purple.

Another one is black basecoat, mithril silver over armor with a thinned black ink to bring out detail, then several very thinned coats of purple wash til you get the shade you want.

I don`t know which base purple you have but you could use the skin palette of paints for highlighting. These are overall brownish desaturated reds that could keep the purple from looking bland. And for the shading you could use something greenish, also to add some flavour (do they sell cam green anymore?).
Just try a few paints and ratios on your palette so you don't waste paint and then use what you think looks best.

Not a fan of purple armour usually, but that chaos lord looks awesome.
If a little out of focus.

If I could suggest a purple?

I know somewhere out there is a blue so dark, that when painted over black, it looks purple. Using this as shadow, and then the next layer a bruised dark purple, and then a highlight over that would look fantastic. I've wanted to do this for a while, but I just can't justify starting another project with so many already on the go.
