This is going to my...third attempt I think at a project blog, and this time I'm going to keep with it lol

Background: I started 40k many many years ago. I got my first model (a Grey Knight with psycannon) and had NO clue what he was or anything. But after I painted him I knew I wanted to collect Space marines. The following day I bought two combat squads and the Dark Angels Codex and since then have haphazardly created a Space Marine army dubbed The Devil Dogs. Well the years went by and I have changed and I look at my chapter, and it doesn't look, or feel, like it's mine. A lot has happened in the past years, I've learned a great deal of myself and want my army to express that. So this blog will show the transition my Space Marines make, from the Devil Dogs that they were, and the Knights of Oorai that they will become.

I initially named them Devil Dogs in honor of the United States Marine Corps, which until the past 8 months, I had wanted to join. Long story short I've reconsidered enlistment, I may still do it but I don't know. However, I have rediscovered my love for anime and all things surrounding it. So I want my army to reflect that. The name itself is anime based (and subject to change if I can think of something better). It is a twist from an anime called Girls Und Panzer, in which schools have teams of tanks (all crewed by girls) and they battle each other. The main characters' school is called Oorai thus where the name Knights of Oorai comes from. I plan on stripping them of their paint, and rebasing them (seeing as how I've never decorated their bases), I also plan to go so far as to completely scrap some minis and essentially rebuild units. I would appreciate any and all suggestions, encouregment, advise, really anything anyone is willing to give greatly. I'm quite nervous and apprehensive about this, as I'm still trying to decide on paint and a symbol.

Army Background: In the closing days of the Horus Heresy, the Emperor, in secret, created one last legion; or at least he attempted to. Watching the galaxy dissolve into civil war, his sons warring amongst themselves, his people worshiping him as a god; the future was bleak and far from certain. But in this time he created one last legion. With no primarch, no inherent leader he feared they would not succeed at the mission he gave them; survive, and to always defend mankind. in the closing moments of the siege of Terra this unnamed legion went out on a sad handful of cruisers. The Emperor himself watched as over three fourths of their vessels were destroyed, neither side knowing them as ally. His heart heavy, feeling as though his last ditch effort was for naught, he left to confront Horus.

Unknown to their creator, all was not lost. They found a home. In an isolated system, seemingly untouched by the passage of time no less. The human colonists they found had spent to past thousands of years in peace. How they were sparred from the predations of aliens and other forces is unknown. Even during the heresy they knew not the horrors unfolding throughout the galaxy. It was in this system that the Knights of Oorai were born. Though there was some dispute in the beginning about leadership and aesthetics of their legion, in the end it was the inhabitants of the populated planet that would settle the matter, for they were from a colony ship whose occupants were part of a test. When humans first went out into the depths of space some ships were more, peculiar than others. This group had a prominent attachment to what was known on old Terra as "Anime" and "Manga". And through these mediums the Knights of Oorai believed they understood their goal given to them by the Emperor. Surely these tails of heroes and peace must be what their lord meant for them to strive for? Of course not, but upon looking at the state of the galaxy during and after the heresy, perhaps striving for something so unrealistically perfect wouldn't be the worst course of action? It was agreed among the legion that this would be their guiding light. That they would take from this anime and manga, and in turn attempt to be as strong, stoic, and courageous as the characters from these tails.

10,000 years later, the Knights of Oorai have grown to be a fine chapter. Though low in number, each astartes holds dear to both their mission and their ideals. Never compromising either. They have survived, if just barely, by recruiting from warzones and places left for dead by the imperium of man. They are disdainful of what mankind has become, feeling though as they all have tossed aside the teaching of the Emperor and instead twisted his words to suit their desires. Countless billions are killed by fanatical inquisitors, even more so loss in the constant grinder that is the Imperium's wars. They are never content. Not even truly striving for peace. But the mission given to them was not to save the Imperium, but to save humanity. They do not see the scope of heretic and traiter or loyalist. They see merely people, who either are a threat to humanity or are not. It is with this vision that they save those who can be saved from the murderous gaze of the Imperium. Guard units that have abandoned post, astartes who've left their chapters behind. Should they still desire to fight for humanities sake, they are accepted and integrated. True, few of their current battle brothers are linked to the original legionaries who left Terra just prior to the heresy's end. But all have the same goal, to save mankind from both it's enemies; and itself.

As well as inducting new recruits both in the form of young men and woman to be changed into astartes and those wayward souls that they've saved, the Knights of Oorai have also recruited a sizable army. When they found their soon to be homeworld, it had three primary territories; Liberion, Orussia, and Karlsland. With smaller territories intermixed: Suomus, Fuso, Galia, Britania, and Romagna. The smaller territories, whilst maintaining small security forces, send the majority of recruits to the other three primary territories for training. Though they use outdated wargear, it is reliable and those using it are veterans in their use. And over the years their arsenal has been supplemented with the detritus of war, giving them much needed heavy weapons. Each of the three large territories has its own specialties in creating the worlds armies; Liberion and Karlsland supply the whole of the infantry, with Liberion being the bulk. Liberion Marines are tenacious and proud, while Karlsland Grenadiers are stoic and reserved. Although all three produce weapons and war machines, only Karlsland trains the crews for the worlds armored regiments. At the Kuromorimine School of Tankery, Karlsland instructs new recruits in the art of armored warfare. And last is Orussia, they send troops to the other territories for training, and supply the worlds armies with advanced officer training and commissars, to look after the morale of the troops. Now, these commissars are far less trigger happy than their Imperial counterparts but are no less effective. Each Territory also houses its own aircraft wings, between fighters, bombers and attack aircraft; however, the best pilots from them all go to join the Joint Fighter Wings. It is these Joint Fighter Wings that go out with the Knights of Oorai on campaign. This is the case only for fighters and attack aircraft, bomber squadrons are rotated through frontline and defense duties.

During a long fought battle with a splinter Tyranid fleet the Knights of Oorai found their newest and most unlikely allies. Deposited from the warp near their retreating fleet was a small fleet of ships that bore imperial insignia but looked like no ships they'd seen in thousands of years. As fate would have it, during the Horus Heresy, a detachment of Death Guard alongside Salamanders fleeing from a lost battle were lost in the warp, 10,000 years later got dropped in the path of the Knights of Oorai. Though there are certain, discrepancies between the Death Guard and Salamanders, they were both loyal forces during the heresy. Given how the Death Guard legion as a whole turned against the Emperor, this unit of legionaries did not side with their primarch. Given the opportunity to earn their honor back they happily joined the small chapter. The Salamanders though, were harder to sway into staying. As a loyal legion, they had nothing to fear about joining their brothers; who they had learned were still focused on keeping collateral to a minimum and saving civilians and guard units. But they saw the state of the Imperium, and believed they would do more good by staying with the hunted marines. The small Solar Auxilia force accompanying them were also happy to fight beside them.

EDIT: Improved the background fluff, and modified a few details. I'll keep fleshing it out as I get more models and as ideas come to me.

So a Space Marine chapter with Anime elements in it? *High-pitched girl like squee*

Well, about the paint scheme and symbol, I would say to look into that Anime that provoked this change of heart. I searched for some pics of the anime (What GLORIOUS amount of fan-service <3) and their school uniform seems to be White, Green with the Black "scarf". Why not try to incorporate these colors to your paint scheme?

Something I haven't found out was if the girls have a particular symbol. Tank, team, school whatever you could draw some inspiration from.

I like their fluff, they look like a more "soft" Minotaurs chapter since they even take in Renegades. But I'm curious, you say they accept women but what for? They can't be turned into Space Marines (unless you wish to commit that heresy ) and even if they could, they need to be young to be converted into Space Marines. Just curious, you should do what you want!

The Tau and Eldar alliance, I assume you are planning having these armies as allies?

And last but not least: I find very, very, very strange how so many Captains survived when most of the Chapter is dead. Usually they will stand and die with their battle brothers if all hope is lost they won't, ya know, "Screw you guys, I'm going home!" .

About bitz. I dunno, tell us some more detailed ideas about what you plan and we'll search our known 3rd party suppliers (at least I will ) for something that resembles it.

Good luck with your project mate, ye have my support!

Well, a LOT of anime brough this about....Yes most are very Fan servicy but oh well ^^; though I intend to incorporate as much as I can into my army.

A already plan on putting unique markings on my tanks ^^ I just need to get more of them first. I'm already using 1/35th scale German Panthers as the body for a couple of Malcadors for my IG army and my continue that with similar tanks for my Space Marines (Like getting proper sized M133 APC's to replace rhinos)

The whole women part, one so that I can have more unique bare heads, and two because specifically I want a female librarian, and name her Louise (From an anime Familiar of Zero) beause Louise is only good at blowing stuff up hahaha and aren't the Sisters of Battle just female marines?

Yes, I like a lot of Tau and Eldar units, just not enough of them to get a dedicated army.

I'm not too sure how this happened either, just over the years I had more fun making unique leaders. I plan on scrapping several though to fix parts of my army and free up Captains to fill with new and improved ones.

As far as bitz, the only ones that truly escape me are female heads. Ebay has most weapons I could want but the heads are proving to be troublesome.

Gah! I forgot to mention the IG element I need to fix that...Though all my guardsmen really need are paint, and a name. They are already pretty customized with kitbashed tanks and no lasguns or laspistols at all. They all have Ak-47's, scratcbuilt what look like 9mm, or bolt weapons.

Foul xenos?! Of course they're heretics.

But seriously, I really enjoy the fluff. It sort of reminds me of some of the rumours around Cypher and even how the Alpha Legion started to operate.
Do you have any plans for a colour scheme?

Not really, currently they are red. I tried out a blue/grey test scheme but it didn't turn out good so i'm back to the drawing board.

First of all, nothing wrong with some fan-service

Second: That Sisters of Battle remark is enough to get you shot because of extra Heresy There are NO female space marines, except, possibly, Slaanesh worshiping ones. The fluff is clear the process that transforms a human into a Space Marine doesn't work on woman. Many people will raise an eyebrow with the idea of a female space marine and dismiss it as idiotic. Me, I think "It's your models, do what you wish".
Now about SoB: No, they are regular women with Power Armors. They are human just like me and you are, just have an absolute faith and willpower. (Unfortunately said Power Armor doesn't increase their Strength in in-game, something very stupid)

Third: That Louise characters look hilarious

Edit: Here's some female heads http://www.meowmeowminis.com/Heads/cat1646482_1511168.aspx

Amen.

If they can give the SoB power armor why can't they give it to more troops? Seriously, this is why I hate the Imperium...it's run by motards. I agree I'm pulling the "My models I do what I want" then use my female marines to crush everything mwahaha

Seriously, in the anime she is a mage, and anytime she tries to cast any spell she causes an explosion. She is walking C4.

Found another: http://basicks.eu/shop/index.php?id_product=207&controller=product&id_lang=1

(that one I'm not sure it's good for 28mm heroic scale as the SM are, but I guess you can send an email asking that).

Well, about your power armor question, I don't want to start an enormous lore discussion, but I think it's because of resources. There are billions of billions of Imperial Guardsmen spread all around the Imperium. Men are cheap. Power armors aren't.

Thanks I'll take a look.

I get that, but it wouldn't kill them to think "Maybe with the countless soldiers we have, if we gave them GOOD guns and gear we might actually WIN all these never ending wars". But your right lol back on topic we go. I'm gonna try to use my phone to take som pics of my sm army right now.

I might be able to look through Eldar/Dark Eldar heads cause I think they have female heads.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well my phone is taking awful pictures, so they will have to wait till tomorrow night when I can borrow a camera over my nights off from work. Till then I'll start on a list stuff that needs work.

-Name (I like Knights of Oorai but I want to make sure)
-Colors
-Iconography
-Markings (Company/Squad)

I have some ideas that I'll start sketching.

and also a shopping list of bitz to start getting as well as look at my army and decide who's gonna get scrapped for parts. So I can start the long jouney of recreation.

Well I found bases to give my entire army. And not nearly as expensive as I was expecting. http://www.forgecraftgames.com/shop/battlefield-bases/25mm-diamond-plate-bases-25-pcs/

I think I'm going to use Claymore (anime/manga) character symbols as company markings. Either that, or pick out three to use as assault/tactical/devestator markings.

I'm also going to get weapons and riot shields from Anvil Industry, I'm a little iffy about tryin to change all the weapons in my army because I'm afraid the supporting hands will break but I could just replace them so idk. I may go either way on that one.

I'll also be getting some female heads from http://www.meowmeowminis.com/Galactic_Chevaliers_Bare_Heads_5/p1646481_7725411.aspx

However on the head note, if I can't find exactly what I want (generic heads are good but there are some more specific hair styles I want) I may try to sculpt the heir onto the heads myself (though that will take forever and a day).

Yes a cookie!!

Sorry about lack of pictures. I don't know when I'll have access to a camera and my phone just isn't cutting it.

However! Some work is being done! I recycled about half of my characters for parts and made a command squad. A buddy of mine gave me all the apothecary bitz and banner from a DA ravenwing command squad box since he accidently got two and only needs one. All in exchange for a flying base so he's pretty freaking awesome.

So my phone finally took a couple ok pictures...its about time.

A couple marines so you can see the old color scheme and how aweful I am at painting. As well as the biggest tanks of my supporting guard forces, two Reich pattern Malcadors, one annihilator and one defender (cookie to whomever first tells me what these were originally mwahaha). No real update on the marines as I'm waiting for their new bases to come in the mail. But the guardsmen may be getting a new tank. A Reich pattern Baneblade made out of a - whoops, don't wanna tell you just yet

Interesting idea for malcadors! How will you paint them?

-Gives you cookie- good job, now, did you know that or did you read my earlier post where I explained it? (totally forgot it was there hehe)

I thought it was a Tiger II at first, till I started playing World of Tanks and learned what they looked like.

I have no clue how to paint them, I probably won't decide till I finish that sort of work on my marines cause I want them to match.

I knew, saw one in real life just the other day!

And it's a part of the job to know vehicles... Skip the puddle-boys and join the tank corps instead, and I can guarantee that you will have a lot more fun!

Well, to the important stuff, your painting. It's quite hard to see due to the quality of your pics, but it seems a bit flat. Are you using washes and highlights?
And it is worth taking a minute or two basing them, never mind if it is only sand or flock. That will raise your minis very much with just a small amount of work

I'm very envious of you.

I know the quality of the pictures sucks, that's what happens when you have no real amera and are stuck with a phone cam.

BUT, I don't use washes, never had the chance, and never had the patience to do proper highlights. All my paint scheme is, is a base of chaos black, a dry brush of scab red, and a dr brush of mechrite red and with details picked out (Eyes, gold bits, cloth etc.)

As far as the bases, I've tried, but I don't like the look of them on grass or dirt. But I found some bases I'm getting that are perfect I'll get my whole army transferred onto these type of bases and it should look really good.

To say the least, it's original kinda shows how crazy this army is going to be. Oh, and because the paint scheme is so dark, the white and light blue really stand out a lot.

that's why I want to stick with a black/red color sheme.
