I used to do 40k a few years ago and I am thinking about getting into it again. If I am going to get back into the hobby I would like to start a new army and the armies in the poll are the ones I'm interested in.

I like Chaos because I've heard they are a good starring army and I like their HQ's and background. I like Grey Knights because I like the look of terminators and they are troop choices I believe. I like Tau because they have a lot of technology. I like Dark Eldar because I like the look of some of their units and that not many people play them.

GK is probably your choice, then. It's the best starting army of the four (cheap to buy, and forgiving to play). It actually has some neat technology to it a bit (joakero, psy-ammo, force everything, neat inquisitor toys) in a more fun play style than tau, and, as you mention, they can take terminators as troops.

Second to that, I'd do DE. The main problem with them is that they're not the best starter army by a long shot.

I also think GK are a good pick. They can take terminators as troops, or paladins if you take a specific HQ (paladins are better terminators). They are a cheap army to play if you go this route (low models) and can do mid range shooting and assault fairly competently. It will also get you introduced to some of the special rules like master crafting and preffered enemy. Also lets you get used to psykers without the need for the random tables of the new codexes.

Chaos has a lot of versatility. As does tau. With the recent update to tau they have become great at anti air.

Haven't played much of the grey knights but their models look cool and having a league of psykers is cool.

If you are coming back I would stay way from dark eldar. I found myself frustrated with how fragile their vehicles and troops are. Maybe pick up some models on the side and work your way up to it.

I have a question. Because GK's have a low modal count are they bad at objective games?

And are the GK's assassin any good. A question I have about Chaos is can their HQ's be turned in to spawn if you fail something and is that really bad?

I'm a Tau player, but for what you want I'd roll with grey knights. Not the least of which is because there's one piece of wargear that just makes Tau curl up in a corner and weep profusely to themselves (plasma siphon, although it's not "auto lose" bad, it makes a lot of things in the Tau codex very unhappy).

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

No.

Firstly, they have access to henchmen MSU spam, which means they can have a lot of scoring units.

Secondly, if you don't go that route, then remember that you just have to have more objectives than your opponent. If you kill your opponent off of his objectives (or merely contest them), you can win the game with just one objective. Furthermore, because of the existence of secondaries, you don't even need to have more than your opponent - you just have to have the same number - to win the game.

Yes a CSM HQ can turn into Spawn. The badness of it depends on how many points you put into the HQ. A barebones lord might be improved, but if you took Abbadon, then you lost alot of points.

I think based on what you said you like that GK would be a great choice for you. They are the bosses of mid-range firepower. They are also no slouches in Cc thanks to force weapons and Hammerhand.

Although the vote is saying CSM I think I'm going to go with GK because most of the comments said GK and were so helpful and I thank you all for that. My final question is how many people play GK because I heard they were OP in 5th edition are they still OP? Because I don't like being an army that everyone plays and people that don't hate to play them.

Voting GK, they're forgiving, fun and have a fair amount of variety with the inquisitorial warband option. I've been playing them the most in 6th recently and I've really enjoyed them. If you go with the standard paint scheme, they are easy to paint, and with their popularity being lower than in 5th edition, you can get them used cheaper than some of their Tau contemporaries.

They're not OP, but they are like other Marines in that they are somewhat forgiving if you get mismatched against an unfavorable unit.

As much as I love my DE, I'd recommend against them as a starter army. I stopped for years and came back and got beaten hard when I played with my DE. Fortunately, they're my old 3rd ed. models so I didn't spent lots of money to lose! I'd say later down the line once you've got an idea of how the rules have changed and how everyone else in your playing group plays, then consider going DE.

Here's to me in my sober mood,
When I ramble, sit, and think.
Here's to me in my drunken mood,
When I gamble, sin, and drink.
And when my days are over,
And from this world I pass,
I hope they bury me upside down,
So the world can kiss my ass!
