Just today there was a Warmachine tournament at my FLGS...We were in the only table that wasn't taken in the corner. Now there just so happened to be the most obnoxious person I think I've ever met in my life. Now it was packed and pretty loud anyways, but this person would shout his orders and make the most dumb sound effects. He then refused to take his army box off our table because of his "Senority" over us.
Now we couldn't use the corner we deployed in because of them, but to top it all off....I had 5 vanguard and a dreadnought ready to play and he swung his arms around making a swoosh like he was swinging a friggin' sword and knocked everything over. I asked him what the F@^k he thought he was doing that he is over 20 and shouldn't be flailing his arms around like a dumba$$...so he called me a noob....lol.
The FLGS manager assured me that he would be talked to...now weather that happened or not I don't know but it was a terrible experience to know one of the "Veterans" is a complete dbag.

I never quite understand how some LGS' stay in business for as long as they do. So many seem to foster a close knit cadre of outsider (or "customers" as they're known) warding weirdos.
I've noticed a trend of friendly, well lit, professionally run comics book stores recently, hopefully that catches on more in hobby shops.

My worst experience was also my first real introduction to GW and 40k. It was at a small game store in Jensen Beach FL, late 1995. I had seen the GS stuff at the FLGS/hobby shop I frequented in CT, but never payed much attention to it. I was into Battletech and RPG stuff at the time.
Well when I moved to FL this one particular game store was the only place even remotely close to me. So I checked it out. They had some RPG stuff, a small smattering of various minis, and bunch of GW. So I ended up buying some GW just to build and paint. One day the guys there talk me into trying some 40k. They knew I had never played before. They then proceeded to take turns mopping the table with me, and being more than mildly disgusted that I didnt know the rules, tactics, etc of the game.
Needless to say I didnt return there. Ive noticed the same problems before. I think it stems from the fact that many stores are started by gamers who then turn around and give the prefered treatment and constant "bro deals" to his buddies. Besides creating a bad atmosphere it also ultimately leads to the stores downfall, as a customer base made mostly of 5-10 people getting deep discounts isnt enough to keep a store going.
We had a great store going for a while. My buddy was the manager and I worked part time after my real job. We had a couple other good people there too. We used to chat it up with everyone...no matter what game, comic, anime, etc you were into one of us knew about it, or were even really into it. The place started as a small meta bookstore & comic store. My buddy got in there and introduced the owner to the world of games, both RPG and minis. It didnt take long before games were 55% of store sales. However, the owner was into the wicca/meta stuff, and that group frowned on her "selling out" by selling games. So she opened a yoga studio/meta store a few doors down in the same plaza...then proceeded to funnel the profits from the game/book store into the yoga shop until the stores debt was huge and she closed it.
That was about 8 years ago. There are several small games stores around, and many have come and gone, but none have/had it going like we did.

The shop just isn't as welcoming as you'd think. I asked if I could just check the codex for one quick rule because I forgot mine (NOT borrow it) and the shop clerk gives me a dirty look and just says, "No...what do you think you can just use this shop like its your home...god.."
Sadly being one of the only well established GW shops in CT I need to go there. I'm going to find a different one.
Oh! And they also gave me a stern talking to for taking 2 cars for objectives in our game from the terrain table...but then when a regular takes it nothing happens, they also give out primer, paint, etc. to their friends... thought it was free paint day.

I would have thought there would be several good places to get GW and gaming stuff in general in CT. I know games/hobby shops werent too hard to come by when I left the state in 1996. Here in FL its very different. Besides the usual problems that plague game/hobby stores we have weather as well. In CT the winter seemed to fuel the indoor hobby, while here in FL the year round decent weather hurts it. Most people want to do outdoor stuff. There are a couple very small stores within an hour of me, but to get to a truly good one I have to drive around 2 1/2 hours. Even then their stock is sketchy. Like right now being the height of summer stock is low.
My friend and I used to frequent an awesome place called War and Pieces...they were in West Hartford. A google search tells me they went out of business around 2007. Must admit Im sad but not surprised...seems everytime I go home to visit or look up something its gone.

Don't get me wrong, its a good hobby shop, but only when the obnoxious people aren't there. I found a couple places, hopefully gonna check em' out, but I'm in no rush I have about 5 friends that play together and we have a couple boards, it's just nice to see how to community is going.

First the guy took forever to ring me up trying to get my to buy the starter box for ogres, I told him i wasnt interested that i just wanted the codex and already had 2 fantasy armies at over 3000 points and was just getting the codex for now. He tried again saying that it was a great deal and explaining what was in it, i again told him no.
He then went off on a tangent asking if i played 40k, i said no that i wasnt really interested, and fantasy already took up most of my free time. He then said i should play a trial game with him to see if i liked the feel of it. Told him i wasnt interested and just wanted the codex. He said just let me show you how it works, you might like it.
Then i walked out of the store, without getting what i had came for.
I understand trying to get people into the game, but when someone walks in, goes straight to what they are after then straight to checkout, they obviously know what they want...[/quote.
This is exactly what bugs me about the stores. I buy my stuff from a small local store where the single staff member knows me, what I collect and what I am or am not interested in. Go to a larger store or a place where your face isn't regularly seen and they bombard you with insincere welcomes (the type of welcome that says, "Hi, we know you're here and we're watching you"). Add to that the fact that they ask what you play, "40k" "oh, ever tried fantasy, theres all this flash new stuff... look at the flash new stuff, come on play a game with the flash new stuff." No thank you I don't want to play fantasy battle, I just want my Khemri brown and some glue. "fantasy..." no, just khemri brown and glue for f*&k's sake!

Worst experience for me was when I worked at a LGS 6 years ago.
The manager was into Magic. I was into 40k. Needless to say, the day the big green tables disappeared, I got pretty vocal. He continued to try and sell GW products, but refused to foster the game. After 1 month of not being able to play, and hearing other people complain, I just packed up and quit.
Last I heard, the shop is still in business but under "different management". The fact that they are still in business is a total mystery to me (maybe they make enough money just off Magic).

The best FLGS around here IMO has a large Magic crowd and still manages to have minis tables at the back. Honestly though, he makes so much more off of it than 40k. Heck, he even made more off of Anima Tactics when I was actively recruiting people than off of 40k, which is sad considering how large our community is. Expensive crappy written hard to get into game = difficult sell while card games are a different story.

My LGS says they make most their money of magic so they foster the heck out of that game, but they still have a ton of gaming space and have a a large area for the store 40k terrain so its not as bad as your situation

MTG by far is one of WotC's best sellers, simply because of the volume they get in each new expansion that comes out. It really is just a huge cash cow. I'm not surprised at all that a store can survive alone on MTG, however any smart Manager/Owner in the gaming industry will expand well beyond just what MTG has to offer.
Anyways, to add to the list of "worst experiences", this happened while I was on my way to the LGS, and not at the store. While driving on the highway to said store, a truck that was driving about 30 yards ahead of me drove over some debris on the ground. The debris then shot out of it's rear tires, sending said debris towards my car. I swerve slightly as the debris comes toward my car, and feel my car drive over something. Nothing of note happens (no warning lights or anything), so I presume that my car is fine. When I finally get to the LGS, I noticed that a 3" metal rod was sticking into the grill of my car. I yank it out, and then notice some fluids leaking on the floor. The rod easily weighed at least 10 lbs, and had it shot up another foot higher, it could've very well impaled me while I was driving.
So as far as worst experiences "while going" to a LGS? Absolutely up there for me.

Another Connecticut Gamer here.
There is a like one decent store anywhere near me, and thats like a 40 minute drive.
The closer stores are Comic Book Combo stores which seem to function more like someones mothers basement. You walk and eyes, squinting from the sunlight, peer at you like you are disturbing them or make you feel like you've walked in on some arcane ritual.
Ive stopped spending my money there (and I spend a considerable amount), and instead head up to a place where the people make an attempt to make you feel welcome and you aren't made to feel awkward or like you are intruding about pulling up a chair and breaking open the models you just bought.

Former CT gamer here. Kinda bummed to see that the gaming scene isnt better up there, almost sounds as bad as it is down here in FL.
Ive been to several places like you describe. Like you walked into a private club not a store. Gets even worse if you are there for something that isnt the "house game" so to speak.

Happened to me the other day, actually.
Drove a few hours to go shopping somewhere else other than the usual mall here with the girlfriend. The mall also happened to have a GW, so I figured, why not.
Walk in. I get the usual "Hey, how it's going, what armies do you play etc" from the black shirt. Meanwhile, while this is going on he's seriously eye(insert swear word here) the hell out of my girlfriend noticing and commenting on the slightest details like her sixteenth note tattoo that's 85% covered up.
I tell him I play guard for the most part and start telling him the types of lists I run. He gets all up in arms and starting saying, "IF YOURE NOT PLAYING LEAFBLOWER YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG" more or less.
I just walked out after that.

I went into a GW with my girlfriend while we were in the small shopping around and such. We go in, start chatting with some people, buy some purchases talk to some strangers ect ect,
I ask this one azn guy what they are playing and he just looks at me confused and scared... Yay for the kids with no social skills in GW.
Maybe he was afraid cause i have an attractive girlfriend and am a bodybuilder.

LOL I went in there with my cousin who is a girl, and the guy working there is trying to sell me some necrons (Why I have no clue..) then he says, "Oh yea you sure are a lucky guy." Looking at my cousin... I'm like, "Yea... this is my cousin...I'm gonna get going now..." And just left.
One of the most awkward moments of my life.

I have had similar experiences to ALL of the previously posted. Wheter in a FLGS or GW it happens to be something wierd happens. For the most part though my experiences are positive otherwise I probably wouldn't be a gamer.
Here are a couple of my most annoying.
1) We were playing a game of risk most of us knew the rules but we had one noob. All game the store clerk was using him as a buffer and playing him as his buddy. So I mention that the newb should wipe out the clerk before the clerk gets him. To this the clerk proceeds to ridicule me directly about how I was "stupid" and that would be the worst thing the Newb could do. I see red and stand up quickly and say "shut the *&($ up". He goes dead silent and I take a few breathers outside. LOL it was pretty funny now that I think about it.
2) I had shopped at this store for years but it is a big store and has lots of customers and since I am not in there everyday the clerks and owners don't really recognize me as a regular. Which I understand and I don't expect special treatment but on this day the manager on shift seemed to be having a rough day. He had been storming around the place for the fifteen minutes I had been there. I was casually glancing over minis and I see the new Lizardmen book or something and proceed to glance through it. The manager sees this and makes an immediate bee line to where I am standing. Takes the book out of my hands and tells me that his store isn't a library and If I wanted to look at the book I would have to purchase it. He then stands there until I leave the store.

You don't understand Risk much, it's a game about strategy but mostly manipulation, it's 'make them eat him so he doesn't make them eat you'.
The clerk understood that.

ust today there was a Warmachine tournament at my FLGS...We were in the only table that wasn't taken in the corner.
Oh! And they also gave me a stern talking to for taking 2 cars for objectives in our game from the terrain table...but then when a regular takes it nothing happens, they also give out primer, paint, etc. to their friends... thought it was free paint day.
Hi Revackey I usally tend to stay away from posting on sites since I just like to play games and have fun. This kinda put me over the edge though. I know the FLGS you are talking about since I was in the Warmachine Tournament that weekend. Yes we are a loud and excited bunch but I do not remember any models getting knocked over and I think I would have since I was on the table behind the corner table 2 times you said the person did it from???????? and if you told the owner who was the one there the whole day it would have been addressed quickly since he takes very little S$$T from anyone.
Next about the paints and primer....... There is a full and stocked Painting Bar at this LGS that the Owners keep very well stocked for us out of there own pockets. They are happy to prime a model for you too if you just ask...... Seeing I have only known these guys less than 6 months they seem to be some of the nicest people i have dealt with in my 20 years of gaming. They bend over backwards for there customers and I see that every time I go in there.
The shop just isn't as welcoming as you'd think. I asked if I could just check the codex for one quick rule because I forgot mine (NOT borrow it) and the shop clerk gives me a dirty look and just says, "No...what do you think you can just use this shop like its your home...god.."
About there books.... They keep them in bags so they don't get damaged or worn. They do this for the simple reason if your selling a product it should be in pristine condition if you buy it from a retail location, Not bent up and used. Also If the Clerk said that to you I would tell one of the owners since they only have one sales associate its not hard to find out who it was and get it taken care of.

Not a problem , I love it there, this was at a hobby shop, that had a huge amount of War Machine players, not sure about the Battle Standard, I haven't been there in a while just because I've gotten a board together with a couple of friends, but I would suggest it over any other place I've been.
