Well, it has been a while.
Thanks Fango. No, not an Architect. My degrees are strictly in the sciences-- Biochemistry to be precise. As I have said before, I did take a bunch of drafting courses in high school...
Very little hobby time. Sigh. What progress I have boils down to this:
Added the second porch to the styrofoam experiment, and decided to make an 'objective room' using corrugated cardboard, even though I know it is not an ideal building material. Some Imp of the Perverse convinced me to try.
Then of course, while I was thinking that the thick walls--inspired by the styrofoam building-- looked like they were going to work out ( part of the reason I used the cardboard), I realized that I had thickened them inwards, so that the outer dimensions of the building were 8"... For a proper objective room, the inner dimensions are supposed to be 8". Oops. or D'Oh. Either works.
I'll finish it, just to see what it'll look like, then I'll have to start on a correctly dimensioned objective room.
Paint the mini Sunday is still a thing, but I have been slowly painting one of the D&D minis that came with a boardgame-- Wrath of Ashardalon. Haven't taken any pictures of it. But I have been painting a few minutes every Sunday.
Thanks for Stopping by. Maybe more to show soon, I hope.

Thanks gents.
A touch more work. Finished roughing out the exterior walls,
and a stress test
31.75Kg. Pretty good for crappy cardboard.
Someone suggested that I make the not-objective room into a Turkish bath. Intriguing idea. I may do it. I deliberately left the floor separated from the building so I could freely make any sort of interior.
Since the not objective building has no other purpose (except maybe to show that crappy cardboard can be put to good use. Perhaps it is a poor scratch-builder who blames his tools materials after all ) I may 'link' it to the styrofoam one with a detachable skywalk or breezeway, or both. Make it part of a set with the guesthouse, and the styrofoam house-- which really has no 'purpose'-- and build a big house. Have sort of a desert estate sort of theme for the table.
Thanks for stopping by.

Stickin' it to the man again. Double post in your face Mr. Man
Thinking about tile work for the alcoves. Not necessarily these tiles-- they are from the experiments with printing from a while ago-- but something close in terms of color and size.

Thoughts on the tile idea? And what about windows in the alcoves? Not sure that windows will work with the tiles. The burnt siena stucco/adobe finish in previous buildings will be applied to this as well. And it goes well with blue or turquoise, so that'll be the tile color(s).
Plus A second story and of course an interesting roof. Oh, a dome too.

Nice work, Red.
I think only some of those need windows, and some can be just for potted plants or the aforementioned fountains.
The blue tiling will work well also.

This is a perfect idea. And those tiles are a perfect match. Uncanny. Thank You! Good Sir. And it even has my favorite color for a door.
Now to figure out how to gloss the tiles without using photo paper. I was thinking of using a clear tape, like Gorilla clear repair tape or the Scotch transparent heavy duty packing tape. They do well as a 'lamination' for the markers I've printed, at least the test pieces. I'll post the results of the experiment when I conduct it.
Eilif wrote:Love the windows and the tile pattern. Glad you didn't give up on this one. Not surprising that you make corrugated cardboard look better than most folks using more "high-end" materials.
It is what I learned to use, before we had foamcore. (early '80s high school) The trick was to treat it as structural and cover it up with something thick enough to smooth over the corrugation, spackle, filler, cardstock... As far as giving up, I found that it became a far more interesting project once I knew I did not have to stick to what I think is a fairly boring, but understandable set-up. I'll return to the objective room some time after this, but I have actual ideas for it now. This was a nice kick to get me out of what was a creative slump.
GawdamSumbish wrote:what about a mosaic? the alcoves could also house little fountains, which IIRC you have some experience with...
Fountains might make it tough to put models in there, but a few removable fountains as scatter seem like a good idea. Thanks. A few add on water effects might work too. The whole idea now is for the walls themselves to provide a fair range of cover opportunities. Long flat walls are not a good thing in Infinity. They make for boring buildings too.

Thanks. Maybe some sort of window over the doorway instead. As you can see I cut out holes for windows, but they really don't do anything for the piece, IMHO.
I appreciate the comments and suggestions, guys. Thank you all

So the experiment is a success
Print the tile pattern and seal it under the tape
Fit the pieces to the alcove
Profit!!!
Or something like that. I'll need to pay attention to how the grout lines at the corners line up, but this is good. The have the right sheen to indicate glazed tiles, even if the lighting is not the best.
Thanks once again for the suggestion, Theo.
Another note. This clamp and 60 grit sandpaper is not so good at making impressions in plasticard.
I did not crank it down really really tight though, since I don't want to break the clamp-- it is possible, I know. Looks like C-Clamps, as they are called hereabouts are the way to go. Or maybe build a mangle press...

So there we were a while ago, trying to find a good way to paint a varnish on a print-off to get a gloss finish... and sticky tape works fine.
Keep trying with the clamps. As I mentioned, a table vice would be ideal as it can squeeze as tight as you like (and I really had to do the G-clamp up as tight as I could) and has a larger area. I just couldn't get to the one we have in the garage as it's bolted to the bench and all my stuff is in the way...

Yeah, and it is something I used many years ago making chits for another game, but that stuff had a strong acetic acid smell to it, and was quite flimsy. This stuff is nice and thick. Now to find some in wider than 48mm size...
I think if I used a pony clamp or bar clamp and reduced the clamp face it could work. Barring that, there is the old fall back of taking a stiff wire brush and just hammering it.
Archer wrote:Not sure if you are a body builder or what, but you can break an adjustable clamp? That is quite an achievement, I have inherited a few that are older than my Dad was and they are rock solid no matter how badly I try to abuse them.
Not a body builder at all. just a bit unlucky. But that was years ago. The adjustable clamp, a counter-part to the one seen above, broke when the clamp face shifted (the thing at the end of the screw)-- it is not fixed or stabilized, and that is the problem with it compared to other clamps-- and the piece I was clamping down, very tightly, too tightly, slipped under, causing the screw to go out of parallel with the threading, and it split the cylinder housing where the threading is. It is just cast iron. The screw popped off along with bits of the threading and its casing. Not so much a feat of strength as a feat of dumbness.
Forgive all the typos in the previous post. Have a nasty paper cut right at the tip of a finger, and it really makes typing unpleasant.
Thanks.

I think I may go a different direction with the tiles.
On the left is a Moroccan pattern, on the right, your basic square tiles. I think the Moroccan pattern will end up as a better look for the exterior. Still debating some sort of windows over the doors, but I am leaning towards a no, since there will be balconies over the doorways. Maybe windows in the alcoves after all? Or no first floor windows?
And yeah, this first story is roughed out, so time to start on the second story. Or the doors.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hmmm, that sounds a bit... Ahem, indeed.
Stormwall, the faction I play in Infinity draws heavily from middle Eastern influences, and controls a desert world, so terrain built for it, I try to incorporate elements from these two things. Eventually, I'll move onto something else, but for now, I find that this sort of stuff is an interesting change of pace.
Theo, agreed, plus if it ends up as a bath house, ground level windows might be a bit of a
So,the Moroccan pattern with no windows it is. And now that I know they will fit, I experimented with the doors.
Doorway was too short (top photo), so I increased its height (bottom photo)

Also, thinking about tiling the portal
And the door itself, not sure about something. I wanted the doorway wide enough for those 25mm bases ( as required by the objective room) but I dislike overly wide doors, so I figured to make the door and frame removable, individually and as one piece.

But I am thinking that this is unecessary now. Affix the door to the frame and make it removable, or affix the frame, and make just the door removable? This is the last thing to decide before I move onto the next story of the building. Reduce it to just one piece that can be lifted out. (and how that will work with a second story... Ah, I've got a plan. This make it up as I go along stuff is fun )
'll build the other 3 doors, or maybe convert two of the doorways to alcoves of some sort... Hmmm... after that I get to the second story and roof. The rest of the tiling can be done after that. I just needed to see how it might look. Those pieces in the photos are just pressure fit into place, not glued. I need to remove them before I texture and paint the building. For neatness, and it is easier to do things that way.
Thanks for stopping by.
