How would you like 18 ini10, str5 Powerweaponattacks on a unit with 2+ invul save, that moves up to 24"?

Ok, Ill stop advertising and present you a possible unit of Space Wolve characters:

Rune Priest with Stormcaller, bike, 2+ save, Frostblade, Pistol, pelt.

+ Wolf

+ Wulf Guard Battle Leader, bike, 2+ save, Frostblade, Pistol, pelt.

+ Wulf Guard Battle Leader, bike, 2+ save, Frostblade, Pistol, pelt.

= 434 points

Its propably the hardest to avoid standing in the open after a successfull assault. Space Wolves have countercharge btw, so all ICs get into base contact even if they get charged.

Usefull or not?

Hello runepriest, meet my librarian and his psychic hood!

Can you have a unit of 3 IC?

Don´t think so. As far as I understand, an independent character can´t join another independent character and form a unit..?

Three Space Wolf HQ`s on a Bike are quite nasty though. I usually use two and attack small enemy units, those that usually take two turns to kill off... Best use of all those Space Wolf HQ´s if you ask me, putting them on a bike.

And yes, the Ld9 of the Rune Priest sucks big hairy balls...

Not normally, IC units are illegal. But, its based on the premise that the wolf makes the first IC into a unit which can then be joined by other ICs. I think its legal, but this is one of those instances where you are building a list around an "iffy" circumstance. I wouldn't suggest doing it.

Drop the wolf, keep the three ICs in close proximity, and have them do everything in tandem but as three seperate units. you don't lose much, and you gain invulnerability from target priority.

The hood is indeed annoying. It will stop half of the otherwise successfull Stormcallers.

I have used 3 individual bikers like you suggest loki. They perform decently. They just dont benefit from Stormcaller so well.

Is it really too iffy to use in games against strangers?

Instead of the Wolf I could use a 3 men Blood Claw biker unit. I lose the " Hey Im inviceble!" thing though.

Unequivocally YES.  I would not be to happy if you tried to pull that out and play it against me.   And do you really want to put up with an argument if said stranger calls you on it?

It looks legal to me. An IC with another model is no longer a lone independent character. I wouldn't have a problem with it.

It's going to annihiliate one unit. Then what? It sits there and gets eaten by plasmas, lascannons, and starcannons?

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Iffy or not: Till now my definition of "too iffy" has been, that something cant be explained with one sentence.

If someone wondered about the legality of the "biker council" id say:

Codex SW says that an IC with a Wolf become a unit, including all typical drawbacks of units like LD tests for casualties, and the main rule book says that a unit can be joined by multiple ICs, therefore the "biker council" is legal.

I have to admit with all these commata its borderline.

It gets annihilated, once it has won a combat. Its indeed a risk. On can try to attack units in a way, that some stay out of the killzone, which prolongs the comnbat into the opponents turn. Besides that one can try to assult different units at once and units that allow to consolidate into the next unit.
