Subject: Checkered pattern question!! (And another BA related question)

Right, so i'm starting a BA Drop Pod army, Lamenters, because I like them a lot, and am not particularly keen on red and lack the creativity to create my own chapter.
I'm actually starting with a squad of Death Company and a Drop Pod for them. They are the reason I wanted to start a BA army.
But I wanted to do the Lamenters checkered pattern, one on the Death Company shoulder pad, and also on those bits on the fins (?) of the Drop Pod, that are usually painted differently, silver or something). I was planning on priming the models black, because of the black armour. Should I just go white, so the the checkered pattern will be easier, and just have an extra coat of black for the armour?
Also, for my Assault (and Tacticals) Marines, I wanted the squad sergeant to stand out a little, and have considered either using the DA Veterans (cloaked guys) or Sanguinary Guard (minus the head and jump pack). Are either of those actually good ideas?

If its just shoulder pads and it hasn't been glued on yet, prime em separately with white.
otherwise prime black first, then mask off then repaint the one shoulder pad white.

lamenters are yellow. You will hang yourself, then soak yourself in lighter fluid, and then jump in a burning lake of rabid pirhanas with lasers for eyes if you prime black. Prime either white, or yellow, or orange.... just not black. you will regret it. Since I hopefully convinced you to not prime black, the rest is a non-issue. White is easy to paint over yellow, and black goes on everything. i painted some yellow-gray marines, starting with a black primer. That easily doubled the painting time I had to spend on those models.....

I'm priming the Death Company black, because they are black.
I was already planing on priming non death company models white. Just got the issue of checkered pattern, which contains white on the Death Company and their drop pod/s.

then what Desubot said. what you can do with the Drop-pod is tape off the areas you don't want black. Then just look around for a brush-on foundation/base coating for white. Failing that, Use some sort of an eggshell or creamy color, as once you build up all the layers, it will all be fine anyway.
