I hard once about how to get those weird flame looking line things on tyranid armor. People keep saying directional dry brush but I dont get it?

That does not work because it does this weird powder effect and looks nothing like it. I would really like to know how those are made! Like if there is a video or something that can really help me learn how to do that so I can use the same technique on non tyranid models because I do not have nids lol.

i would imagine this is what OP is talking about.

what you would do is use a very fine brush (or a brush that when SEMI dry has a splayed appearance) and start at the edges of the plates, and work your way toward the plate that overlaps it. i have been doing that on a tyrant guard, and i am very happy with the outcome.

i posted that note, because i know how the IP lawyers are, and i dont want them coming after my arse...

"I stand for the Emperor. In all things, I am loyal to Him, and I cannot break that bond. He has many great ambitions, and the noblest of intentions, but I know that above all else, He is determined to stand firm against the rise of Chaos. He has always known the truth of it. The overthrow of the Primordial Annihilator is His greatest wish. So what I do, autarch, from this moment on, I will do for the Emperor." -Alpharius, Primarch of the Alpha Legion.

Mine don't look that great, but I just basically did long lines, then shorter ones in a lighter color, then really short ones in an even lighter color. Only I did mine from the inside of the shell towards the edge rather than the other way around.

The technique is called feathering. Thin paint, applied in 'sketchy' strokes back toward the edge to be highlighted. Thinner paints and more layers gives a smoother, finer texture to the result.

I"m guessing what you\re talkng about is feathering. Easy to do, harder to explain.
