Hello Gents,
While researching up on some Heraldry on the interwebs, it occurred to me that I should probably pick up a book or two on the topic. So I'm wondering if anyone here has any recommendations on a good book or books on the topic. I'm interested in general stuff, as well as both English and German specifically.

cheers!

What period? My buddy has been doing WotR and HYW for the last few years and I can ask him for his references.

Uh, here's some shots of a game he ran between English and French units. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10201674929823475.1073741826.1486507703&type=1&l=dcdd4bf1d1

"...and special thanks to Judgedoug!" - Alessio Cavatore "Now you've gone too far Doug! ... Too far... " - Rick Priestley "I've decided that I'd rather not have you as a member of TMP." - Editor, The Miniatures Page "I'd rather put my testicles through a mangle than spend any time gaming with you." - Richard, TooFatLardies "We need a Doug Craig in every store." - Warlord Games "Thank you for being here, Judge Doug!" - Adam Troke

This one is a brilliant pocket survey of British heraldry.

It skims over the differences in continental heraldry.

The College of Arms has some online resources.

There are also some books free on Kindle that are probably worth a look, considering they are free.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Thanks for the tips guys - KK - Amazon UK doesn't want to know me, though I "bought" them on the US site instead. I'll sort out Kindle Reader for my PC later on. The book unfortunately doesn't seem to be available. I might take a gamble ordering one of the one-pence editions and paying 7 quid postage.

Doug, I'm looking for some books for both general nerd-study interest, and also so I can paint shields that are more or less technically correct on various Empire and Brettonian models, so I guess early-to-about 15th century, which is a pretty big chunk.

The main thing about painting correct shields is to know the rules of the colours, metals and furs, and the different kinds of charges and impalements, etc.

You won't want to make very complicated designs for the size of paint-able area you have to play with on a 28mm figure.

The science was fairly well developed by the 15th century -- Richard III established the College of Arms in 1483 (?).
