OK, I so I know that WP has the horribly-named Veer'Myn. Is there an analogue in KoW to use Ratmen (yes, I'm being lazy to go look it up - it's partly because I prefer discussion). I'm thinki ng of snagging another Island of Blood box to bump up my (Blood) Elves that I've decided to build (and finally paint all the old ones) as a primarily-KoW force, which will leave me with a bunch more skaven. And as I quite like those plastic skaven, I'm happy to have them anyway - I'll merge them with the other IOB set and the metals I kept when I sold my old force many years ago and the cool random skaven models I've picked up since then.

Not yet, but I suspect that there will be in the future.

If your group does not mind homebrew or unofficial lists then I am pretty sure that there is at least one fan created list on the Mantic forums, somewhere.

Going to recommend the new Ogre list as a possibility.
Field Rat Ogres as, er, Ogres.

Field Skaven as Red goblins.
If you need to field particularly wimpy Skaven (I'm not familiar with the) use the regular goblins rules as allies.

Regular goblins fail charges if they roll a '1'.
Red goblins (within the Ogre list) don't have that problem.

Honestly just use the Goblin list. Rat Ogres work well as Trolls, normal skaven as Goblin Rabble, stormvermin as Goblin Sharpsticks (extra attacks), giant rats and handlers as Mawbeast packs, and there's plenty of weird Goblin machines that could analog over to Skaven stuff - War-trombones, Sharpstick Throwers, Mincer, Sharpstick Slashers, etc.

Thanks guys. I'll sort out the details when (ha!) I get around to the pointy end of assembling and painting them, but it's good to know there are a few good analogues.

Yeah - just let me know when you're nearing working on it and I can help you come up with analogs and counts-as. I've used every army list in battle now so I have a good idea of the how effective unit types are in comparison to their stats in WHFB.

No worries. At the rate I work, it could be a year or two at the very least before I get stuck in properly. I'm surprised at how much Fantasy stuff I've had in boxes, actually... and Elves are my hotness of the moment.

What would you use Wardancers as? How about Animal Handlers/Beastmasters?

I wonder if I should mix my Dark Elf units in with the High Elves? Or use the same colour scheme, anyway?

I'm wondering, if Ogres want war machines etc do they have to take blocks of 20 red goblins?

wouldn't help; the Ogre list doesn't really have war machines so you'd have to ally them in, which would require getting a solid unit of the allied list for every war machine allied in.

Remember also that the Allies rules for KoW are pretty flexible. While you do have to have one solid unit to use allies, this usually isn't too hard.

For example, Werewolves are a solid unit in the undead army. It's a great profile to use for various large feral creatures and are available for anyone with an evil or neutral bent.

Warmachines can come via an undead or human army. There are a few different solid units in the Human army that could represent a Skaven unit (Zealots, Shieldwall and Militia come to mind) that would allow access to the multitude of war machines.

Did a quick Google for Ratmen and Kings of War - found THIS on War Seer.

Eyeballing it... it may be a bit over powered, but might be fun to play with.

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* Meanwhile, on The Miniatures Page Lead Adventures Miniatures has announced a 'Death Bell Cannon' - a cannon made from a bell. Manned my peasants, the bell itself is a separate piece, so could be used as a bit for a custom Screaming Bell or be used for a Mordheim scenario where the goal is the Bell.

For a Ratmen KoW army it might work well for the Hell Cannon or Pestilent Mortar. (I am thinking Church Bell stolen from a plague city....)

Wardancers - maybe Sylvan Kin perhaps. 20 attacks with only 10 models. Upgrade to a regiment (20 models) for the Nerve buff and get them out of the Wavering bell curve. Add the Crushing Strength +1or Melee +1 magic item to represent their crazy tattoos. As for beastmasters, take an Elf Prince with a Saber Toothed Pussycat. It's a one-shot thrown weapon with 5 attacks, pierce 1. For every damage caused, roll to attack again, and continue, until you cease rolling any damage. Sounds like a pack of wolves or beasts to me!

I'd keep your Dark Elves separate and make a Twilight Kin army! They have a different flavor than the Elf list.

Also fly over to the USA and we'll get some games in.

Thanks for the ideas for Wardancers. I'll have a couple of units worth when I eventually finish painting them all (ha!) and that's not counting the difference in unit base sizes. I saw the saber toothed pussycat in the list, and while I think it represents my actual cat at play pretty well, I'm not sure about it for the bear, boars and hunting hounds the beast master figures have. Also that one with the eagles once I get him painted.

I don't really have that many Dark Elves by comparison, and I'm not sure how to paint them. I know the High Elves will be using a rich red and gold, which could also work nicely for the DE rather than the usual blues and purples. - Which is why I considered combining them in..

Then I'd say give one unit the +1 Melee magic item representing one type of Wardancer fighting style/tattoos and the other unit the Crushing Strength 1 magic item representing a different type.

Honestly because Kings of War is unit-based all you really do is look at the stats and figure out what it matches with. For instance, bears/boards/hounds could just be a troop of Palace Guard with 10 attacks, 3+ melee and CS(1) and Speed 6. Fit the beastmaster and the beasts onto a 100x40 tray and there ya go!

It certainly wouldn't hurt to combine the different Elf styles - hell, it could be 2 or 3 different Elf nations with different styles combined into one army. Like a WHFB Empire army.

Hm, some good ideas there. As the paint starts to take shape, I'll ask for more advice here. I just need to manage to hold off the dreaded wargaming/painting ADHD and get something finished.

Another option is the pretty-well-playtested fan army list, specifically for Skaven:

http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?297863-Ratmen-list

Imagine the feeling when you position your tanks, engines idling, landing gear deployed for a low profile, with firing solutions along a key bottleneck. Then some fether lands a dreadnought behind them in a giant heat shielded coke can.

You know how I've beaten the painting ADHD? Multiple projects. Check it out. I get things assembled while I'm watching TV or something (the fiancee is usually watching Arrested Development, The Office, or Parks and Recreation for the 20th time). Then for painting, I've got two projects always happening simultaneously: My brother and myself and a couple gaming buddies have Wednesday nights set aside to get together and paint figs for a few hours and hang out. So I have a project that I always work on for our Wednesday evening sessions (currently English Civil War Parliamentarians). Then at home I have the second project (usually more complicated) that I slowly work on during the week (currently, my Red Box Games/Mierce Helsvakt Horde & Fomoraic Tarvax army). It's hard to get tired of one project when I can work on another shortly, and without the annoying cleanup for the project that is at home. Using this method I've gotten two large armies completed (my Orcs and my Goblins for KoW) along with multiple smaller things (AWI units, Fanticide warbands, Dreadball teams) in the past year and I'm halfway done with the ECW army.

My problem is too many projects. Armies, units, roleplaying models, interesting models, models I started months or years or decades ago, models I'm updating.. it's no so much losing interest as it is always having something new and shiny queuejumping to the front of the paint queue.

My painting table is only supposed to have whatever things I'm working on "right now". with about 9 figures in total but maybe an upper limit of about 20 figures including stuff being based to make sure I finish whatever I'm working on before starting something new. This is what it looks like right now...

Though, I do have an idea that might work to help out with the issue... PM incoming, Doug.

For dealing with my paints I use a cardstock arena from World Works games - the idea came from poster Sir Didymus on the World Works forums.

The set is called Arena Works, and it works a treat - build as many stands as you need - and it will hold Reaper, Vallejo, and GW paints.

I've got a pretty reasonable setup, that I've been putting together since before I moved to the new place.

The stepped rack on the table was custom made for me by a friend who is a sheet metal worker. The wall-mounted racks are nail polish racks, which I got from a local make-up wholesaler. The ones on the right hand side are for larger things, like compacts, etc, so they hold larger items like the MIG washes. The problem of sorts is that none of the paints shown in the other photo are in this photo. I've also got a full Vallejo Model Air case, some tubs withthe full range of Minitaire airbrush paints, and a plastic tub with.. I dunno? 1/3 of the new Citadel range (layers and base, a few washes only).

The other problem is that this is the rest of that room at the moment:

Spoiler:

Yeah, that wardrobe is full of boxed games.

Spoiler:

I'm slowly clearing up and converting the garage into a gaming room, so a lot of that stuff will be moving across. And I'll be adding some more bookshelves upstairs and moving all of the art books and non-current gaming books up there to be more of a reference library, but until that happens, it's kinda piled up. There's a lot more stuff elsewhere in the house as well.
