Hello, im new to the game and am honestly looking for an all infantry viable 500 point build.

IMPERIAL- these are my thoughts. criticism and advice appreciated!

HQ- basic command squad with auto cannon, or a commisar

TROOPS
-4x shock troop squads with autocannons and 2 flamers
-1x heavy weapons team with auto cannons
-1x heavy weapons squad mortars

This is not a legal list, as you need a platoon command squad to lead the platoon, and 2 seperate troops choices. The point you are spending on HWTs are better spent on more Platoon infantry at this level. Here is an example of a pure infantry list at 500 points:

Primaris psyker: 70

Platoon:
Platoon command squad, 4x flamer: 50
PIS, flamer: 55
PIS, flamer: 55
PIS, flamer: 55

Platoon-
PCS, 4x flamer: 50
PIS, Grenade launcher: 55
PIS, Grenade launcher: 55
PIS, Grenade launcher: 55

At 500 points it is very hard to build a list as you really are limited in terms of what you can fit in. However, Guard are better off than most armies here, so this list should be able to stand up to most just by volume of fire and ability to capture objectives.

also, ive heart HWTs are very squishy, but you dont imagine i could use any auto cannons inside of the squads themselves? would it be an outright bad choice to employ them? i wont lie, i think they look really cool as im using the older models

I would personally love to know where you got those heavy weapons teams from without having first taken the platoon.


if you need cheap fire-support, i would go so far as to replace the primaris psyker with a command squad with 4 grenade launchers, though that loses you your ability to kill heavy armor.

I remember being mocked at and scoffed when all i did was field grenade launchers. By turn 3 my space marine opponent was already trying to cheat to turn the game around...

another list might be:
primaris @ 70
vets @ 70
vets @ 70
leman russ @..... crap, i don't have my codex, what, 160?
and then just sink the rest of the points into trimmings. This is probably the one time it's possible to field a punisher, as the results should be hilarious.

So, you would say heavy weapons teams are not particularly worth it, are there circumstances where they are?

I ran into a crons list with 2 warrior squads with The Lord in 1 and a monolith. Make sure you have something to deal with av14.

I usually try to have a LRBT or a demolisher to be a fearsome unit.

You dont think lascannons would be a fair alternative?

They wouldnt be a bad idea for dropping heavy armor from a distance. But thats up to you what you decide. Some marine armies at low points will just try to get as many marines as they can and foot slodge across the board. Or you might play against a foot horde from orks. But at such low points its very hit or miss, its rather hard to cover all areas where guard is good at spamming units to cover different roles but in such low points you arent able to do that.
