Subject: I'm having a strange Issue with my Tamiya Primer

I seem to have come across an odd issue with my primer this weekend. I normally use a Tamiya white spray primer. I've had no issues with the stuff before, including on metal, resin, and plastic figures. In fact, I used this exact same can of spray primer an an Infinity figure (that I didn't wash) several weeks ago with absolutely no problems. This weekend however, I used it to prime two Infinity figures and some metal Eldar Fire Dragons. I'd given them plenty of time to dry and cure, but when I picked the figures to bring them in (I spray on my apartment's balcony) the primer came off on my fingers. The stuff wasn't wet or anything. Rather it came off as a dust. I've let them sit a full 24 hours since then and it's still coming off as a dust. As an experiment, I ran on of the eldar under a faucet and it just washed more than half of the primer right off of him. Whatever is going on, I'm sure it isn't because I didn't wash the figures first because the Infinity figures are using Micro Art bases that I DID wash beforehand and it's coming off of those, too. Does anyone know what the cause of this is?

My Brother had a weird issue with one of his priming jobs a while ago, he just stripped it and re-did it, anyways, when he was priming some marines, after they fully dried the primer looked clumped and chalky (is it similar to what you are having?) and he ran it under water and tried to wash it off, the chalkiness washed off but the clumps persisted. Anyway after trying to re-invent the problem he created, we found out he was holding the can sideways and that was somehow the problem for clumpiness and chalkiness.
there might be a few differences with your case and mine, but i hope that helps.

There wasn't any clumpiness, but I would describe the dust as being chalky. Odd though because I wasn't holding the can sideways that I can recall. I've tossed everything into the Simple Green to try and remove it.

Weird issue man, I've not heard of this happening before.
Only thing I can think of is that the can went bad somehow. Has it been stored outside (like in a closet off the balcony where its subject to temp swings and such?

Sometimes when I'm using my sprays, I might leave them outside a bit while the figure is drying, especially if I have to get the thing from another angle, but not this time. I store my paint in a cardboard box in my living room and I usually have that room's temperature pretty consistent.
