The Codexes are finally coming out for Android devices and I wanted to know if they were worth it? Personally, I like being able to hold one, but my bookshelf is getting full and I am liking the idea of having all of my codexes available on a single device? I've never looked through one on an iPad and wanted to get everyone's take on their usefulness and utlity.

The ones for the iPad are more interactive, which is a bit annoying for us Android users. I don't understand why we can't have interactive codices but what ever. I've found being able to put books on my tablet very useful. I've got my Necromunda and Gorka Morka on here, and being able to just pop often the tablet and have tons of info on hand is nice.

Does Android have a dedicated interactive eBook app? I'm genuinely asking, as I don't know.

worth? I think it depends on how you value your codex. If your mindset is resale value then ebooks have no worth. If you treat it as a one time thing like eating out then that might be some worth in it.

Think of the 5th edition SM ecodex, now that a new version is out will you still waste space on your ipad to store the old codex?

Well that's like saying "will you still waste space on your bookshelf to store the old codex."

Getting over the "resale" aspect was the hardest part for me. I still haven't been able to do with my blurays, but I really, really want to.

What resale value? Old codices are worthless, only RT era books hold any value. Even these ltd edition ones will be junk when 7th edition comes out and a new codex is released. I prefer a physical copy, but I wouldn't get hung up over the potential value of it.

Oh, completely agree. But potential resale value is something that people DO attribute to wanting a physical copy. I certainly used to.

Considering you can get crazy deals (up to 50% off) on iTunes cards I'd say so.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I like it for allied books, so books that are not going to get as much use, but I still feel the need to have purchased the rules for. For a main book I really like having the hardcopy. But then again I have no problem throwing away hard copies when I am done.

Depends on how you see "Value". I like having the older books, both as an item for collection, a source of fluff, and if I decide to use older rulesets for anything. I'm interested in seeing what the e-Codices are like, but just not too keen on paying what I would for a book (which I'll buy anyway) to find out.

The iPad versions are totally worth it. I've heard that the other versions are PDF files and that makes them less value than the iPad ones because PDF don't do automatic updates or interactivity. Regardless, being able to cart around one iPad instead of several books is awesome.

I have both the Eldar hardback and e-book.
The hardback is much easier at the gaming table, being able to prop it open at a particular page.

The ebook is handy for taking to look at at work or on the bus.
It's also easier to search through, but flicking through is a pain.

I would think having the e-book versions, particularly the iOS versions due to cost (Getting discount iTunes cards) and better features would be more of a value to someone doing a bunch of tournaments or with a greatly diversified, competitive local playing scene.

Being able to quickly do a search in your opponents codex for a unit or a keyword in a rule for a low cast is pretty valuable, without having to drag out a book and flip through, as well as having to transport all the codexes for the potential opponents you might face. It also cuts out some of the "Can I check your codex real quick?" "WHY?!?" moments I've had in the past with some people. I would personally always have a physical copy of my main army book though, just for the feeling of ownership.

My only concern would be TFG who breaks into the E-Dex and starts changing the Stats...so if your not intimately familiar with the Army you just accept that unit happens to be T5, 2W, 3++ save...because he showed you the Dex.

I spent an entire Saturday perusing my local big box electronics stores trying to decide which tablet I was going to breakdown and buy. When I got came home for a break, I started looking at the internet at the differences between iPad, Windows and Android tablets and content, and after seeing what options iPad had over the others, I went with the iPad even though I would have much preferred something else. Over the last week I have downloaded a bunch of stuff for my iPad, and I can say that I am very happy with the iBooks and apps that I now have. Having the WH40K rule book, Codexes and whatever else at my fingertips and not lugging a 50 lbs of books is pretty sweet! I would hope though that GW would make eBooks with as much functionality so that it wouldn't matter which format one would have.

The functionality doesn't come from games workshop, it comes from apple. They give out software for free to developers (or anyone who wants it) called iBook author, which makes it really easy for developers to put together interactive books in their proprietary format.

Until google come up with something similar, the android versions will be pretty static.
