RULES FOR WARHAMMER 40K TOURNAMENT

This event will be capped at 30 teams.

Rule Books:
The Warhammer 40,000 SIXTH Edition Rules will be used.

The following is a list of legal army choices:
Codex: Blood Angels
Codex: Chaos Daemons
Codex: Chaos Space Marines - Supplement allowed
Codex: Grey Knights
Codex: Dark Angels
Codex: Dark Eldar
Codex: Eldar - Supplements allowed
Codex: Imperial Guard
Codex: Necrons
Codex: Orks
Codex: Space Marines
Codex: Space Wolves
Codex: Tau Empire - Supplement allowed
Codex: Tyranids
Codex: Sisters of Battle (White Dwarf)

MODELS AND POINTS:

1. Each player must bring an army consisting of 1000 points or fewer (975 min), in accordance with these rules. Each team will consist of two players fighting together.

Each player must select one of the following Half Force Org Charts for this event. Players on a team may not select the same option twice. In the case of Troops, a team MAY NOT exceed 6 choices between them.

Allied detachments are NOT allowed in this event.

Option #1
• 1 HQ
• 0-1 Elites
• 2-4 Troops
• 0-1 Fast
• 0-1 Heavy
0-1 Fortification

Option #2
• 1 HQ
0-2 Elites
• 2-4 Troops
• 0-1 Fast
• 0-1 Heavy
• 0 Fortifications

Option #3
• 1 HQ
• 0-1 Elites
• 2-4 Troops
0-2 Fast
• 0-1 Heavy
• 0 Fortifications

Option #4
• 1 HQ
• 0-1 Elites
• 2-4 Troops
• 0-1 Fast
0-2 Heavy
• 0 Fortifications

Selected units that alter a Team Member’s Force Organization selections WILL affect all other detachments on the Team from the same codex. For example, a Space Marines Master of the Forge allows all detachments using Codex Space Marines to take Dreadnoughts, Venerable Dreadnoughts and Ironclad Dreadnoughts as Heavy Support choices as well as Elites choices.

All instances of Special/Unique/Named Characters must be unique. For example: a Team cannot field Abaddon the Despoiler twice. This also applies to upgrades to squads (e.g., Boss Snikrot, Sergeant Telion, the Changeling).

2. All models must follow “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG). All weapons, war gear, and so forth must be represented on the model unless otherwise approved (see number 3).

3. Pictures of conversions or "counts as" models must be emailed to the Tournament Organizer unless they have previously been approved. There is an expectation that your conversions or "counts as" models are "hobby quality." No "toys" will be allowed.

4. Allies of Convenience - For the purposes of this, team members are considered Allies of Convenience per the Warhammer 40,000 rule book with the following modifications:

Battle Brothers: Codices denoted as Battle Brothers per the Allies Matrix chart are considered Battle Brothers for this Doubles Event and follow all the relevant rules and restrictions per the rule book. Teams comprised of two detachments from the same codex are also considered Battle Brothers with the following clarifications:

-Wargear and Special Abilities will benefit/affect both detachments in a team. For example, Vulcan’s special ability twin-linking all melta would apply to any Salamander units from Codex: Space Marines, regardless of owner, so long as they're Battle Brothers.

-With respect to the new Codex: Space Marines; Chapter Tactics may not be shared between detachments of a different chapter. Example: Chase's Imperial Fists can not benefit from Sam's Iron Hands Chapter Tactics (and vice versa) even if we are on the same team.

-Wargear and Special Abilities that affect your team's detachments DO NOT stack, unless specifically allowed by an army Codex or FAQ (e.g., a Coalition containing two Eldar Autarchs with the Master Strategist special rule can add +1 or +2 to Reserve rolls).

5. Warlord Traits - Each team will nominate a single Warlord with the following modifications and clarifications:

-Your team's Warlord can be from either detachment, but is always the HQ choice character within that detachment with the highest Leadership. If several characters are tied for highest Leadership, you can choose among them as normal.

-At the start of each game, before deployment, select two tables. Roll a die for each table. Choose ONE of the two results as your Warlord Trait for that game.

-Per the rule book, Warlord Traits may only benefit Battle Brothers.

-If your team's Warlord is not on the table at the conclusion of a game (e.g., ongoing Reserves), that Warlord counts as being slain for the purposes of calculating Slay the Warlord.[/li][/list]

6. Psychic Powers - At the start of each game, prior to deployment, players may choose to select the psychic powers listed in their Codex as normal OR swap them for a number of rolls on the psychic disciplines tables per the Warhammer 40,000 rule book. Unless stated otherwise, you MAY NOT mix and match Codex and rule book powers.

7. Forge World / Imperial Armour units AND ARMY LISTS bearing the "40k Approved" stamp **ARE** allowed in this Doubles event.

Super Heavies, Super Heavy Flyers, Gargantuan Creatures, Apocalypse Formations, and Strategic Assets are not allowed.

Players MUST have a hard copy of all Forge World / Imperial Armour rules if they wish to field corresponding units / lists. NO EXCEPTIONS.

8. HQ units that require a certain point level to be fielded do not have to abide by that restriction.

9. We will require that each player submits his army list to a Battleground Tournament Organizer on or before Monday, September 30th (roughly a week before the event). We ask that players email their lists to ChaseLaq@gmail.com as soon as they are finalized. We are going to do our best to check every list before the event begins.

10. If illegal units or other rules violations are found in a player’s army list, at a minimum, the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. In addition, tournament points may be deducted and/or award eligibility may be forfeited. If in doubt, please ask for clarification in advance from a Battleground Tournament Organizer.

11. Restrictions:

• This event will not use "Mysterious Terrain" (p.102-103).
• This event will not use "Archotech Artefacts" (p 106).
• This event will not use "Unique Terrain" (p. 107).
• This event will not allow The Fortress of Redemption.

HOW THE TOURNAMENT WORKS:

• Competitors will participate in three (3) games over the course of the day. In each game, you will play a scenario and record the outcome of the battle on your results sheet. Each round you will play a different opponent.

• Each round will last 2.5 hours. Players will have 15 minutes after the pairings have been posted to deploy their models before time for the round begins. Players may begin playing as soon as they have finished deployment.

• In the first round, teams will be matched up randomly. After the first round, teams will be matched up according to current rankings in the tournament (based on the number of points they've scored) e.g., the team in first place will play the team in second place and so on. We will try our best not to pair teams that come to the event together or regularly play each other in the first round. If a team receives a BYE they will be awarded max points for all objectives but zero points for everything else.

• You will not play the same team twice.

• We will do our best to prevent a team from playing on the same table twice.

• The pairings for each round will be posted as soon as they are determined. Please be sure to arrive at your table ready to play right away.

• Slow playing will NOT be tolerated. Players are expected to complete at least 4 rounds. If you suspect your opponent is slow playing PLEASE notify a Battleground staff member as soon as possible as we can not do anything about alleged slow play after the fact.

• Each game will be played on a 4' x 6' board.

• Players will receive Results Sheets at the beginning of each round. Each results sheet must be filled in properly to ensure that match-ups and point totals are correct. Once Results Sheets are completed they are to be turned in at the counter so the scores can be entered into the computer.

BATTLES:

The SIXTH Edition Rulebook and all FAQs will be in use for all games and will be the definitive guide for all rules. The time limit for each game is 2 hours and 30 minutes. At the end of this time limit, the round will be called; players will need to finish the round as quickly as possible.

What You Need to Bring with You:
-Your (hopefully painted) miniatures
-At least THREE copies of your army list
-Rulebooks and any additional books you need
-Pen and paper
-Dice and templates
-Tape measure
-Something to transport your army from table to table

Store Credit Awards will be given out to:
Store credit is good for any product in the store and all subsequent events. It never expires and will be saved for you.

Best Generals
Second Best Generals
Third Best Generals
Fourth Best Generals (only awarded if the turnout is 26 teams or higher)

Best Appearance - Army (individual)
Second Best Appearance - Army (individual)
Third Best Appearance - Army (individual)

Players Choice - The Players Choice award will go to the team that the others feel best reflects important aspects of the hobby. Every team will score their opponents on sportsmanship, theme, appearance, and overall awesomeness. **This award will be significant.**

Smokin' Boots - You got crushed... and you deserve an award for your epic failure.

A team may only win one award. The Best Appearance awards may go to any one player participating in the event, regardless of their finish / other awards.

• A note on the Appearance award - We will award the individual who we feel has the best looking army. We will use a scoring rubric that looks at painting, basing, display boards, and various other "extras" to determine the winner.

Please post any questions or comments here. I'll do my best to get answers ASAP.

Frack these constant doubles tournaments. I understand you make double the money.. but the allies matrix is ignored every time and I can't get into these games. Your tables are the best around and people are attending so I guess you're doing something right. IMO the only fun events you guys do are the 500 point tournaments.

Ally matrix is not ignored actually but is adjusted so everyone can play with each other. And BG puts on high quality tournies regardless of points. Tables are great and the staff are great. Plus its been like 3 months since the last doubles tourny. gak they regularly get more players then I have seen some GT's get not to mention it pulls in big talent on the east coast like Bill Souza, Alex Fennel, Ragnar Anderson, and a few others.

BG has a great setup and has always come through with great tournies.. I cant wait till they pull the trigger on the a BG GT!!

I'm sorry you don't seem to have fun playing the game. It appears from your posts on Dakka that you have a lot of problems with 1k+ lists which might explain why you have (on multiple tournament posts for Battlegrounds) come in and expressed your dismay at non-500 point tournaments. I'm sure all of us who participate at BG on a regular basis and who attend national Grand Tournaments would be more than happy to help you on your path to being a better, more competitive player.

As Grimwulfe points out, the Allies Matrix is modified, and in fact is the same modification used at Adepticon, NOVA, and other national Grand Tournaments, so I am confused as to why you think that the matrix is ignored. Perhaps it offends your tendencies towards playing a fluff game and while admirable, most FLGS tournaments do not cater to restrictions because they want to include as many community members as possible. The Battlegrounds staff are passionate about the game, they are passionate about the community and in fact go out of their way to help us out anyway they can. Not only do they bend over backwards to get us the toys we all cherish, but they actively participate on the forums and listen and respond to our feedback.

As you say, they must be doing something right if their tournaments are consistently capped out with players and we get participants from both in and out-of-state (we've even had people drive in from New York and Pennsylvania to play). If you are unhappy with the current state of tournaments at the store, then by all means post it on their forums and I am sure that the staff and the community would be more than happy to have a meaningful discussion about it.

But please do not come to a forum such as this and post such things as you have, when the staff (and by extension those of us that play there) are trying to create a more inclusive community and keep the hobby that we all love active.

Because you are clearly in the minority here (in my five years of playing there I have never, ever heard of a person not having an enjoyable time [even those that don't win a game]) and it serves nothing but to poison the stores efforts when they have done no disservice to you at all.

0000 - Rest Period - BUT YOU BETTER NOT SPEND FOUR WHOLE HOURS SLEEPING. IF YOU DO YOU ARE NOT ANGRY ENOUGH AND TOMORROW YOU GET THE FIRST CHANCE TO PLAY PIN THE TAU ON THE CARNIFEX.

Come on man! My derision is aimed only at their constant doubles events. When have they ever hosted a campaign event? or an apocalypse event? I don't know of any. But I bet they would still be profitable and fun. They do the same exact thing every month. I find it no coincidence that they command the highest entry fee around, and their tournaments are always doubles. I know, and openly admit, they have the best tables, and staff around. I know that I am the minority opinion, but I'm a customer too so why cant I voice my opinion? Which is all it is... one persons opinion.

Well, Battleground has two stores and since Apocolypse has come out, they have had a Mega Battle every year. They also are running a campaign in Abington as we speak, so they are doing that as well. They have their own set of forums and post these sorts of events on them regularly. Take a look at their website and view the forums and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Haven't they had 3 non doubles events between the last doubles tournament and this one?

I'll touch base on this one. BG runs a very large sometimes 40+ people Apoc event every year. The people who play Apoc love this event and also find that it takes several months to prepare properly for such an event. To do Apoc regulary just woudlnt work since apoc players are in the minority.

Campaign event you say. Actually there was a campain in Plainsville like 6 months ago that failed because no one showed up so the incentive to start another really isnt there. HOWEVER if you are looking for a campaign event there is actually one going on right now at the Abington Battlegrounds which isnt to far from Plainsville. The community there tends to enjoy campaigns and such much more and it has been going strong for a few months now. I would suggest if that type of game interests you then check it out. You can find information on the BG forums for this.

Now for your comment that they always do doubles this is plainly incorrect. I will demonstrate
Jan - Singles 500pt
Feb - Doubles Event
March - Fantasy Escalation League
April - Singles 2000pt
May - Singles 500pt
June - Doubles Event
July - Singles 1850pt
August - Singles NOVA event (canceled due to lack of players) - Warmachine Escalation League
September - BG Bitz Bonanza (No Tourny)
October - Doubles Event

So as you can plainly see normal single events outnumber the double events. Out of 10 months this comming one is only the 3rd doubles. But I digress let us remain on the topic of this thread and promote the tournies they are having. Doubles events are popular at this site due to the player meta and peoples interest. You yourself have stated that are top notch just not doing what you want. But as you can see what you want actually is being done at the Abington Site and Plainsville site.

We are lucky to have Battlegrounds which has 2 fairly close sites that are BOTH VERY ACTIVE in the community, alot of places dont have this type of FLGS so I consider our area to be blessed. Now if you would like to see a certain tourny all you need to do is bring it up to the BG staff they have always been forthcoming and helpful in terms of giving the people what they want. So I would duggest instead of posting here whining about lack of certain events come to the BG forums and state your case I am sure Chase and crew are more then willing to listen and consider your ideas.

Now I am very stoked for this doubles as team events are by far my favorite type of event. I cant wait to game with all the people of I have met and will meet. See you guys there!!

Whoa, I came here to check if anyone had any questions and had plenty to read.

6^ I agree with a lot of what you're saying and where you're coming from. My two favorite events are the 500 point tournaments and the Trios tournaments.

I like the 500 pointers because they're fast, fun, have an entirely different metagame, have 5 rounds, have 8 winners, have brackets, and have a TON of casual appeal. They're different, uncommon, and cool. We want to keep all of these things true.

The Trios events are amazing and different as well. I like them because they ask players to play what boils down to 3 entirely different games that feed into their team's overall ranking in the event. Each player takes a 2000 point list and a 1000 point list. They use the 2000 point list in a 1v1 and the 1000 point list in two different 2v2s. We haven't run a Trios event in 2013 for a very simple reason; It's difficult for people to get a team of 3 together. There's several obvious and non-obvious reasons why Trios are difficult to execute, but I've gone on long enough.

Personally, I'd love to host more events with causal appeal. I am ABSOLUTELY open to suggestions and encourage you (or anyone) to send them our way.

A couple of people have mentioned our store's message board. That's where a lot of the smaller, casual things get posted (leagues, game days, TANKSgiving type events, Apocalypse games, etc). Here on Dakka I pretty much only use the "Tournament Discussion" forum to... well... post up tournaments .

So, October 5th we're running 40k Doubles in Plainville.

I'm probably going to run a 1250 point "Power Armor Only" event on October 19th in Plainville also. I have yet to hammer out the final details, but the idea here is to let people play their new Space Marines in a casual, goofy tournament setting.

Early November will offer up another 1850 point Singles to get the guys ready for DaBoyz GT in NY.

Late November (while the guys are away at DaBoyz GT in NY) I'll likely do some sort of small event. Maybe a 1500 pointer like we did while people were away at NOVA. Maybe I'll do an Apocalypse event. Maybe 500, but I doubt it seeing as how they're much better with a full 32 people.

Late Novemeber will also offer TANKSgiving, like we do every year. It's awesome, free, and we give away a free tank.

At some point between now and the end of the year we'll likely do our "40k Walker Race" which is still in development. A "Monster Mash" might show up around Halloween. A 40k arena event needs to happen. We still haven't set up any 40k dog fighting things yet.

December is always an awkward month, but perhaps we'll give 500 points a shot then. Maybe not.

January will likely be Doubles again coinciding with the Ork / IG release. Abington will also host it's annual Apocalypse Megabattle.

Plainville is seriously overdue for a league. The Abington guys started a long league just as we began to flesh one out for Plainville. We may give one a go in March, after we have both IG and Orks (if rumors are true).

Abington will also run at least one 40k tournament before the end of the year. Possibly in November.

The criticism is fair, although it's probably not entirely accurate. We do lots of smaller 40k stuff over the course of the year. A very large percentage of it doesn't get posted on Dakka.

If I had more time to dedicate solely to 40k we'd run tons of stuff all the time, that's for sure... Although saturation is an issue.

Anyhow, based on my inbox and the Facebook event there seems to be a very high level of interest in this doubles event we've got coming up. At least 1 team from Montreal is heading down, which is always awesome.

Definitely visit our message boards if you're interested in some of the small, casual, non-tournament events.

Hey folks,

So I was thinking about checking this one out since I have to visit my friend and his new baby up in Springfield anyway. Driving up from NYC but unfortunately I don't think any of the guys here are interested in taking a road trip for a single day of doubles with an overnight stop that includes babysitting lol!

If there is another active tourney-goer that doesn't yet have a partner I'd be interested in getting a team together for this. I run Tau.

If not, will see you guys at BFS and Mechanicon at the very least, perhaps even Daboyz if I can talk the other mongers into an adventure in the frozen north

PM me here if so.
