hi guys

Having a bit a trouble how to start my IG army for fluff reasons but also want to make it vaguely competitive

I want to build my IG army around my sisters of battle allies detachement, the idea behind it that the entire army is a protection force for the living saint.Celstine
My mini sisters of battle army consists of 2 melta sisters in rhinos with a sephraphim squad and St cestline

I have taken inspiration from real life examples such as the pope's swiss guard which in my opinion is a mix between praetorian/ warhammer empire fantasy range minatures but I really can't decide who

The second is what list to run, obviously with such a mobile sisters detachment it would be good to have a mech guard to further enhance the effectiveness of the army, however it would also create some interesting synergies if I tired using gunline guard.

Many thanks in advance!

HEY
start with a CCS and a lord commissar
then 30 guardsmen in 1 big squad
then heavy wep team
then LMBT
then 10 stormtroopers in a chimera
then 30 guardsmen
then LMBT

that should give you:numbers firebase and leadership and heavy stuff and light stuff

hope this helps.

Another option, is to take 2 vet squads in chimera, and a CCS in a chimera. Just load them up with all the melta they can carry.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

My starter was

CCS
around 30 gaurdsmen off ebay,
two snipers,
a basilisk from a friend,
stormtroopers,
chimera.

I then also later brought a valkyrie.

Assuming the SoB will be the allies:

Lord Commissar

Vets, 3x melta or 3x plasma

PCS, 4x flamer
Infantry squad, melta + LC
Infantry squad, melta + LC

Vendetta
Vendetta

{appropriate heavy support of your choice}

The infantry squads (with the commissar attached) act like proper meatshields and objective campers (MARTYRDOM FOR THE EMPEROR!), while the PCS and vets go in the Vendettas and drop onto objectives late in the game.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

So before I say anything else I want to say that I think Stormtroopers are not a good choice if you already have Sisters--they tend to get used as a suicidal melta deliver system (via re-rollable scatter Deepstrike), and your Sisters probably pack enough melta as is (and they'll survive longer). Any other uses for Stormtroopers tend to not be efficient for the price you pay for them, and more guardsmen/vets are pretty much always a better option. That being said if you decide you *really* like the models then go for 'em.

For the HQ I would either go with a Company Command Squad (likely packing plasma guns and riding in a Chimera) or a Primaris Psyker. For the troops you can take a ton of foot hordes, a few elite units of vets (probably with plasma guns) in chimeras, or dabble in both.

If going with a horde then a 30-man 'blob squad' with a commissar attached is wonderful. I recommend just using a normal commissar upgrade for the platoon. Don't bother with the Lord Commissar (too expensive and if the unit gets in melee he can be targeted and killed by most things fairly easily--and then the squad will lose his buffs and be *very* likely to flee from combat and get swept). I would also recommend not putting Heavy Weapon Teams in your blob squads--the 6th edition wound allocation rules mean that you'll need to place them in the back of the unit to keep them safe, which often makes drawing clear lines of fire from the teams to the enemy difficult. They're also on big, awkward bases which can greatly impair a squad's ability to move--and with the weapons being heavy that means you lose a lot of effectiveness with your firepower when the squad needs to move.

Vets in Chimeras are pretty straightforward. The vet squad gets three special weapons (usually 3 meltaguns or 3 plasguns) which they can fire out of the Chimera's impressive 5 fire points. The Chimera itself has a nice three-shot S6 Multilaser. It's not the *best* weapon in the army by any means, but multiple Chimeras concentrating fire on a light/medium vehicle can and will strip its hull points away. I tend to prefer taking a Heavy Flamer on the vehicle's hull as well--it's handy if there are a lot of enemies getting close (I had a game a few days ago where I used turret-less Chimera to rampage through some CSM...that hull HF can be pretty damn good).

For Heavy Support you can't go wrong with a Leman Russ variant--chose a tank that compliments the rest of the army and fills in any holes you have in your firepower. As for Fast Attack the Vendetta is one of the best flyers around. I'm very partial to Hellhounds, however (despite not being as good as Vendettas), which can make for a great cover-ignoring rush unit. Scout Sentinels (with Multilasers or Autocannons) also provide a cheap way to get some Outflanking shenanigans into your army (I've started running a squadron of 2 sentinels w/ Autocannons which Outflank in an attempt to get those lovely side/rear-armour shots against enemy vehicles).
