I really don't have a lot of experience but I'll add my meager thoughts.

I'd remove the cultists all together and put those points elsewhere. I would only suggest the cultists if you were using them as a meat shield while you advance your marines into CC, otherwise I don't think you're going to get your value out of them. I would suggest you either double the number of cultists and charge across the board in two giant blobs with your CSM close behind and engage in CC or die trying, or remove them and put the points towards something else..

The cultists are only there for objective purposes - the ranged ones sit on the home objective, the cc-ones run from cover to cover and hopefully take another objective.

My Lord and Chosen are there to escort them, while the Defiler's AP3 pie plate keep the enemy in check.

Then I have the 8 S8 shots of the Forgefiend to deal with Armor from range, while the Hellbrute is a midfielder also accompanying the cc-cultists and stopping any vehicle that gets too close.

Since the Forgefiend and Defiler are Daemons with IWND, they can take a lot of punishment.

One thing I will say is change the Havoc Launcher on the Defiler. Because the Battle cannon is an Ordinance weapon, you can only fire your other guns on snap shot, as the Havoc Launcher is a blast weapon you can't snapshot with it. Thus it is a waste of points, unless you happen to lose or do not fire unlikely.

okay thanks. I was thinking about dropping the havoc launcher, the meltabombs on my Lord, the meltabombs on my chosen champion, and remove the mark of tzeentch on my assault cultists, giving me 25 points to spare. now I just need a further 10 points for that chaos rhino.

bear in mind that the chosen are wysiwyg...if you can help me shave off equipment that isnt represented on the model and also not really worth it, that would be great.

Hopefully your opponent doesnt know the stats on the murder sword because if so he will avoid it at all costs. Youre better off using axe of blind fury

Great to see someone start a Chaos army!

Having started almost the same way, here are some of my thoughts:

- The Chosen , in theory pack a good amount of punch against most things once they get into close combat. Unfortunately this is usually quite obvious to your opponent and he will start shooting them to bits before they do arrive.
My advice would be to put them in some kind of transport and more importantly add a few more marines without special weapons to soak up the inevitable casualties the squad will sustain.

- Your opponent will know, what the murder sword does. Either he will also be a beginning player in which case it is only fair to tell each other about the special rules in your armies, or he will have more experience and will know of his own accord. In either case, people are rightfully terrified of the Murder sword and will either constantly run away from it or focus fire it to death, wasting your precious points.
Your Murder Sword definitely needs a way to get around fast, be it via reliable transport (and that's not a Rhino!), jetpack or bike.

- Each of your machines of war is a fine choice on its own. Bear in mind however, that all of them are AV12, which can be taken down by a single lucky hit with a missile launcher or similar. If you are looking for heavy weapons, you might consider replacing one of them with Havocs , who will get more heavy weapons for less points or a Predator, which is slightly more durable.

- Try to have some units that pose enough of a threat to be worth shooting at, yet can take a bit of a beating. Simple Chaos Space Marines with maybe a special weapon or two are great for this. Remember that your opponent will be killing your troops as well, so make sure you have something that you won't mind losing too much.

- By all means keep those cultists. They are cheap and annoying. You've got exactly the right idea on how to use them. They will do something useful in most games.

Having said all that, (and I do hope this wasn't to harsh) you have a fun starter army. Just find a few like-minded players and have a go. The best way to find out what works and what doesn't is to just start playing and having a blast.

Glory to the Dark Gods!

CHAOS, yes! Lets look at each unit.

Chaos Lord: Murder sword is fun and all, but it makes the lord very focused in his task. This can be good if the enemy has a very high point CC HQ, because you can control their movement by positioning your lord wherever you dont want him to be. Dont take GoM.

Chosen: Chosen are unfortunately just one of those units. I dont think anyone has found something they do better than someone else. Id get rid of them

Cultists: DO NOT GET RID OF THEM. Cultists are very important. Take them naked and make them at least size 15. The larger they are the more wounds they have and the harder it is for them to take a leadership test. Those are much more important than the upgrades they can get. Maybe take the shotgun upgrade on the champion, take a flamer or two if you really want to, but thats as far as upgrades should generally go on cultists.

Helbrute: Good unit for 1000 point and less games. Can pop light-medium vehicles and kill HQs in CC. If you build your army any larger get rid of him.

Defiler: Much too expensive for what it does. If you want pie-plate goodness, take 2 vindicators. CSM Heavy Support needs redundancy. Take 2 of whatever you get, and if you want more Heavy Support, take a squad of havocs or 3 oblits.

Forgefiend: yes, take the hades autocannons, but you dont just want one. take two or take none. up to you

So you seem to want a Khorne list. I love it. Khorne seems to do the best with just your simple charge tactic with lots of fire support to take out anything that can pop your transports. May I suggest a 1000 point list?
