So, you guys, have you bought any miniatures from recasting sites or people who re-model miniatures,
How was it(the quality), what's the bang for the buck ratio, shipping, any problemes etc.etc?

also what should a first time buyer be aware of?

Thanks for all the replies!

P.S. If it makes any difference I am mostly interested in robust models such as IG tanks, Dreanight or two and paladins.

I'm not sure if it's really kosher to talk about that here. It is copyright infringement after all.

Don't bother. There is plenty of third party stuff out there waiting for you.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Well, considering the fact that China and Russia copyright laws are pretty much different from UK`s(basically GW can only sue respective governments not firms), so biggy in that department?

I'm buy a lot of stuff from a Chinese Recaster.

I shall not share the name as that's just wrong.

The Quality is good. Perfectly Detailed and half the FW prices.

But Brittle.

It's probably a kosher subject as long as no links are posted and no companies are named.

I have never bought recasts and probably never will. Not because of delicate morals though. I just don't want to order things from China.

Yeah. Not kosher. I've triangled it as such.

Not true. The Laws are not different, the mechanisms for enforcing them are super hard to navigate. You imply what they are doing is legal in those countries and that is not at all true as they both basically replicate and follow WIPO. It is not 'LEGAL' in Russia or china... it is just harder to bring up a copyright complaint and take someone to civil court over it due to most of the people being infringed upon are outside the country.

Honestly no matter what you think about the price that GW or your local hobby store charge you for the models recasting is never a good idea. All you do is sap money from the honest company and infrastructure (your local stores) which suffers as a result.

If you want to get models cheaper consider:

1) Using alternate models from other franchises - barring tournament games this should be fine at most clubs so long as the models look like what they are supposed to be standing in for

2) Ebay - buy second hand and learn to strip paint and be patient. There are always people giving up armies or selling off unbuilt stuff.

In the end recasting only harms the industry so don't support it.

As others have pointed out, third party is a better option than recasters.

Kromlech, Victoria, Mantic, Avatars of War, Puppet War, Chapterhouse Studios, and many others are a better option - your money helps companies produce more material.

Not wanting to support GW? That is fine, and a laudable goal.

But supporting companies that you do respect goes further to making a point with GW than buying counterfeits.

Dakkdakka does not, and can not, endorse the promotion of counterfeit miniatures.

Moving on.
