    Update: 10-FEB-2014

Per the announcement on their forum:

The public beta for Wave 2 is over and all of the cards are available for free download from our site! Wave 2 includes models from Rising Powers, Twisting Fates, and Storm of Shadows. So, if you were unable to find rules for your favorite models in the second edition book, they'll be available here.

These PDFs are final, official, and tournament legal. They are only missing the art, and arsenal decks will be on their way for wave 2 later this year. The only models missing from wave 2 are the avatars, and an open beta test for the avatars is starting this week!

    http://wyrd-games.net/community/files/file/53-malifaux-wave-2-cards-low-rez/

    Update: 04-FEB-2014

Justin has released a preview image for the new Arcanist master Ironsides on a blog post:

    http://justindrawingdead.com/?p=264

Also, the Malifaux offical tournament rules, Gaining Grounds 1.0, have been posted and include art for the new Arcanist model The Captain.

    http://wyrd-games.net/community/files/file/52-gaining-grounds/

    Update: 06-JAN-2014

January Malifaux FAQ & Errata are posted as well as downloadable cards for Samael Hopkins and Francisco.

    http://www.malifaux.com/M2eRules.php

    Update: 16-DEC-2013

I'm not sure if everyone is keeping up with the Wave 2 play testing results, but Justin confirmed last week that all of the official rules for the Wave 2 models they've been testing so far will be available for free via PDF on February 10th. The physical cards will be delayed, but at least the official rules will be available. Also, following the release of the PDF they'll start work on the avatar playtesting.

    Per Justin:

Unfortunately, it's looking like it is going to take a bit longer to get all of the art for this wave of models than we had hoped, so we are looking to release arsenal decks in mid 2014 sometime before Gen Con.

The nice thing is that this gives the playtesting process some breathing room. So, here is the plan:

-This round of playtesting will last until the third week in January. January 24th will officially be the last day of this round of playtesting and on that day these forums will be taken down.

-I Will then spend two weeks proofreading, doing some internal playtesting, and generally finishing up any design which these models need.

-On Monday February 10th, we will release free PDFs of all of the models/upgrades from this wave for download. These will be the finalized, set in stone rules. They will be tournament legal. However, these cards will contain no art.

-On Tuesday February 11th, we will launch the next wave of playtesting which will include the avatars for every master and at least one new generic upgrade for each faction.

-This third wave of Playtesting will last until the end of April.

Once all of the art is in, we will send everything off to print and have the wave 2 arsenal decks as soon as possible.

Given the way Wyrd releases their models, that's likely to hit very close to the end of the month, so it might be JUST before Christmas or right after Christmas.

Nathan Caroland commented on the Wyrd forums that it is a large detailed model.

"Fahatsu - that is three figures and quite a bit of work sculpting and mold wise. It's also a Rare 1 figure. It gets sold once to a potential customer - not multiple times as say perhaps Bells or even Death Marshals. Pricing does come into affect for that - it has to."

That's some GW level gouging and price rationale then. How many dark debts boxes is someone going to buy? That's 5 figures there, with multiple part options.

Some people were making similar comments On the Wyrd forum. We don't know how big it is or what it actually looks like, so till that happens I don't want to judge.

Keep in mind something like the Hoffman avatar is one model and is $45. It's really big and detailed. The Rail Golem is $35 and it's a big model too. I would guess that at $40 Fuhatsu will also be pretty big. Being a one model henchman as opposed to a whole crew they probably plan to sell less of them and had to adjust the price to factor that in as well.

I also think all of those models are generally overpriced. The rail golem isnt THAT big. Certainly no bigger than an entire plastic crew box, which has more parts, sculpting, etc. Yan-Lo's box, Misaki's box, etc are all the same price.

The whole "charging more because its rare" is GW pricing model. We screw you on character models. So can we expect to start paying $20 for a single 30mm based mini just because its rare 1? They've never done this before, so it just makes it unsavory now.

Oh well, glad I cleaned house on Miniature Market's 50% off sale. But I do need some Terror Tots. I loathe the metal sculpt.

It makes sense for GW and it makes sense for Wyrd. Plastic models costs are by and large a huge cost when the sculpt is made. You have to estimate how many copies you'll sell, then split that huge upfront cost among models to get a decent return on investment. Metal models by comparison have much more per item cost, so less estimating (aside from burying in risk of materials raising in cost).

Best of luck with that. I'm finally working on moving some of my excess crews/minions, and even in a city the size of Toronto, I've had very few nibbles.

Basically selling off half of the Guild and thus far only a third of what I had for sale has actually gotten snagged up. I'm keeping 3 of my crews, particularly those I enjoyed painting and playing, and waver on a fourth, but while I'm not washing my hands entirely of the company and game, the last time I played was at least a few months ago.

Hopefully getting my Dwarven Forge terrain in and/or Through the Breach (... which is a story unto itself) in eventually will reignite some interest.

I'm in the opposite boat. I'm looking to get MORE Malifaux stuff. If I had any spare cash I'd totally make some offers. I've been wanting to play Malifaux since 2009 and got the rulebook that Christmas and I've had a crew painted since 2011, but with kids, home renovations and work it just hasn't happened yet. I'm hoping that with M2E I will finally get a chance to play.

I'm not aware of any players in my area right now, so I may have to start from scratch, but I'm hopeful at least!

I haven't been able to move a single Malifaux model since Version 2 hit. It absolutely killed our local community, going from maybe 15-20 players down to maybe 4, two of which are Henchmen.

Its a damn shame, the wife and I liked the core of what was already there. A revision could've made it even better, but as it stands, most people just feel gouged.

Oh well... replaced the game budget with Warmachine, and haven't looked back.

I'd imagine losing 2/3 of available models for a time. The roll out isn't really complete yet so unless you have a wave 1 master and crew, you cant even play.

    Personally?

The cut of their jib, and the treatment of the RPG project has really set me off and shown their true colors. They are using the funding of the RPG project for everything else then the RPG.
Thyer treatement of the project is reprehensible and out of line.

    Board? Hostility at every turn.

The changes in 2.0 are lame and done without thought, then the way in which they were jammed down the publics throat, they don't care.

Now all they want to do is shill models and feth the rest.

I have other things that need more time then something that came out strong then fethed the fan base in a faster carbon copy version of GW business antics.

I hate it when companies use the army list/stats to determine pricing.

If they put out a great model at a decent price, many players might buy multiples to convert or try new paint schemes, and non fans might buy them for other projects. But not when they are GW expensive.

Yeah, as the above posts said, Wyrd really treated fans like hot garbage running off all but their most obsessed followers.

Things like running an "open beta" and ignoring or actually being belligerant to folks offering feedback, showed their colors. From there they just went and rebalanced their game in the laziest way ever, that happened to also force players to rebuy books, buy card-packs for all their old models, etc...

Wyrd is a gakky, greedy company, and they happily threw their game and fans under a bus to spike some revenue in the very short run.

So yes, very GW of a practice, but unlike GW their game isn't entrenched enough for anyone to care, and as such, at least locally, they completely killed a growing community.

    Well yes and no.

Yes because they didn't handle new masters and factions in the best way, there was a lot of overlay and different rules. Cards were packed to the brim with text, and it felt very patchwork at times (stuff like the multifaction masters).

No because it was still a fun game to play and wasn't really getting stagnant (mainly due to how gameplay functioned).

EDIT: basic summary - was kinda needed, but they were far too heavy handed in their approach.

And their approach to the beta test was... less than optimal?

Just seems strange. It's Mack Martin running this (or part of this game) right? He's a good guy, and he's one of the reasons I write for FFG these days, so it seems odd that he'd disregard feedback.

Wow, seriously? I saw some minor complaints or lukewarm comments about 2nd edition elsewhere and assumed it was just normal grumbling and resistance to change. Have they really fallen from grace that quick? People don't seem to be too fond of some of their new plastic models, though.

Mack was hired as a Lead RPG writer, and as you or anyone else that writes for a living could probably tell that priorities shift, responsibilities change, and projects get moved. When Through the Breach's Kickstarter came out, Mack was touted as being the designer for that, and that alone. He would be on the RPG and it would leave Eric and Justin to be in charge of Malifaux development (either for a new expansion or new edition). As the summer approached, communication with Through the Breach was pretty consistent. up through April. And then we don't hear anything from April 5th until July 3rd. The July 3rd update was this:
Update #38 wrote:We're happy to say that the Train is on track; the artwork, writing, editing, and development are all in motion and coming along beautifully. We invite you once more to join the Through the Breach forum (REDACTED) to hitch a ride on playtesting and keep a weather eye on all the latest as we journey towards the completed RPG!

We'll be putting on steam in the coming weeks and releasing updates on here regularly, so stay tuned. Your conductor, Mack Martin, will have a special treat for you next week!

We got our special treat 2 weeks later, it was a special pdf on the inhabitants of Malifaux (not bad, it was a week late, but no big worries). By this point the Open Beta has been going on for a month and people have pretty much decided if they like the changes or not. My entire play group decided 2nd edition was not for them, I had been getting burned out on Malifaux and it was tough to stay positive about a company that I didn't know if I really wanted to support them as a Henchman, so I resigned and wished them the best of luck. My store has not played Malifaux since mid June because of the changes coming to the game. As a whole we thought the game was fine where it was, and were excited for "Book 5". On July 3rd, the same day that the Wyrd team said the Train is on track, Mack Martin posted this:
Miggidy Mack wrote:I don't think we'll have it at GenCon. At least, I'm not trying to get it there (I was looking at a late august/early sept "off to the printers" date).

If some things really fall into line I...

This is the first sign that backers have that things aren't quite going as smoothly as anticipated. The kickstarter was supposed to be fulfilled in September 2013. This seemed reasonable, and even with Mack's projected date of shipping to the printers in early September, this could mean that fulfillment would start late September.

On August 22nd, a few short days after GenCon, Mack says that on the 4th of September a backers beta will start for Through the Breach. So there goes any chance of people getting their stuff in October. Now communication has 'picked up' for Through the Breach with weekly emails coming out announcing a new set of playtest rules for backers to test. Often times these announcements are days after the playtest files are updated, and half of the week-long period has gone by. The Wyrd team then announces on September 10th that they will delay the fulfillment of Kickstarter rewards to provide a more complete product. Which is great I'd rather get my stuff complete, but I then look back to the quiet summer months wondering wtf they were doing if they weren't working on Through the Breach and it goes back to Malifaux 2nd Edition. Mack was hired to be their lead RPG designer, but he got pulled into M2E development. What this means is that Mack was pulling double duty having to work on both games at the same time, so I'm assuming the quality of 1 project suffered over the quality of the other. With Through the Breach being an expansion product, I assumed Mack's efforts went into M2E and Through the Breach was put on the back burner.

Now as to the communication with M2E, there was some back and forth with a prominent henchman or two and Wyrd didn't handle it all that gracefully, and the henchman in question could have probably done some things differently as well, but I think Wyrd came out a little bit worse in that situation, as there were some quotes from the higher ups in Wyrd that made it seem that they were not willing to take feedback from this former henchman, who had basically been one of the go people when Malifaux was testing things that were still in Alpha for upcoming releases. So sadly, in my experiences Wyrd has been dropping the communication ball recently, and Nathan's comments here are expected (because it doesn't make good business sense to sell a model for 20 dollars when it would mean that you would need to sell double the number of those models to a population of people that may only need half of that number.

Eh... there's a lot of grumbling, you might have heard some of the grumblings if you follow the Gamers Lounge podcast.

But from my view as one of their obsessed followers, M2E changed a lot of the game, and it didn't feel the same. Many of the changes (to me) felt as though they were simply being changed just to change them. Soulstones got flipped turned upside down, they added upgrades (it seems odd to have a character driven game when most people look at characters in games knowing that they have set abilities), and as some people said, if you didn't play a Wave 1 master, you were SoL for several months (Wave 2 beta started within the past 2 weeks). The Arsenal cards (updated stat card packs for M2E) were a good idea, and I was okay with that, but the game different enough from its first edition counterpart that I couldn't just get the updated cards and keep playing Malifaux, I had to get the latest book. Which I understand from a business point of view, but it sucked that I went from my little 15 dollar Rules Manual to a 40 dollar book with no chance to cut into that cost (kind of like how Flames of War allowed people to turn in their 2nd edition books for third edition ones).

It wasn't perfect, but they quite obviously did listen to feedback. Where they didn't listen to feedback was in changing core concepts of the revised game.

The change to 2.0 was the same as always happens when you streamline a game - some like it, and others lament what was lost. I consider both editions to be about equally fun, but 2.0 is a much easier game to teach which is a big advantage.

Not sending out new cards was understandable, but I think Wyrd should have released PDFs of the cards.

I haven't set up a swap shop thread yet, just been listing my figures locally on Kijiji. If you/your friends are in or around Toronto, I'd be happy to hook them up.

That said, I am very new to this hobby, and most of the figures being sold were simply attached to their base and primed black, so if they must be painted, I will unfortunately be of little assistance.
