Hi guys, not long got back into 40k after a near 20(!) year hiatus.

I've never played the table top game but I love the miniatures, as well as the Dawn of War games

I'm at a bit of an impasse. I know my work needs to be neater but I was hoping someone could help out with taking my painting to the next level? I just feel they look a little flat. I've been using washes, layering etc but feel they are somewhat lacking.

I posted a pic the other day of some Dark Eldar that my partner painted, and while I'm proud of what she has achieved, I would like to help her hone her skills but I reckon I need some help too!

Thanks for any feedback!

You may need a thinner brush/more brush control, or a brush with a better point.

the red marine is also irritating. There are parts of it that are well painted, and others that came out like slop.

anyway, useful suggestions:
edging/washing more of the model. It looks like the black-lining around the crevaces is inentional, and sloppiness lost the definition of the black edges. Go back in and clean those up. It looks like the black model was spray-primed, and then just trimmed in metal colors. Primer is not paint. The addition of paint will also give you an option of adding a sheen to the black. I feel that getting a pure pitch-perfect black is damnably hard. You shouldn't have used that bone color, but a gray, and probably a bit watered down, with a thin brush and darn good control. once dry, a thinner/smaller bit of white over the grey. (then again, it could also just be the grain from the photograph that makes me think it's just primer)

all of that aside, these are table-top standard. I wouldn't bat an eyelash.

To glimpse the future, you must look to the past and understand it. Names may change, but human behavior repeats itself. Prophetic insight is nothing more than profound hindsight.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.
