So one question that comes up every so often is how do you pack things to get the models you own from home to battle and back again. For some its a simple crate in the back of the car, but for those without a car or travelling by other means the issue can be more complex as one tries to fit the maximum amount of plastic/metal/resin into the least amount of bagspace.

So in the interests of sharing methods and ideas here's a big thread - any model range any army. All you need to do is say how you transport your army; what you can transport in your case(s) and also ideally show some pictures to aid the description. Hopefully we can build up a big thread chock full of ideas and examples to give other players a practical idea of what's possible to transport in what and also what ideas are out there.

KR foam in home depot small 'heavy duty' cardboard boxes. Magnets on the flaps, and good to go. KR is great to deal with too.

I would love a 'proper' case but need about $500 for a custom setup; for now I will stick with my affordable boxes. Thinking of hotgluing some nylon carry handles on the boxes, too.

I've got an Army Tranport bag for my FoW stuff, and all my British miniatures are in pluck-foam trays. I plan on doing the same for my Germans.

My Saga miniatures, on the other hand, are a problem - it's a pain when everything has spears pointing out at every angle. Though I've been looking at KR Multicases for a solution.

At the moment I blue tack them to the lid of a tupperware container and then put the bottom of the container on top as a lid of sorts. Works well enough for storage but I wouldn't trust it for transport.

I have a plastic tool box with foam around the compartments for extra protection. It's handy but my fingers are sore after holding it though!

I've been quite taken with the figures in comfort stuff; they have a few cases which keep the trays horizontal so everything stays where you put it. They've also got some filing style boxes for storage.

So I've got 2 travelling cases (6 tray and 8 tray) and a couple of storage boxes (4 tray) so I can put whatever I'm army using into a travel case with minimal fuss.

OP this is not so much the Great Thread of Cases as just this weeks.

My suggestion; KR Multicase.

Pretty much the cheapest complete solution - about £30 for a card case that will contain 1500+ points of most armies.

I have 8 cases now and their quality and customer service is fantastic. The Card multicase is durable protective enough for trips on the train/tube and combined with a backpack (or other bag options) it is weather proof and easily carried plus offers anonymity if so desired.

Their website is a bit confusing at first glance but more than adequate once you get your head round it (my suggestion is to have a pen and paper handy to write down the trays you want so you can double check as you go through the selection process). It's also not an issue as you can call them and the tell them what models you have and they will suggest the trays for you.

I had to do this last week as I had previously bought a half sized case for x-wing. Now overflowing I wanted a full size case with half x-wing (custom lambda) trays and half a mix of 28mm models and pick/pluck for big models for Necromunda.

1 phone call and 3 days later I had just what I wanted at the same cost as a standard case.

A bit of a reshuffle later and I have a full size x-wing case and a half size case for my Necromunda models.

Yes, I'd also thoroughly recommend KR Multicase – the staff there are helpful, communicative and enthusiastic, and the cases themselves are great. I've got both metal and card cases (I use the metal ones for transport, and the card ones for storage) and find them really sturdy.

KR multicase, I have about fifteen now. Armies are stored in card cases in an ikea bookshelf and then those cases for into a kaiser bag for transport. Easily as safe as any other method, and not as expensive as some.

Seem to be able to get much more in by just buying pick and pluck and standard infantry trays and cutting them up as required instead of using the custom ones.

For example, the custom necron annihilation barge tray is half case full height and takes 2x barges, when in reality you can get 4x barges (with bases removed) in a 2/3 height pick and pluck, with space above for a troop tray.

Can do similar with other things that really need full height, but only for a small part, and cut space out of the troop tray above where needed but still use the other space..

Another for KR. Most of us regulars have pitched in here already.

The foam is either 'cheap' pluck&play or standard troop trays, in various depths and widths.
Most GW armies have a range of KR custom trays, as they do for lots of other model companies.
They do a fair range of case types, and bags for their cardboard cases.

If you get trouble filling a case, email them with what you have, but the autofiller tool on their site should get most of it done for you.

My advice (for what it's worth) is to get a cardboard case with some custom trays and some normal trays, and see how to get on.
I upgraded from 2x cardboards to an aluminium case, and just transferred the trays over. Add some more foam, and I'm off again....

I take the subway from the office to my local GW - as such I needed a fairly compact case that could still hold my 1750-1850 pt army.

KR has been a god send with the Kaiser1 (looking to expand to a kaiser2 possibly). Between the kaiser1 and a fairly slim backpack I am able to carry my 2k farsight enlave or 1500 pts of guard (roughly 8 vehicles). The KR case also look fairly simple (black with small KR logo) so I don't feel awkward bringing it into my professional workplace environment - it just looks like a case that might hold your laptop and a small projector.

I use a combination of Tablewar cases for my infantry and Sabol Army Transport cases for my vehicles. Years ago I only utilized Army Transport cases but when I discovered Tablewar I switched over so that my armies could be displayed while being stored. It is pretty cool being able to walk by your storage case and see ranks of your models arrayed and ready to go.

Everyone on Dakka is going to go ape gak over KR and Battlefoam, so i'll vote Sabol.

Customer service rocks, bags are durable, foam is customizable, bags come in a wide array of sizes. I have 3 of them, all of them are at least 7 years old, and they look brand new.

I definitely recommend Sabol bags.

EDIT: broke the filter. Whoops.

Right now it varies between battlefoam shield bags and land raider/ghost ark boxes. Usually I just box an army till it's "finished" and has a decent paint job going on then I'll buy a battlefoam bag. Their cheapish, they protect things pretty well, and are convenient because my LFGS stocks them. Although I've been wanting to get a P.A.C.K. System for my armies but don't ever want to out down the loot for it.

For $60 + my time I bought a tool box on sale (22" X 9" X 12") and 6" of 3' X 3 foam sheets used for making pillows and seat cushions. Made custom cuts to fit all my models, plus vehicles.

Currently housing my Necrons ( GA, CCB, 5 Immortals, 5 Scarab bases, 20 Warriors, 5 Crypteks, 1 Overloard, 5 Deathmarks, and 6 Canoptek Wraiths). I still have 1/3 of the box left and plenty of foam left over to add probably another 1,000 - 2,000 pts. If I didn't have the vehicles in there I could easily fit over 5,000 pts in models.

I still have room to carry my dice, codex, army sheet, measuring tape, templates, and vehicle bases all in the same tool box with no issues.

It was well worth my time.

40K- I play guard and have about 8000 pts of stuff. Transport has always been an issue. I have a double wide GW case for my infantry along, then my artillery and cavalry are in 3 small cardboard boxes the artillery came in, 6 of my russes go inside a wooden case that originally held a clamp set, the other 2 russes and my 2 valkyries go inside a redwing boots box along with my 2 manticores, finally the last box is a barkbox that houses my 2 chimeras and 5 sentinels... It is frustrating hauling that all around when I go out for big games, heck I don't even have a method to haul around my baneblades, titan (when it finally gets finished) nor my thunderbolt and vulture... My Grey knights army of 3k and my nid army of 3k ride around temporarily in unpadded GW cadian battleforce boxes I kept. The rare time I play them that is. Sorry I don't have pictures, it's not a pretty sight anyhow and not really anything you can just get. I'm thinking the next step for my army money is a new transport system, one standardized.

Malifaux- I have a decent sized Guild crew and I use a battlefoam C4 bag with pluckfoam, as seen here http://us.battlefoam.com/c4-p-a-c-k-c4-bag-2-0-with-foam/ . I find it hold all my models and still have room to spare. In the back compartment I hold all the tools of the game like my stat cards and deck and tokens.

X-wing- I use a C4 bag with pluck foam for this as well. (My wife's old one as she outgrew it with her mailfaux crew.)

I love my battlefoam bags but it would get really expensive to buy for my guard army...

Battlefoam for me, I was very skeptical about it given it is quite costly and anyone can say how great things are in a youtube ad, but I won a pack 432 in a beast of war competition and was seriously impressed.

Enough impressed that I bought a 720 a couple of months later.

Great well made bags, the foam just works, cant praise it highly enough.

I like the Battlefoam bags, but they are pretty slow to deal with customer service stuff, even tray orders... And they are not very flexible: I don't like using their flash tool to make tray layouts because it's not very flexible and some of the pre-defined cutouts aren't useful, so I make layouts in Illustrator. This has worked a couple times w/out issue, then they start asking for random changes to how I send the files to them and the last order I made had some definite quality issues (which they did rectify).

Still, the P.A.C.K. GO is nice because I can use it as a backpack. Hoping that if I go to GenCon next year it'll be my only carry-on with a tablet instead of a laptop, etc.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I'm with you on Sabol as I own a lot of them. My main complaint are the older bags like the huge triple wide one which has no interior support so it caves inwards. However, I bought some of their newer heavy duty bags which use similar material as battle foam.. During the sale they had they were only 100$ each! and I bought 2 of them which held something like 14" of double wide foam trays. Awesome deal that couldn't be matched.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do
