I have been messing around with my army list trying to get into another play style and I came into a situation I didn't know how to deal with at all.

I was playing Eldar agaist Tau.  I was playing a Iyanden rules based army and decided to put in support weapons just to try something new.  I set the 3 platforms in front of my 6 crew and warlock.

During the game some drones came off the front of the path finders transport.  The drones fired and the wanted to tie my platforms up in HtH

What  I didn't understand was when the drones charged they only could get into base to base contact with the weapon platforms.  So when they charged they ended up in base to base contact with a model like the rules state you need to get an assult move.  But there was not one model in the 2" battle range becuase in Codex Eldar the platforms themselves cannot be hit, but they are still a model with a  pretty big base.

We ended up working it as a drawn combat and we piled in.

I was wondering if we were missing some rule or how you guys would have played this one.

I don't have my Eldar dex handy, but I'm pretty sure that the gun platforms themselves don't count as 'models' for the purposes of assault.  I would think that you would need to reach the crew (since the crew have to be within 2" of the gun)

Off the top, if I were the Tau player, I would have treated it as a failed assault (after a quick flip through the rules), and gone from there.

Since I'm going to be starting Eldar with the new Codex, I'll be interested in other Eldar players' comments.

This is a problem with Eldar weapons platforms in regular squads. They have no stats for themselves. As a consequence I normally see them just moved out of the way and played as if they didn't exist for purposes of assault.

Thankfully 4th edition DID introduce rules for fighting the support weapon batteries- they are defined as Artillery units per the appendix at the back of the book. If you read the rules for Artillery on page 56 you will find that you can fight the guns- they count as AV10 vehicles which are hit automatically, and destroyed by any glancing or penetrating hit.
