Maybe they saw a weapon in the lovely flower pattern
A 13-year-old Kansas boy says he was suspended for carrying a purse to Anderson County Senior-Junior School, KCTV-5 reported.

Skylar Davis, reacting to his suspension, told KCTV-5, "I don't think everyone should be treated differently. Everyone should have the same privileges."

Via KCTV-5
He said he has been carrying the colorful fabric Vera Bradley bag over his shoulder for some time with no issues.
"It expresses myself and I think everyone else can wear it, so I wear it as well," Skylar told KCTV5's Dave Jordan.
He was summoned to Assistant Principal Don Hillard's office after he wouldn't take it off.
"I went to the office and I refused to take it off, and they suspended me," the teen explained.
Davis' mother, Leslie Willis, was called to pick up her son. She told KCTV-5 that she was "a little furious" over the situation and is wondering about its timing, saying that her son has been carrying the purse to school since August.

Willis said she examined her son's student handbook and did not see anything regarding purses or bags. She told KCTV-5 that she was told that her son's suspension was for only one day. However KCTV-5 reported the suspension will likely continue until Skylar stops wearing the purse. Skylar apparently has said he has no intention of doing that.

The school district had no comment when contacted by Yahoo News.

Often, students find themselves in trouble not for their attire but for weapons, either real or imagined. A second-grader from Colorado was suspended after playing with an imaginary grenade on school grounds in February. And in Pennsylvania, a fifth-grade girl was suspended after bringing a piece of paper in the shape of a gun to school in January.

Teachers sometimes get in trouble over school rules as well. In 2009, Georgia teacher Ashley Payne resigned from her position after someone complained (via anonymous email) about one of the teacher's posts on Facebook, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

The post in question reportedly featured Payne drinking an alcoholic beverage. A caption said she was on her way to play "Crazy Bitch Bingo." Payne says she was pressured to resign.

As a guy, I never understood why we cant use purses? I mean A bag t carry all our stuff in? Gun lovers would love it because you can canceal a gun in it. Repairmen can carry spare tools. Hell, people that read alot can bring a book in it. But nope we men are stuck with pants

My girlfriend tried that for a while. Turns out it takes a year and a half to draw it if you need it.

Much better to keep it right next to the dong.

I have a messenger bag, it's like a purse but I don't pay 50 bucks for a floral pattern... Also purses are gaudy fething things, why would you want to carry one around?

Maybe a manly pattern? Like beer patterned purses, or black leathers with metal spikes?

I can't for the life of me think of enough things I'd want to carry on a daily basis that would warrant me wanting to carry a purse.

Also, insert insensitive comment about naming your son Skylar.

Like Rob Halford?

The last bit of the article caught my attention more than the purse stuff. Teachers can't party?

I think you need to reevaluate your definition of "manly'.

Beer pattern wouldn't be so bad, as long as there was a bottle opener on the murse, and I've seen women carry black leather with metal spikes, it's still a fething purse. And the FABULOUS Rob Halford would probably rock such a purse.

It's a unisex name, but it's more often associated with girls than boys. I believe "Skyler" is the 'boys spelling'

On the one hand I understand his/her point about wanting to have a man purse if he wants and it doesn't violate code. On the other hand getting suspended and staying suspended and making news thing screams horse gak to me.

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

However, he said all students, whether female or male, are prevented from having bags, purses, satchels and backpacks in the core classrooms like English and math. The bags must be stored in lockers during class time, he said.

"We strive to make sure we treat every kid alike and there are classroom rules we expect kids to follow," he told KCTV5 on Thursday. "They can bring (bags and purses) to school. There's no policy against that. But the classroom rules are that they can't bring it to the classroom."

From the article. http://www.kctv5.com/story/23899790/boy-13-suspended-for-carrying-vera-bradley-purse

1. Break the rules and get punished.
2. Make it all about your sexuality or gender
3. Profit!

Cpt. Jake got to it. I saw this earlier and the article left that bit out, but if you went to the original story it is there. Someone trying to stir up trouble where none need exist.

So, in truth he got into troubles not for being a lad with a purse, but for having a purse when no one was supossed to?

Also, not enough pockets? I've made me 3 of this and have 'em on my belt all the time.

Isn't it pretty standard these days that bags arn't allowed in classrooms? I don't think I ever attended a school that did it any other way post 3rd grade and being from a military family I went to a lot of schools.

I've never attended any school that didn't allow bags in the classroom, but then I've only attended private schools. I HAVE been in my mother in law's public high school classroom in the past year and they still allow students to have bags in class.

I think it's more urban schools that disallow it than suburban ones. I know our district used to require see thru back packs but they don't even do that anymore.

Wonder if it depends on local crime rates? I can chalk the schools on base up to being on base, but for the later half of elementary and most of hichshool I went to off base schools in, less than stellar neighborhoods (although my highschool was the second best on in the district it just happened to be in the really grimy part of Fayetteville).

Again, can't speak to the public schools, but neither factor influenced New Orleans private schools when I went.

My MiL's school still allows gun racks on student vehicles, but hey, it's Mississippi, they tend to go hunting after school.

That doesn't surprise me. Private schools tend to have a higher standard of behavior than public. Not to many generic high school hoodlums who should be in juvie not school running around in them XD

Probably work

I have a manba... err, satchel that I carry my D&D stuff, tablet, and flask in for when I go places other than my apartment to play. It's pretty handy at Gencon, and it's leather, so it blends in with a costume rather well.

I also made the argument at work to my manager some time ago that I should be allowed to wear kilts on the basis that women can wear skirts and anything else is gender discrimination. He told me that as long as I refer to the kilt as a skirt, and I wear something under it, he had no problem with it.

I still haven't done it yet, but soon.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Regarding the article and in a rare change of heart, I now support the school district.

No one is allowed the purses at the time he was carrying one. Also, something about the picture of the kid makes me want to kick him, or maybe force him to work in a coal mine for a couple years. Maybe turn him upside down and use his hair to clean up spills. Maybe just splash lye on his hand.

Oddly enough, the private school I attended didn't let us take backpacks from classroom to classroom. You came in, dropped your backpack that was in the locker of your homeroom, grabbed your books for your first few classes, dropped the appropriate books off before lunch, picked up the new ones after lunch, etc...

Once I got into high school we were allowed backpacks everywhere.

I wonder, if you were still of school age, and started attending classes wearing a tool belt (its kinda the same thing, only on a belt ) how they'd react?
