With my Blood Angels buddy back in country it was time for a monolithic battle between ancient adversaries. These Blood Angels have plagued me for more than ten years and I relished the opportunity for retribution. We decided to go with a suitably large game and settled on 6k with standard rules. In this battle my Iron Warriors, the 8th Grand Company, along with a host of Khorne Demons go head to head with the top chefs in red (chop-chop masters) over the wartorn battle scape of Chicogus! I took a lot of photos but towards the end they started to get really blurry.

A full set of battle images is available here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-44940-37442_IW%20vs%20BA%206k.html

The Story

Librarian Alessander took a moment to survey the warriors grouped around the hololith display. Lazily rotating above them was a smoke wreathed planet still bearing the scars of lance burns and kinetic bombardment. "It is clear that the orbital strike has failed to halt weapons production on Chicogus," began Alessander, "subterranean facilities continue to manufacture weapons and ammunition under the lordship of the Iron Warriors. These vile traitors are supplying combat zones throughout the sub-sector and preventing its reclamation by Imperial forces."
Servos whined in the massively armored shoulder of Alessander's blue Terminator Armor as he pointed to a location on the display. In response the ethereal image expanded until only a small section of a ruined city was visible. What appeared to be smoke or steam poured out from pipes jutting from the earth. "According to our Auspex surveys a Titan-Class plasma-fusion reactor dwells deep beneath the surface of this location. This is the power source for the majority of the Iron Warriors held Forge Complex. It is imperative that we dismantle or destroy this facility."
A look around the table revealed nodding of heads and murmurs of agreement. High Chaplain Astorath stood flanked by his fellow Reclusiarch and Sanguinary Priests. "I will awaken all available Death Company for the assault," contributed the sombre Chaplain, "the facility is sure to be well protected."
From a dark corner of the room another mournful voice emerged, "I have foreseen what may and may not come to pass but this much is clear, while the Iron Warriors have this power source there will be no end to war here."
Alessander felt the presence of Chief Librarian Mephiston unfold itself like a set of mighty wings over the command chamber. Behind Alessander, similarly adorned in blue Power Armor, stood two of his brother Librarians. He could sense their psyches wavering in the presence of the master. "I have also seen my fate," continued Mephiston, "and I am certain that I will meet the gaze of their traitorous leader. The ancient one who calls himself Warsmith of the 8th Grand Company; Valensus is his name."

Blood Angels Turn 1

Having failed to seize the initiative and with night fighting on, the Blood Angels started the fireworks. A Drop Pod crashes to the ground on a plume of jet fire. Out of its doors emerge ten Sternguard in two Combat Squads.

Sternguard On The Scene!

The Librarians glimpse into possible futures and utilize their prescience to boost the shooting of several squads. All forces advance but the Vindicator throws a track on a crater immobilizing it . In their opening salvo the Sternguard eliminate one of the Obliterator squads for First Blood; although it takes both Combat Squads and two die to Over-Heating. On the north side of the battlefield the Raptors and Bloodletters lose a few men to Tactical Marines and random shots and the Plague Marine Rhino is immobilized by Devastators. On the south side the the Blood Angels Dreadnought and Razorback take out the Nurgle Lord's Rhino, killing a bike in the blast somehow. Devastators take out the Fallen's Rhino with Prescience guided shots. Also guided by Prescience both Terminator Squads open up. The five-man uses its Cyclone to get a shaken and weapon destroyed result on the Melta-Havoc's Rhino. The ten-man squad guns down five Thousand Sons.

Where Have My Rhinos Gone?

Iron Warriors Turn 1

The Slaanesh Sorcerer boosts the Nurgle Bikes with Endurance and curses the Scouts in the center with Symphony of Pain. The Bloodletters and Terminators advance on the left but stay out of charge range. Both Monsters swoop up the southern edge swiftly followed by Kharn's Rhino (which Turbo-Boosts to get on the other side of the building) and the Plague Marines now on foot. The possessed wheel around and prepare to charge the Sternguard. Fire from across the Iron Warriors lines nets some kills from various Assault Marine squads. The Obliterators in the tower on the north side of the battlefield manage to immobilize the Land Raider Crusader through the gloom with Lascannons. The Combat Squad of Scouts in the center lose four of their number to Cover Ignoring +1S Sonic Weapons. The Possessed assault the Sternguard losing two to Overwatch who in turn lose a man to Over-Heating. In combat the Possessed manage to kill two Sternguard for no losses so the result is a push.

Blood Angels Turn 2

Another pillar of fire descends from the sky announcing the arrival of the Furioso Dreadnought!

FURIOSO!!!!!!!!!!!

Plummeting through the smoke trail left by the Drop Pod; a unit of Vanguard Veterans hurls towards the surface. At the last moment their jetpacks fire into life preventing the veterans from becoming red smears on the asphalt. Instead they land safely next to the Furioso and eye the Noise Marines with malicious intent. On the south side of the battlefield two Combat Squads of Assault Marines deploy on wings of flame, one squad coming to rest behind the Defiler with Meltaguns drawn.

Two Meltaguns On Rear Armor! Oh No!

The Librarians channel the warp once more to lay the malady of Misfortune on the Demon Prince of Nurgle and the boon of Forewarning on the Sanguinary Guard. On the north side the Blood Angels surge forward en masse with Mephiston leading the charge; followed by the Death Company and Assault Marines.

Hold The Line Boys!

The Sanguinary Guard boost forward on the opposite edge of the table, preferring any form of combat to the vulnerability of the open. A torrent of weapons fire erupts from the Blood Angels left flank coating the Nurgle Prince in Sniper Rounds, Krak Missiles, and Mass-Reactive Shells; bringing him down in a rain of rancid flesh and demonic essence. The Bloodthirster absorbs the remaining fire crashing to the ground but only taking a single wound. The Defiler shrugs off Meltagun beams and Krak Grenades; it's demonic aura proving stronger than the potent weapons. Devastator firing drills see Kharn's Rhino explode with no casualties. On the north side, Lascannon fire reduces the Melta-Havoc's Rhino to a smoldering wreck. As the downed Bloodthirster roared in defiance from its impact crater the Sanguinary Guard charged; wielding their Glaives Encarmine to deadly effect.

Blood of Sanguinius!

Skulls For The Throne!

In a flurry of attacks the Bloodthirster chopped into the Sanguinary Guard, easily capable of hacking them to bits, but thanks to their Psychic Forewarning the white armored warriors were able to dodge all but two man-sundering blows. In response their Glaives Encarmine sang and dismembered the giant beast leaving him as a dissolving pile, banished back to the warp . NExt to the Sanguinary Guard charged Astorath with his Assault Squad retinue; intent on butchering Kharn and his followers. Landing atop the shattered Aquila Shrine the High Chaplain of the Blood Angels roared in challenge. Never to be outdone Kharn scaled the building with incredible speed and met the dark winged Blood Angel in a duel.

Controlled Fury VS Unquenchable Rage!

Lightning fast strikes arced back and forth between the combatants with Gorechild and The Exectuioner's Axe cleaving into bodies, deflecting off of energy shields, and crashing off of each other. Despite landing six wounds Kharn was unable to best Astorath who saved four of them. In response Kharn took a wound after similarly passing two of three saves granted by his Chaotic Aura. The combat between their minions sees the Khorne Marines trading evenly with the Assault Marines. In the center of the Iron Warriors lines the Vanguard launch a vicious assault on the Noise Marines.

Sneak Attack!

With preternatural speed the Noise Marines wheel on the Vanguard Veterans and unleash a cacophonous wall of noise. Two Vanguard fall to the ground, clutching their helmets as blood poured from their crushed cerebellums. The Slaaneshi Sorcerer leading the Noise Marines calls out the Vanguard Sergeant and quickly dispatches him with his Force Sword. In return the Vanguard Veterans cut down several Noise marines for no losses in return making the combat a push. Next to them the Sternguard lose three more of their number to the Possessed marines but manage to hold their ground. On the north side things don't go according to plan. Mephiston fails his charge against the Bloodletters, The Death Company fails its charge against the Melta-Havocs, and the Assault marines fail their charge against the the Raptors. It seems that the Iron Warriors have just gained some breathing room .

So Close!

Iron Warriors Turn 2

Over the din of the carnage being wrought the sound of approaching jet engines could be heard. The roar transformed into a screech as a mechanical beast known as a Heldrake emerged through the smog. At the will of their masters, two small clusters of automata shuffled forward to support the Iron Warriors lines. With a *pop* reality was rent asunder and ten Bloodletters stepped through to join their brethren on the north side.

Cult-Bots Go!

Calling forth the chaotic energies of the warp the Sorcerers continued to lay curses on anyone in reach and both the Vanguard Veterans and Assault Marines suffered maladies. Bounding forward on the Iron Warriors northern front, the Bloodletters and Warsmith Valensus with his retinue of Terminators planned on taking advantage of the Blood Angel's stumblings. On the other side of the battlefield the Defiler rushed towards the Blood Angels vehicles, supported by a Lord of Nurgle and his Plague Marines. Surrounding the recently arrived Assault Marines the Nurgle Bikes open fire felling two of their number. The Cult-Bots add their fire but fail to penetrate the red Power Armor. Around them the Plague Marines, Fallen, and Helbrutes open up on various targets. Several scouts and assault marines fall but the Furioso targeted on the side armor by its Chaotic counterparts shrugs off the fire without even a scratch . With an eardrum rupturing scream the Heldrake belches a deluge of green balefire down on The Death Company, consuming five of them. The Obliterators add their fire, dousing the black armored psychotics in volcanic plasma, felling three more.

Burn!

Leaping forward on bat-like wings the Raptors open fire on the Vindicator, reducing it to smoking crater. Recognizing the threat presented soaring towards their lines on angelic wings of pure energy the Iron Warriors raise their weapons and open fire on the Lord of Death. The combined fire of the Melta-Havocs and Terminators nets two wounds from the Chief Librarian. Despite being savaged by the arrival of the Heldrake and being fired on point blank by two Meltaguns the intrepid Land Speeder remains aloft. With the Blood Banner pulsing, a tide of violence is unleashed on the Assault Marines and the Bloodletters butcher them to a man.

Blood For The Blood Guy!

Attempting to follow suit the Terminators rush towards Mephiston; Warsmith Valensus eager to come to grips with this worthy challenger. Unfortunately the 3" charge through difficult terrain proves to much for the mighty Terminators and they are left standing in the open . In the center the Noise Marines and Possessed dispatch the remaining Vanguard and Sternguard Veterans. Following a close range blast from its Battle Cannon, that nearly damages itself, the Defiler charged into the Blood Angels Baal Predator and Rhino, wrecking them both. The Nurgle Sorcerer and his companion bikes rush the Assault Marines, losing one to a Meltagun in overwatch. A single slain Blood Angels zeros the combat to a push. At the highest point of the battlefield Kharn launches another vicious assault on Astorath. This time Kharn's rage and martial skill prove too much for the Executioner and his broken body is sent plummeting to the ground.

There Can Only Be One!

End Of Turn 2

End Of Turn 2

A Closer Look

Blood Angels Turn 3

Overcoming the energized forces of the warp the Blood Angels Librarians peer into the future once more, guiding the aim of their heavy support towards the fearsome Heldrake with Prescience. They also curse the Bloodletters with Misfortune and bless the Sanguinary Guard with Forewarning. Unfettered by the savagery unleashed upon them The Death Company advanced on the Terminators; prepared to kill every one of them or die trying. Meanwhile, Mephiston drifts away from the Warmsmith and his men towards the remaining Thousand Sons . On the south side the remaining Sanguinary Guard leap towards the Khorne Marines and Kharn while the recently dismounted Assault Marines take aim with their weapons. Across the Blood Angels lines weapons were raised skywards and targeting systems struggled to track the zooming Heldrake. At first the monstrosity managed to avoid the incoming missiles and las-beams but the Assault Cannons wielded by the Guided Terminators managed to draw a bead and knock the flyer off course. This momentary fault costs the Heldrake dearly as a Krak Missile punches through its underbelly and erupts within it; causing the Heldrake to explode fantastically and crash to the ground.

Ma Turkey!

From high atop the tower in the Blood Angels center, a Tactical Marine with a Plasma Cannon takes a long range shot at the fallen. Hist aim is true and four of the traitors are consumed by the flood of super-heated plasma. The Assault Marines open up on the Khone Marines with Bolt Pistols and Meltaguns, felling several of the enraged butchers. On the north side the Land Raider Crusader combines its fire with that of the Terminators to gun down a score of Bloodletters. The Blood Angels Terminators follow this up with a brutal assault; slaughtering the remaining demons and suffering no casualties.

Charge!

The Death Company hits with the force of a thunderbolt inflicting twenty-two wounds on the Chaos Terminators! But Tzeentch smiles on his followers and they make every save ! Warsmith Valensus killed three of The Death Company with his misbehaving Demon Weapon allowing them to smush two Terminators with Power Fists before they are all brutally hacked apart by Power Axes. While his charges died around him the Reclusiarch dueled with the Terminator Champion to a stalemate.

With Me Warriors Of The Emperor! Guys?

Mephiston comes crashing down onto the unsuspecting Thousand Sons and immediately executes the Aspiring Sorcerer in a brief duel. Next to the doomed Death Company on the northern edge of the battlefield a squad of Assault Marines assaults and dispatches the remaining Raptors. In the center of the Iron Warriors lines the Furioso Dreadnought smashes into the Noise Marines, slaughtering six of them with its Blood Talons. Unable to damage the massively armored sarcophagus the Noise Marines opt out of the fight and flee the field of battle. Their glaives singing, the Sanguinary Guard charge the few remaining Khorne Marines. Although the Khorne Champion kills their sergeant in a challenge the white armored Blood Angels slay the remaining followers of the Blood God leaving only Kharn standing. The Assault Marines and Nurgle Bikes continue to skirmish with both sides suffering a loss; resulting in a draw. Things are getting grimy .

Iron Warriors Turn 3

With fewer and fewer options left to them the Iron Warriors advance and open fire. The Nurgle Sorcerer Enfeebles the Assault Marines but the Terminator Librarian denies his Gift of Contagion. The Obliterators and Missile-Havocs unleash a tidal wave of Assault Cannon shells and Krak Missiles that washes over the approaching Assault Marines killing five of their number. The Plague Marines still embarked in their Rhino open up on the approaching Furioso; confident that their Plasma Guns combined with the Helbrutes fire would be enough to slow the behemoth war engine. They were mistaken . The Melta-Havocs seized their long awaited opportunity and rushed towards the Land Raider Crusader, firing their Meltaguns as they ran. Despite two hits and penetrations they failed to cause an explosion.

So Close!

On the other side of the battlefield, the Nurgle Lord unleashes a gout of ehtereal flame from his Burning Brand supported by the guns of his Plague Marines. Together they bring down two Terminators and the remaining Scouts.

I'm Over Here But The Fire Is Over There!

With a thump the Defiler fires its chest-mounted Battle Cannon directly into the huddled Assault Marines launching six of their number into the air as a plume of broken armor and body parts. Capitalizing on the shock of the blast the Defiler comes crashing into the Assault Marines crushing all of them with its massive claws.

Waaagh!

Many Choppy Apendages

Facing two members of the Sanguinary Guard while his Champion engaged the Sanguinary Priest Kharn struck out with Gorechild. He managed to behead the unsuspecting Champion of Khorne but failed to get a wound past the Forewarned Sanguinary Guard; his axe axe blows deflecting or slicing harmlessly through the air. In return the Sanguinary Guard duo took to the air surrounding Kharn in a swirling blur of white armor and Jump Pack fire. Simultaneously, the two warriors darted towards Kharn and plunged their Glaives Encarmine through his neck and torso. Kharn slumped to his knees, blood pouring from his many wounds as his chemical stimulants and accelerated healing failed. Behind this scene the Cultbots charged into the ongoing scrap between the Nurgle Sorcerer and Assault Marines. Despite their high number of attacks the Cult-Bots failed to get any wounds past the red Power Armor although the Sorcerer impaled one Blood Angel on his Force Sword. The lone marine held his ground. In the center Mephiston fails to get any wounds past the Thousand Sons; it's as if he wants to stay stuck combat! On the north side Warsmith Valensus Heroically Intervenes in the challenge between the Terminator Champion and Reclusiarch; murdering the beleaguered chaplain.

Domo Arigato Mr. Cult-Boto

Blood Angels Turn 4

The Librarian on the northern front leaves a parting gift of Misfotrune for the Terminators before leaving with his remaining Assault Marines to reinforce the central fire base and objective. On the south side the Nurgle Lord is able to deny the same effect. Cycling up their assault cannons, the Terminators advance on the spider like Defiler while the Sanguinary Guard boost overhead towards the Plague Marines and Lord.

Once More Unto The Breach!

Hundreds of shells pour out of the rapidly rotating Assault Cannons and hose the Defiler down in steel; damaging its hull. The Devastators add their fire with Krak Missiles and Lascannon beams piercing its skin; bringing it crashing to the ground. With one last spasm of its legs an other-worldly howl escapes the shattered Defiler and it ceases to move. On the north side the Land Raider Crusader, Terminators, Devastators, and Tactical Marines, open up on Warsmith Valensus and his retinue. Despite their thick armor, the weight of fire combined with Misfortune proves to much for the Chaos Terminators and all of them die; even Warsmith Valensus takes two wounds !

My Terminators! Nooooo!

In the center the Furioso Dreadnought barrels towards the Plague Marines Rhino, its Meltagun spitting ahead of it and piercing the armored APC, wrecking it. With the possessed blocking the port exit the Plague Marines are forced to disembark right in the path of the unstoppable two-ton killing machine. The Furioso's momentum carries it right into the Plague Marines and it crushes four of them in its Blood Talons. The Plague Marine Champion fails to hurt the beast with his Power Fist and the combat continues.

The Toughest Guys in the Universe... Not To A Furioso!

On the south side the Sanguinary Guard Charge into the Plague Marines slaying three of them with their Glaives. The Plague Marine Champion calls out the Sanguinary Priest; ignoring the warrior-priest's attacks and gripping him in his Power Fist. A crunching sound announces the priest's demise. Above, the devotees of Nurgle stab and slash with their Plague Knives but fail to penetrate the Artificer Armor of the Sanguinary Guard. The Nurgle Lord settles matters though, as his hammer caves in the skulls of both veterans.

Everyone's Luck Runs Out, Especially Without Forewarning!

Nearby the Nurgle Sorcerer dispatches the last Assault Marine and advances on the Objective. In the center Mephiston slays another Thousand Son leaving a single survivor.

Good Job Surviving I Guess

Iron Warriors Turn 4

The Nurgle Sorcerer call on the Plague Father and hurls Maledictions towards the oncoming terminators Enfeebling them although the Gift of Contagion is Denied. Being untethered by combat allows the Sorcerer to boost forward and join the remaining Plague Marines. The last Nurgle Bike moves towards the Terminators. Behind him the Cult-Bots scuttle onto the Objective. The Nurgle Lord and his surviving Plague Marines put themselves between the Terminators and the Objective. On the north side, the Melta-Havocs advance into Blood Angels territory firing into the Land Raider Crusader as they do; finally destroying the massive machine.

There They Go

Warsmith Valensus dashed towards the embattled Plague Marines to save them from being slaughtered by the Furioso. Following him, the Possessed Marines and Bloodletters move on Mephiston and the surviving Thousand Son. The Obliterators finish of the remainder of the five man Terminator Squad and the Missile-Havocs take shots at Tactical Marines killing a couple. On the south side the Nurgle Lord, Plague Marines, Bike, lone Fallen, and Helbrutes manage to kill five Enfeebled Terminators. In the center Warsmith Valensus charges the Furioso, but doesn't have the range! Once again, Difficult Terrain has prevented an easy charge (4") !

Not Again!

The Furioso tore apart two more Plague Marines with his Blood Talons and once again they failed to hurt him. The Possessed charged Mephiston and managed to sneak a wound past his armor after losing one of their number and the Thousand Son. The Bloodletters failed to make their charge distance.

Blood Angels Turn 5

Once again the Blood Angels Librarian lashed out with curses; burdening the Plague Marines with Misfortune. The Terminators advanced towards the Plague Marines and opened fire; felling two of their number. Realizing that the Bloodletters and Cult-Bots are now the lynchpins of the game the southern Blood Angels heavy support targets them mercilessly. Only five each of the Cult-Bots and Bloodletters survive the rain of fire. Luckily the Cult-Bots hold. Those not firing on the minions take shots at the Warsmith but fail to pierce his armor. Both Drop Pods add their fire and one of the Mass-Reactive rounds finds a weak point! Warsmith Valensus finally succumbs to his wounds and teleports off the field in a flash of light. On the south side the Terminators charge the combined squad of Plague Marines, Nurgle Lord, and Nurgle Sorcerer. The Nurgle Lord bellows out a challenge that the Blood Angels Librarian accepts and with quick cutting strikes the Terminator Armored Psyker beheads the sluggish Iron Warriors leader. The remaining Plague Marines manage to drag down three more Terminators before being pulverized into sticky piles. In the center, the Furioso continued to slaughter the Plague Marines killing an additional two but the Plague Champion finally connected with his Power Fist; putting down the raging bull. Mephiston easily dispatched the remaining two Possessed Marines and, finally free of combat, he consolidated on top of the Objective.

Iron Warriors Turn 5

The Nurgle Sorcerer Enfeebles the Terminators once again. The Bloodletters and Plague Marines approach Mephiston, preparing to charge. The lone Nurgle Biker moves on the last Assault Marine on the south side and takes him out with Bolters. The Obliterators, Havocs, and Helbrutes fire into the Tactical Marines with minimal effect thanks to cover and Going To Ground. With a roar the Bloodletters and Plague Marines charge Mephiston who accepts a challenge from the Plague Champion and promptly kills him. The combat to the south continues with the Nurgle Sorcerer taking up the mantle of challenge from the fallen Lord. While the remaining two Terminators and the Sanguinary Priest look on the Librarian and Sorcerer exchange blows. The Librarian's armor deflects the Sorcerer's attacks but in return the Sigil of Corruption and high toughness prevents any return damage.

Slap Fight! Begin!

We see if the game continues and it does.

Blood Angels Turn 6

With most units engaged we go straight to shooting. The big question is, will the Cult-Bots survive? Frag Missiles cost them three of their number but luckily they hold on. Mephiston kills a couple Bloodletters while the Librarian and Sorcerer slap away.

Iron Warriors Turn 6

It is at this moment that I see a glimpse of victory. The lone biker is still alive and can really move if he needs to. I turbo-boost him the full distance on top of the Objective in the Blood Angels center; denying it.

Will The Game End?

The Sorcerer and Librarian continue to slap each other gingerly; almost tenderly. We roll to see if the game continues. I pray to the Chaos Gods... but am denied.

At this point we do a quick round of Blood Angels shooting to see if the Nurgle Bike and the Cult-Bots survive. They don't, so we call it.

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

I love how diverse the chaos army is. A bit of everything really instead of 3x Helldrake 3x Nurgle Oblit etc

Can't speak for the Blood Angels though, I don't know what they usually take. Certainly points for playing Blood Angels though!

What a great game!

Nice to see two huge well painted armies slug it out.

I am biased, but nice to see the Iron Warriors in action too, particularly with such a varied list!

Great looking armies and a great fight.

I am curious as to how the cult bots were made. I've been thinking of making a mechanicus addition to my iron warrior and need ideas for servitor cultists

Great report and really good looking armies.

Any chance of seeing clearer close-ups of some of the models next report? I'd really like to see some of the detail on those paint jobs.

Thanks for posting

Haha theres something awesome about such huge armies going at it. I felt like each turn a couple units were being wiped off the board, but then there was just more there to wipe the other guys units off the board.

Those are epic scale knight titans. I bought them for an aborted mechanicus army for an unreasonable price. i thought they were the size of terminators! dumb.

Well I don't know when the next report will be but.... Buh-Bam!

That's not gleam, its paint.

My buddy is too damn good at painting.

Again, not light reflection. Paint.

That Damn Furioso!

Also some of my dumb guys. I'm kidding, I love my Iron Warriors. They just look like crap next to these Blood Angels. I do have models painted to a higher standard I just chose to keep my Iron Warriors consistent (and easy!). You can see more of my work at the gallery link at the bottom.

My favorite rhino. The Nurgle Lord rides in it even though it is 1k sons and i have 2 nurgle rhinos.

Nonsense. The Battle Company box is perfect for filling out your ranks of aspect warriors with a large contingent from the Screaming Baldies shrine.
