Hello,

I am trying to model some XV8 Crisis suits and turn them into/make them look like Tau Commanders. Could someone please help me and give me ideas on what to do??

I will add some pictures of what I already have in a little bit.

I appreciate the help.

You refering to the new commander suit in finecast or just make them look unique enough to use as commanders?

If it's the later, there are a lot of simple head conversions using the front of a target lock in front of the square visor and then using the barrels of pulse carbines along the sides and flush with the front of the target lock. Simple, cheap, and effective.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

What exactly are you looking to do? There are a fair few bits that can be used to modify the Crisis suits. This thread has my Farsight army from a couple of years back, there are several bits being used to convert the Crisis suits to make them stand out (as the army contains a lot of them). For example, the old metal heads from the old commander kit, Tomb Spyder heads and SM vehicle targeters make for good variation.

The banner from the HE chariot makes for a good samurai-esq. banner to slap on the back of them. Or you could just do like I did with the big man himself and convert it from one of FW's Hazard suits.

Hope that gives you a few ideas.

Hey, I too dislike the stock XV8 so here are some of the things I've done/seen

Cut the fingers off power fists and green stuff the hole that has the original fingers

Cut out the chest and add a Landraider sponson sensor

Buy XV89, these are from forgeworld and in my opinion truly gorgeous.

Lastly google Tael or go to Advanced Tau Tacticia and look at his work it's truly amazing.

The biggest difference between standard xv8s and the commander variant is the waist. The forearms are a bit longer too, but its the waist that really changes the look. Makes them a bit longer and more elegant.

Savageconvoy,

I appreciate your response. I am planning on making them look good enough so they will pass as commanders. I really like your idea with changing up the head some. Have you done it before? And if so do you have a picture you could post of what it looks like?

Thanks again.

here's a few of the one's I've made. I actually ended up doing these to most of my suits as a way to distinguish between bodyguards, elites, and HQ.

The arms and legs are pretty easy to reposition, this could help make the suits look much more dynamic. I've this once or twice, and plan to do so for the rest of the suits in my new cadre.

Things I have done to make better looking suits.

* Break the arms and legs at the joint, and reposition.
* make custom wargear (combining bits of the various multi trackers, weapon parts, etc.) and mount on shoulders.
* Different colors, heads, stripes, decals, etc..
* alternative parts - forgeworld upgrades, chaperhouse heads, paulson games heads, etc.
* make small banners (asian style) and put on jetpack
* cool basing - landing on a dead marine, etc.

have fun with it, experiment.

I've thought about it a bit, and I think you just need to cut the torso just above the hip joints. However I've always stalled in finding an appropriate bit to put in there to get the waist joint looking good. The Commander suit has a circular aspect, but getting the right sized circle might be tricky and then merging it into the decidedly non-circular bits above and below the waist will also need some work. It might just need a trip to the DIY shop with the model and a rummage through their random pipe and washer collection to find something of a suitable size. Or maybe something could be fashioned out of drone parts and plasticard tube?

Thanks for the ideas! Oh and Savageconvoy, thanks for the pics.

I think that your bases look really cool, how did you make them look like that? They look like ice.

I will try all of these ideas.

Does anyone have any ideas on really cool paint schemes? I know that there is the regular Tau colors and the Farsight Enclave colors, but does anyone else have ideas? If you have models painted like that too, pics would be awesome.

For a while I've been trying to find a way to make unique looking crisis suits. One of my experiments was with converting commander farsight to a basic XV8.

I'm going to be rolling out these suits to replace my existing forgeworld XV8s as they appear to be more nimble.

You can always use a converted farsight as your commander.

The bases are just styrofoam coated with some plaster made for styrofoam. I first crush it down the best I can, coat it a few times with plaster, sand it down to make it smoother, painted it deep blue and went up to lighter shades until finally getting white tips.

For the snow it's just elmer's glue mixed with baking soda. Add a drop of white paint to prevent it from yellowing and just find a mix ratio you like.

For paint scheme's I think neutral colors with one bright color works very well with the tau models. For me I went with black, light grey/silver, and a light blue. It's all a matter of personal preference though.

Savageconvoy,

Ok sounds great. So I should be able to pick up everything at like a Home Depot?

Also whats the brand and color names of your paint scheme, that looks really cool too. I would really like to know, your suit looks like such a badass!!

If any of you guys have more pictures of what you have done, that would be great too.

I got all my supplies at hobby lobby. Simple styrofoam board and 'Magikote" plaster. Though check out the hardware store for other useful items. I hear foam insulation is good.

I also just redid a bunch of my bases using cork instead of the styrofoam.

As for the paints, I started off using citadel paints and moved over to vallejo recently. I usually mix various paints and thinning agents to get the right thickness and color. The ones you see in the pics were done using mythril silver and codex grey which I think is discontinued.

Could I please have the specific paint colors for your citadel paints if you know them?

It's "Codex Grey" and "Mithril Silver" but those are both discontinued.

Regarding paints there are AT LEAST three open threads going on right now regarding different paint brands, good paint starter sets and working with paints.

Check all of those out to answer tons of questions about what paints to get.

best of luck and have fun!

Ok cool.

I will go check out the other threads too.

Now I have another modeling problem, how do I model a riptide so it can look more unique, and how can I make it look like O'Vesa?

my biggest complaint about stock XV8s are the legs. Arms can be easily reposed, just cut off the "elbow" and greenstuff a new flat disc in it place. Making the decal for the "bolt" thats usually there isnt that hard since its just a slight indent.

The legs.....i tried multiple tactics on one of my XV8s to change them. I ended up just buying an extra Broadside leg pair from ebay to replace them because i couldnt make them look "real" lol. Going to use him as a commander since he clearly is standing out with those broadside legs lol.
I hate them because theyre straight, have no knees, and the lower half has no armor. I cant fix the armor because adding armor to a straight chicken-leg makes it look even dumber rofl. Really wish i could buy XV8-sized Riptide leg pieces, those legs are cool.

EDIT: Ovesa is literally just a riptide with an IA and Fusion with some unique painting marks. If you want a more unique riptide, you are going to either have to make some incredible paintscheme or cut off the pegs and repose him, which isnt easy since that makes you hold like 8 pieces to make sure it works in that position before you glue lol. Best riptide repose ive seen they made it look like it was surging forward, shield in front gun at the ready and used the oversized skimmer peg it comes with to make it more sturdy in that pose, since only one foot was on the ground.

I really appreciate your thoughts I'll try that out.

Could someone help me find colors that are very similar to these from the newer GW Citadel paint line? :

Check out above for the pics of the paint scheme that I want to do. It was originally posted by Savageconvoy. I want to try and recreate the same scheme. Could someone help me find all of the new Citadel colors I would need to do that?

For the Riptide the easiest thing to remodel is just the head. Using a standard crisis suit head fits in the same standard neck socket but ends up looking a lot better.
I ended up with a spare commander head from the finecast upgrade pack and used it on one. The other I used the spare cockpit canopy from the sunshark kit.
