i want to flesh out the background story for my CSM army. to do this fully i need too know what their lives where like before Being tainted by chaos, what ranks they held. the key to any good story is having a complete background, even if the audience will never know it exists.

just an odd fact and example, for the original batman movies, Tim Burton had Bruce Wayne's next door neighbor's house completely built and furnished even though the inside of it was never filmed.

so my request is for anyone with any knowledge of SM Rank system and chain of command to please share what you know. any other fluff would also be appreciated

any chapter will do as my army consists of oddball rejects of many chapters and legions

Each of the Chapters into which the Legiones Astartes were subdivided consisted of roughly 1,000 warriors. A large section of the Codex Astartes is dedicated to structuring the organisation of these Chapters. A Chapter consists of ten companies each numbering 100 Space Marines. The warriors of these companies are organised into 10 squads of 10 Astartes led by a Sergeant. In addition to this basic fighting unit, each company has its own Captain, Standard Bearer, Chaplain, and Apothecary. Every company, with the exception of the Scout Company, maintains a pool of Rhino transports for its squads and officers. The elite 1st Company is also equipped with Land Raider tanks to carry heavily-armoured Terminator Squads. It is customary for Dreadnoughts to remain with their company, as their fearsome presence bolsters the company’s fighting strength.

Scout > Battle Brother > Sergeant > Captain > Chapter Master.

Everything else is either outside the chain of command, an appointed position, or an additional duty (like Master of the Armory or Chief Librarian or Standard Bearer).

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
