Hey guys, we're currently studying The Histories by Herodotus in Classical Civilization, and I thought it'd be cool to do a small-scale game of Greeks vs Persians as part of the course (much like how watching 300 is part of the course).

So what are some good miniatures to represent Classical Age Greeks and Persians? And are there any good rulesets that can deal with small-ish battles?

EDIT: Scale shouldn't matter. As long as the battles look good, and as long as the miniatures don't take too long to paint, then I'm fine.

I would suggest taking a look at 6mm, mainly as armies can look very good on mass, they are also very quick to paint.

Baccus are my go to guys for 6mm but know there are a few other manufacturers out there, they just don't compare in my mind. However if you end up using any phalangites go for the open handed versions and use dress makers pins.

Xyston Miniatures has some very nice 15mm figures. The smallest army rules you can use to play a decent game would be DBA

Several companies make plastic Greeks in 28mm (Warlord, Victrix, Wargames Factory), while only Wargames Factory makes Persians in plastic (their single sprue with 2 figures is on sale at a great rate).

Painting Greeks is going to be time consuming due to the style of armor they wore - unless you are content to just paint them off white & let a wash fill in the detail. The other option is to look for unarmored Greeks - painting tunics is super easy.
