I just recently learned about this game and it looks like a lot of fun and something you can have around that's easy to learn and just about anyone can play, my problem is i don't know where to start. Do i go for season 2 over the original? Add the mall expansion right away to whatever one i buy? get extra zombies for whatever one i end up buying? Any help or advice is welcome, i really regret not paying attention to kickstarter before...

I'd recommend starting with the base game, it's the simplest and has the most scenaios for it. You don't actually need or want extra zombies, most of the written scenarios are developed to use the amount of zombies included in the base box adding more zombies changes things...

I'd actually get Season 2 as your first starter box, as the rulebook includes all the rules for the Zombie Survivors where the rulebook #1 does not.

Guillotine Games has posted the rulebooks online as PDFs as well, so getting the Prison Outbreak box just for the newer printed rules isn't necessary. The online PDF errata are the most up-to-date rules (provided GG and CoolMiniOrNot don't update the rules that come with new prints of the game).

The game can be played with just the original red box Zombicide game set, and further survivors and zombie types, as well as new rules, can be found with Toxic City Mall and Prison Outbreak.

The core set is a fine place to start. There are a ton of free missions designed with Season 1 in mind, and Guillotine Games also has a good number of the survivor stat cards online.

Get season 1 but play with the rules changes from season 2. (Specifically the replacement of frying pans with billy clubs.)

Though personally I think the billy club is slightly too powerful for a starting weapon, and they should have replaced the pans with kitchen knives (1dice 4+ no unlock.)

I ended up getting season 2 as my starter and will probably expand with the mall soon enough.

The Mall expansion works better with Season 1 simply because it has the Zombivors for the original characters (and updated character sheets).

Already purchased season 2 unfortunately. After a few games i want to add more to the dynamic, really torn between the dogs and walk of the dead 2 or the mall. The mall would mainly be because i want more survivors, but the dogs and walk of the dead would just add more of the good stuff with our funking up the works. Any suggestions?

The mall will give you more Zombies and more Survivors. Dogs are nice, but not essential. They are scary though (3 zones per move!!!).

Jason Statham blew away about 8 dogs today with 4 actions, free shooting, 1 extra die per shot and the 911.

He had a 100+ kill count.

Sorry, I'm gloating. Dogs are scary as gak in this game though.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Highest kill count has been with Belle at around 80, she had the chainsaw... It was marvelous.

So I just got my first chance to play zombicide yesterday and I got to say I'm hooked! This was one of the funnest board game experiences I've ever had.

I'm thinking about picking up season 1 and toxic mall(raoul is my fav char by far). And was wondering if there's anything I really need to start off with besides season 1 starter and toxic mall makes it a more dynamic game?

That is a really good starter, i would probably get one of the walk of the dead boxes to add more zombies and maybe the zombie dogs for some variety. Other than that you are gold.

just bear in mind that, slightly counterintuitively, adding another box of zombies of the same type you already have actually makes the game easier, not harder. Most unexpected game-ending gruesome survivor bloodbaths occur when you run out of zombies to place and generate several 'all zeds extra activation's in a row trying to spawn new ones.

Definitely add in the zombie dogs at some point though. The panic that can ensue when players first see how fast the things can move is hilarious.

Yah runners caught us off guard when we played. As only 1(owner of the game) out of the 6 people playing had played a bunch. So I can't imagine how dogs would be haha. Also we pulled enough extra activations that I'm not super worried about having enough zombies to mitigate that haha. But I'm not exactly rich so the starter and toxic mall are all I can afford off the bat. Then I'll probably get a box of zombies and maybe season 2 with tax returns depending on what 40k stuff I feel I need ;p. eventually I want to own enough to do larger games, as I have a pretty big gaming group who'd be into it.

Edit:and thanks for all the help guys . It's very much appreciated!

Hahaha so after months of whinging that everyone I know is too cool for boardgames (so I would never pick any up due to thinking it might be whack) my GF caved and bought me Zombicide s1 for xmas and I roped a couple of friends into playing shortly after (she wont because she deems it far too nerdy).

So 2 weeks later and now have a boardgame group on facebook running zombicide, mansions of madness, edlritch horror, cosmic encounters and agricola (should be called punishing jerk farm) as well as a pathfinder campaign.

Getting back on topic; besides it is all zombicides fault... I really want to upgrade zombicide so it hits the table more and plan on toxic city next, followed by s2 but I wanted to know what I should be looking at in regards to picking up the smaller sets (e.g. zombie booster packs, dogs etc) in between or should I wait till I have at least toxic city going? Also where is the best place in Australia (if anyone is familiar) to pick stuff up from for cheap? My local shop is reasonably priced for most things but should I just amazon it all in bulk eventually since each box comes to about $50 AUD cheaper that way so $70 postage still saves me money? (unless it rocks up 3 weeks later banged around like some books i've ordered).

Not sure where everything came out in terms of release so figured i'd explain the back story and ask!

this boardgame thing sure got addictive fast...

If you want to expand on S1 I'd go for toxic city next as that gives you 4 new survivors and adds zombivivors for what you already have as well as all the new missions and the toxic zeds. I like the zombie dogs so personally would add them next but if you feel the games just don't have enough zombies to shoot at get an extra box of those (but you can just as easily count all the toxic zeds as normal ones if you want a bigger S1 game). Having played with the companion dogs now I would consider them a must-buy as they open up all sorts of interesting new tactics (sending a dog into a huge zed crowd and spamming all your actions ordering it to bite stuff then trading the dog card between survivors and doing it over and over with the last survivor recalling the dog to safety can kill a lot of zombies). Plus who doesn't want a dog called Bismuth.

I'd stagger the introduction of new rules just so there is less new stuff for everyone to remember.

Also, don't start painting the zombies unless you have a lot of time on your hands. I ended up having to do 223 of the little sods

Hahaha cheers on the tips, toxic city then picking up a dog pack each (and maybe varient zombie sculpts) sounds like a plan to begin with and doing it i stages to I think. We have a lot of new games going in lots of things so we are getting a bit over rule reading! haha

Yeah I'm gonna paint them up soonish (few bits of 40k to knock of first maybe) but I have a good selection of paints and washes so might just white primer them, paint wash, then ink washes over them and then just pick out details with a base, a wash and quick highlight I think, should make for some bright and cartoony / shiny minis which would go well with the boards I hope!
