Chaos vs Tau, Be'Lakor vs O'vesa, so what do you guys think?
Chaos takes it. Tau does not have much in the ways of skyfire and Jy2 has the experience edge.
Draw. Hope both Be'Lakor and O'vesa dies.
Tau for the win! There's a reason why the O'vesa-star is a top-tier GT-winning tournament build.

I have a challenge match coming up this Sunday. Jamie (aka Commander_Farsight) wants to test out his new competitive Tau against my army. I chose to accept with my Chaos Daemons, mainly because I've been playing my necrons way too much recently and also because I wanted to try out the new Be'Lakor.

Jamie and I have never played before so I really don't know his skill level. All I know is that he is a relatively new player (I think) and he's interested in playing competitively. I've also played against a lot of competitive Tau armies before, but this will be the first time I will be playing against an O'vesa-star build. I don't know much about them other than what I've seen in batreps. One thing I do know is that Tau is one of the toughest armies to play against. They have always given my armies problems and many of my toughest battles are against Taudar and the Seer Council Deldar.

I am very much looking forwards to kicking the crap out of O'vesa, that is, if he doesn't beat the gak out of my daemons first.

BTW, the game will be played this coming Sunday.

Also, my opponent can use all the help he can get. Please check out his thread to give him some pointers on how to play against daemons:

I am going to be running an O'Vesastar. My play style is to tank up the board with the O'Vesastar (O'Vesa, Farsight, Buffmander [Tau Ally], Riptide, and a second Riptide following just behind O'Vesas' unit) , and then use my other Crisis suits to JSJ hopefully getting some wounds (Crisis suits starting on the board all have twin linked MPs) Then from reserves I have a unit of 3 more Crisis Suits with TL FB and a plasma rifle. They will DS. The point of that unit is to pretty much do as much damage as possible before getting killed. I also have a squad of 10 Kroot who will come from a table edge and hopefully advance and then take an objective. Here is my list:

I understand that it is unnecessary to put all of the war gear etc. but I just copy and pasted it. I run the two Kroot Hounds because I have them and I wanted to add some flavor to the army. I know that they are pretty much pointless though. This is my first time against this opponent, but I have looked at many of his battle reports and studied the way he runs the army. Check out jy2's battle reports. He makes them of a lot of the games he plays so after this weekend you should see one of this game too. I hope that this answers you questions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Mission: Crusade - 5x Objectives

Deployment: Vanguard Strike

Initiative: Tau

-------------------------------------------------------------------

PRE-GAME THOUGHTS:

Daemons:

Both my opponent and I have 2 options for strategies:

1. Attack the troops and make sure they can't score. Then get pummeled by the offensive units.

2. Attack the offense and dangerous guys. Then worry about the troops afterwards.

Honestly, I haven't decided how I'm going to play this. Logic tells me to go after his troops, but my undying hatred of riptides tells me to kill them.

In any case, I imagine we are both going to play rather similarly - with all of our troops in reserves and with our tough units deployed on the table. Honestly, I am not too concerned about his riptides. The only one I will be concerned about is his HBC riptide.

I do need to be careful in this game, however. My opponent has a very mobile army. This is going to force me to play slightly more conservatively. I can't really over-commit my offense, only to have his troops deepstrike into my backfield and take out my troops. I need to pay very much attention to my positioning.

Overall, even though my opponent isn't very experienced, I don't expect an easy game. If he is a good tau player, then I actually expect my army to be a slight underdog in this matchup. And with ImotekhTheStormlord as a coach on his side, I'm going to treat him as a veteran Tau player. That means, don't expect me to take it easy.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Deployment:

Spoiler:
No Night-fight.

Daemon psychic powers include:

Fateweaver: Spontaneous Combustion + Prescience, Terrify + Endurance

Lord of Change: Precognition, Prescience, Flickering Fire

Warlord Traits:

Fateweaver: Re-roll Warp Storm table.

Farsight: Deepstrike with no scatter.

Excuse the proxies in the game. The dreadknights are riptides, with the swords being the ion accelerators. The wraiths in the background are the missile drones.

Jamie deploys all his riptides to the right flank. The Burstide (Riptide with Heavy Burst Cannon) is all by himself. Farsight and Buff Commander are with O'vesa and the other Iontide (Riptide with Ion Accelerator).

On the opposite flank, he deploys a unit of 3 crisis suits with TL-missile pods.

The other suits will be deepstriking and the kroots outflanking.

My deployment. Be'lakor is completely out of LOS from his riptides and I make sure to keep Fatey and Lord of Change (LoC) outside of his Burstide's threat range. I also deploy 1 unit of cultists in terrain near an objective.

Overview of our deployment, angle #1.

Overview of our deployment, angle #2.

I do not attempt to steal and we begin.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tau 1

Spoiler:

The riptides scoot to their right (towards his corner). Burstide successfully novas.

The Crisis team moves to the left (from my perspective).

Burstide actually manages to glance my grinder 3 times, though I manage to save 2 of them.

The tides then jump deeper into his deployment zone with their Assault moves.

The suits, who didn't manage to do any damage with their shooting, then moves to the left again with their Assault move.

Daemons 1

Spoiler:

Daemons advance. I expose Be'lakor defiantly, daring my opponent to take him out.

Powers:

Be'lakor - 2++, Prescience, Endurance
Fateweaver - Invisibility
LoC - Precognition

Fatey goes after the suits.

For the Warpstorm, I roll , thus giving me a free unit of daemons (I believe 9). I then deepstrike them into my opponent's deployment zone. However, they scatter off the table and mishap.

They then get destroyed, thus giving the Tau First Blood.

Fatey shoots at the Crisis team and only manage to take out 2 drones and 1 suit.

Be'lakor attempts to Puppet Master the O'vesa-star but it gets denied by the Talisman.

Grinders run forwards.

Tau 2

Spoiler:

Fusion suits land behind a grinder. They actually scatter away, but 1 suits is still within melta double-tap range.

Kroots come in on the side of Fateweaver.

Suits move.

Tides shuffle around, scooting deeper into his deployment zone again. Against, his Burstide successfully novas.

Burstide manages to pen my right grinder only once, but that is all he needs to explode it.

Fusion suits then explode the other grinder by shooting it up the drive shaft.

Kroots and suits fire at Fatey, managing to ground him. The O'vesa-star then shoot at him with their cover-ignoring firepower and take off 2 of his Wounds.

The O'vesa-star tries to get away from Be'lakor and his maledictions, but only manage to jump a paltry 4", not far enough.

Fusion suits make their assault moves.

Excellent turn of shooting for my opponent despite his limited firepower. I really did not expect to lose 2 grinders in just 1 turn. That just may have changed things. Now I'm going to have to leave 1 of my FMC's in my backfield to deal with his incoming troops.

Daemons 2

Spoiler:

1 unit of horrors come in. They scatter into the ruins and 2 die to dangerous terrain.

I really need my helturkey to come in but unfortunately, it doesn't.

Fatey casts Terrify on the suits, who then fail Morale and run off the table!

Other powers:

Fateweaver - Endurance
Be'lakor - fails the Grimoire even with Fatey's re-roll!, Prescience (from LoC)
LoC - Precognition

Be'lakor tries to Hallucinate the O'vesa-star but he gets denied once again!

Doesn't matter that Be'lakor only has a 5++ now, I still play very aggressively with my 2 FMC's and shove them both right into his face.

Fatey glides back to deal with the suits.

In shooting, cultists fail to cause any unsaved wounds.

Horrors fail their psychic test to cast Flickering Fire.

Fatey's attempt to cast Flickering Fire gets denied. However, he does manage to get off Bolt of Tzeentch. It is only S7 and I do 1W to each suit.

As for my other 2 FMC's, they have no luck against the Talisman, which denies both their attempts at Puppet Master and Flickering Fire.

I have no choice but to assault with Fatey. Should have wiped out those suits with my shooting, but it is what it is.

Fortunately for me, I hit both times, kill 2 suits and then sweep the unit.

So it is 2 soulgrinders for 2 units of 3 suits. That is a trade that I would gladly make.

However, Be'lakor may just be in trouble though....

Tau 3

Spoiler:

Only 1 suit comes in.

My opponent's strategy for this turn is to try to take out Be'lakor, who is quite vulnerable at this time.

All 3 riptides nova, with O'vesa and the Iontide going with the 3++ and his Burstide going with 12 Heavy Burst Cannon shots.

His Commander makes the unit Stubborn.

Kroots go after the horrors.

The Tau focus on Be'lakor but they fail to ground him. The Burstide actually does 5-6W of damage. However, what my opponent forgets is that Be'lakor has Shroud and he is in area terrain (or he could jink) for 3+ cover. I only lose a total of 1W from the O'vesa-star and the Burstide's shooting.

Kroots shoot down 1 horror only.

Riptides then do their assault moves, with the Burstide jumping in front to screen off his deathstar (ironic, isn't it, that a deathstar would need a screening unit? ).

Next turn, I am going to do some evil things to the Tau. Muahahahaha.....

Daemons 3

Spoiler:

Horros come in and scatter away from the middle objective.

Helturkey finally comes in.

This turn, Be'lakor is 2++ from the Grimoire once again.

He tries to cast Terrify and Hallucination but both attempts get blocked by the Talisman.

The LoC glides behind the LOS-blocking terrain, where his Tau Commander is hiding. This will also protect me from his Overwatch.

Horrors move towards the objective.

Fatey swoops after the riptides.

Shooting from the helturkey and horrors wipe out the kroots.

The O'vesa-star finally fails to deny a psychic power for the 1st turn in this game. They deny Flickering Fire from Fatey but fail to deny it from my LoC. He then takes 1W on his Buff Commander, 1W on O'vesa and loses 1 missile drone to Look-Out-Sirs.

I then make my assaults. Be'lakor, who only lost 1W last turn with only a 5++ save, loses 2W this turn to Overwatch with a 2++ save.

He then slaughters the Burstide.

The LoC assaults as well. I issue a challenge, my opponent declines and I take Farsight out of the fight. I then opt to Smash so his Commander is forced to LOS the blows to O'vesa, who then loses another 2W despite 3++ and 5+ FNP.

After combat, his deathstar Hit-&-Runs out of combat.

The Tau are in a world of hurt right now. He's lost his strongest weapon against my FMC's - his Burstide - and is fast losing his troops, especially with my helturkey around. Can my opponent still pull off what would appear to me as a miracle comeback? Hmmmm....

Tau 4

Spoiler:

The rest of his troops come in.

Unfortunately for my opponent, both riptides fail their nova attempts, though I believe we forget to use the Earthcaste wargear to re-roll for O'vesa (who is down to just 1W remaining now).

His deathstar then moves towards my deployment zone.

Shooting fails to take out Be'lakor thanks to his 2++ and also to the fact that O'vesa could not see him due to terrain.

I tempt my opponent with the fact that both of his crisis suits are in the rear arc of my flying warp dragon. It is a temptation that he cannot resist. Unfortunately for him, they both miss.

The suits then do their assault moves.

Riptides continue to move away from my FMC's.

Daemons 4

Spoiler:

I put in the finishing touches with a successful Hallucination attempt by Be'lakor. Hallucination pins the deathstar in place.

That would be game.

LoC swoops. It will be next turn before I can kill off his deathstar.

Fatey swoops, going after his scoring suit.

Horrors stretch out to both claim the objective and to be able to shoot at his scoring unit.

They don't survive.

By the ways, my helturkey vector-strikes his last crisis suit (and his last scoring unit as well) and finishes him off.

No more troops for Tau.

For Assault, Be'lakor attempts the charge but fails.

Tau 5

Spoiler:

Being pinned, there's not much my opponent can do. He opts to shoot at the cultists, killing 3, in the hopes of making them run....

....and he succeeds! They run off the table.

Daemons 5

Spoiler:

The end is nigh.

Fatey takes off 2W from the iontide with shooting.

Last but not least, we go to assault. Both Be'lakor and the LoC make the charge.

In combat, I finish off Farsight and O'vesa and my opponent fails to Hit-&-Run out of combat.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

We stop the game here because 1) my opponent had to leave and 2) there is no need to play out the inevitable tabling.

I have 2 objectives to my opponent's 0. I also have Warlord and Linebreaker (my horror). My opponent has First Blood and I give him Linebreaker as well.

Daemons take it 8-2.

Total Daemonation by the Forces of Chaos!!!

I am very excited for the upcoming match on Sunday. I am a new player to wh40k and would love to start playing more competitively. This will be only my second real match (with a full point value of 1750, not 750 point skirmishes). My first match was against William's Deldar Seer Council. I feel like I was able to get more experience under my belt, and truly test out the power of the Tau. I understand that Jim is a veteran player who is very experienced.

I have gotten and education over this week on how Daemons are played and what to watch out for (thanks for posting a link to my thread ) I would love to win, but I am not getting my hopes up. For me I would love to come away from this game with more experience. It will also be a great opportunity for me to learn my army much more.

I to am looking foreword to kicking the crap out of Fateweaver or Be'lakor, as long as O'Vesa and Farsight don't go down first. This should be a really great match! Oh and my list is set, not subject to change for this game.

Also, you haven't already, make sure to vote at the top, I am curious to see what people think the outcome will be.

Well, my vote is on jy2. I think with a skilled an experienced player the O'VesaStar list can take on Jy2's list, but in this instance I've voting on the player, not the list.

I'll head on over to his thread and see if I can give him some helpful advice.

Just played against Grant's super tough Deer Council Deldar build tonight. In this game, I actually brought FMC-spam daemons with Fateweaver, Belakor, the Black Mace Daemon Prince, heldrake and 2 Tzeentch DP's. Grant took out his new seer council with 3 wraithknights. It was a tough, tough fight. Look out for the BR in the future.

BTW, Commander_Farsight will have a coach with him for the game and it will be none other than ImotekhTheStormlord. So it's going to be almost like a 2 on 1.

Wow, now that's what I call ambitious. A new player just getting in the game and already he's playing against not only a seasoned tournament vet, but a GT winner as well and in only his 2nd game. However, experienced or not, I won't show any mercy and I definitely won't under-estimate any Tau army because the only way to learn is if you play against someone who tries his best. But don't worry, I will be like a secondary coach to you and give you some pointers.

You're going to learn first-hand what daemon shenanigans are. Yes, all the good armies have it - elder, tau, daemons and necrons.

Ricter wrote:

I don't normally get cocky, but you never know. But I agree that it is definitely a winnable game, especially in the hands of an experienced player. Actually, in the hands of an experienced Tau player, I would even go so far as to say that my daemons would be the underdog in this matchup.

I'm actually not going to put too much stock in my malediction powers. If they go off, then I will consider it as a bonus.

Just tonight, I had to play against the Seer Council with Runes of Warding, Fortune and grisly trophies. That's a 3+ re-rollable Deny the Witch with re-rollable LD tests in the case that he needs it. So I consider the ECPA rather tame compared to the seer council's anti-psyker defense.

Looks like a good game and a good learning experience. Either way it should be interesting MTO (yes I am using your acronym, it sounds like a band, so even better) style lists always give interesting games and the Tau have enough mobility from jumps and DS to really split Jy2's engagement front.

Like most competitive games its all the set up and initiative that will determine this. If there is a lot of BLOS terrain then demons should be set but without it, or a turn to get to some or power up the tau list will shred them. Bel'akor gets pwned to the buff commander\burst canon riptide hard lol. So he needs to avoid that at all costs.

Sounds like a coaching game though, with him having a tutor and jy2 already promising tips so the outcome doesn't really matter. Should be fun though, maybe more entertaining this way. I often find practice matches much closer and entertaining then actual event matches.

Lets see if any more chairs get abused at game castle

I wouldn't be surprised if another chair was crunched like the other one...
I too am hoping that it will still be a fun game even though I will be getting coached. I think that it will be a great learning experience for me because I will be able to get advice from not only one but two amazing players. This should be a really good game, especially because Imotech and I have been studying the army sooooo much. I hope it will be entertaining for people too when the see the battle report.

I'm just an ambitious person. Honestly I'm really excited to get another crack at playing my army, especially against Daemons. Big thanks to Zagman and thanatos on the how to beat chaos daemons thread, you both have greatly helped me understand what to do. Lord of Change will not be in the game for very long

jy2, thanks for taking your time to play against me (+Imotech). I will really appreciate your help. Thanks

Just for clarity, the ECPA does nothing against psychic powers. It gives rerolls for gets hot and nova reactor. The talisman of moloch is what gives 4d6 DtW which of course affects more than maledictions as puppet master and shriek are witchfires.

Question about the Talisman. I am not familiar with it at all and don't own the Farsight supplement.

Does the Talisman only work for the unit who has it, or does it affect nearby units as well?

Also, say one has a farseer joined to the unit as well. Then would it be 4D6 denying on a 4+/5+ each or just 4D6 denying on a 6+?

Thanks.

All units withing 12 get the bonus, the farseer doesn't have a psychic hood. I think you would be able to to do 4d6 deny on 4+/5+ if you took a space marine libby.

You're correct on the Talisman.

That was quite the interesting game... I have a few thoughts I would like to share, but I will wait until the public can see the outcome of the match. It was close all the way until the last turn.

Looking good for Tau atm I predict overall a minor victory to jy2 simply because of more experience.

I hate laughing at someones expense but I almost choked on my coffee when I read that warp storm mess.

The chaos gods giveth and taketh away! OMG what a mix up.

Couple that with your antics in the escalation video bending over asking for the "D" and you have been costing me delicious imported coffee as of late my friend!

Very interested to see what Bel'Akor can do to turn this around. That talisman is crazy effective.

Jamie's Talisman saves were on fire! He must've denied my 1st 6 or 7 attempts at doing anything to his riptides with psychic powers.

Too bad Be'lakor isn't Tzeentch. It would've been awesome if he was.
