Rougher transitions are style in and of themselves when done well, I’ve always thought it a shame that wargamers treat super smooth blends as though it’s the ideal. In more traditional art the focus tends to be on value first, colour second, and blending is an artistic choice.

I’ve always wanted an oil-painting style army with rough blends, but I lack the artistic ability to do it right and most people would just think it messy rather than appreciate it for being an artistic style.

Indeed, that's what I mean by otherwise high artistic values in things like Blanchitsu, Inq28, Dark AoS and other similar movements that often operate with deliberately rough results. It feels great and looks like "proper art", but it won't score highly in any competition that values perfect blending or the number of colour transitions crammed onto the smallest area possible. With the advent of widespread airbrushing becoming a part of the expected baseline for "good painting", this sometimes gets even weirder.

Well its a beautiful miniature Sherrypie, regardless of what the 'fashion' for painting comps is at the moment!

Just a fun diorama/objective marker I've put together. It shows a recon unit of World Eaters out on patrol. They are happy that they'll remain undetected in their new low-signature mk6 armour, but they've failed to spot a Grot squig herder returning with his herd and who has now seen them!

The colour scheme was recommended to me on another forum as its a reference to an old Rogue Trader-era camo pattern.

Very cool. The bright camo scheme works well at this scale.

One thing I'm struggling with my DKOK, if I use the same muted tones I use on my 40k DKOK, at Epic scale the models are basically invisible, I might as well use empty bases because at a couple of feet away the models don't stand out at all

I'm trying to decide whether I go for a more vibrant scheme on the DKOK or go the other way and stick with the muted tones but have bright bases (desert bases, red mars style bases, or something like that) so that the dark DKOK contrast against the bases (but then I want to carry that basing method through to any other armies!).

Yep that is also something I have struggled with and especially with historical gaming/modern era as you can end up with an invisible army haha.

I would say, especially as we are dealing with fantastical worlds here and you shouldn't have rivet-counters breathing down your neck over the wrong shade of brown, I would go with what looks good and makes them stand out. At that scale you really need some level of contrast, even if its just for being able to see which miniatures you are picking up!

A 3d print 'beaky specialists' or something like that, I got from a dude on Facebook. I had a couple left of marines left over from some field police units I did.

@Allseeingskink

Thanks! Its from vanguard miniatures and their terrain section, this set in particular:

A very nice kit I think. Pretty modular.

Finished off my Snakebite Clan with the centrepiece for them, a Mega Squiggoth

*I messed up some of the photoshopping of the trees in the background - there is something poking from a tree if you can spot it?

The 'Mega Squiggoth' and Wildboyz are from Vanguard Miniatures 'Skinner' range. The Mega Squiggoth has some minor conversions (the gun on top I think is from a 2nd edition 40k Ork kustom gun, so has been in the bits box for a bloody long time!) You actually get some of those Orks with guns in the set, its a really nice kit. The South Asian-style wooden buildings are 3D prints from Mighty-minis-uk.com (who I think are fast becoming an essential destination if you are collecting Epic).

Looks great as always!

Are those Skinners a bit bigger than the other Vanguard models? They look to be. I was disappointed with how small the Novan Siegers were (though they're probably good next to the old 90's Epic models, they're small next to the 8mm stuff I'm printing).

Thanks man! Haha yes that's what he will now be known as.

Yes they are a mm or two bigger than the older Vanguard Skinners. I know not why (complete supposition, but I've noticed some of the older ones with very fine detail have either stopped being sold or else are constantly out of stock, like the kommandoes, so maybe too many were lost in production as miscasts?). I mixed them in with some standard Vanguard boyz (and even some old Epic ones!) - as they look quite ragtag anyway hopefully its not as noticeable as it would be if you had marines at different scales for instance.

Ah that is fantastic news, well deserved even if it was a small field haha. Are you planning on fielding that bad boy in both Epic and AT?

I keep reading comments about an official GW Epic release of 30k next year (most recent was a 'definitely coming'). I have no doubt at all this will be timed to kill the Great Crusade Epic event I am due to be running in early March, but has anyone else heard anything concrete?
Will be really interesting to see which ruleset gets used as an influence for the new system, assuming its not a completely new one.

I remain ever doubtful of new Epic becoming a thing before AT expands to xenos factions. Their previous work, Apocalypse, was a mash of various editions with hidden orders but E:A style weapons. Hard to say which direction it'd take, but at least it surely would streamline the assault procedures

As for the big fella, I need to at least paint some gun arms for it as well before fielding it as an Imperator-lookalike in a titan legio list for Epic.

Printed up a couple of Falchions. I decided to upscale them a bit because, come on, these things are supposed to have 4 damage capacity I tried to go for the old Epic vibe (where Superheavy tanks were roughly as tough as Warhound Titans minus the shields and 4 times tougher than Knights). I feel like 40k has downsized the Superheavy tanks and made them a bit wussy.

But maybe I overcooked it a bit and went too big? LOL.

Quite a slog tonight. friend of mine used his 3d printer to put together a 3rd ed style armored company. since it ended up being 3,500 points we just did a mini apocalypse game with halved ranges.

He had 8 leman russes of various loadouts and 2 bane blades

i brought craft world Iyanden from the 4th ed codex. a farseer on a bike, lynx, 3 fire prisms, 3 wave serpents with wraithguard/wraith seer, a revenant titan, and 3 crimson hunters

We did a ton of shaking, stunning and ripping weapons off of each other. good fun, the eldar started out behind and started to turn it around near the end, but it wasn't enough-guard won but at a high cost.

More pics will be up soon in my old editions 40K topic.

This thread makes me sad, I was a huge epic player back in the day, I had a ton of forces and loved imperial guard heavy tanks and artillery.
In St Louis, there were more players playing epic than there were playing 40k at one point, but the revision when they gutted the system
caused a local exodus of the game and it never recovered. But I do love seeing everyone's pictures of their stuff.

I can link to external URLs Gitdakka, what site are you using?

@AllSeeingSkink - I think those look great and the scale looks fine! I definitely liked one of the changes to NetEpic (from SM/TL) that saw Super Heavies and other Praetorians (as they were then named) getting that extra durability, it always felt wrong some basic infantry flanking a Baneblade before and popping it with one shot in the weak rear armour! I think its the same in EA isn't it as well they are a bit tougher, so I think the scale works well to represent that.

@aphyon - that looks awesome I love the idea of a massive tank battle.

I have made final plans for a big Epic participation/expo game in March 23- hope no-one minds me posting the details here. Basically the idea is for people who want to give Epic a go but perhaps have never had the opportunity (maybe if its many years since they have played or they were not even born at the time!) So this is an opportunity to come and take control of some titans, an infantry or armoured company etc. as part of a massive battle. Myself and a couple of buddies are running the game, it's completely free and you can just drop in and out etc.
Would be great to see any Dakkanauts if they have the opportunity to come!

Well that is a fine start.....for a small guard detachment. now you need- troopers, hydras, hellhounds, sentinels, air support, more artillery etc...

Fair criticism, this is only about 1100pts worth of tanks (in 3rd edition).

Infantry is in the mail from Vanguard (even though I complained about their not-DKOK being too small, I bought a pile of them, lol). Not sure about what other tanks I'd like in the force... they always take me a while to clean up and support (seems my Chimera supports weren't great, a lot of them are misprinted on the bottom, but it's not too visible from above).

I'll probably stop when I get to 2 or 3k points to move on to something else. Also got a Knight detachment and 2x Warhounds in the works, plus the Ultramarines that can all ally with these guys.

Air Support is already here...

I prefer the marauder destroyer over the bomber.
The venerable old T-bolts are a workhorse.

My guard units rely on the praetors and vendettas to deal with air threats. my biggest air wing belongs to my marines-3 t-hawks, 2 storm eagles, 2 storm hawks, 2 xiphons

I have a couple of Destroyers, only 1 painted though. My Imperials have 2 regular Marauders, 1 Destroyer, 8 Thunderbolts (half in desert camo, half in the grey camo), 4 Lightnings, and an Arvus. Unpainted got another 2 regular Marauders, 1 Destroyer, 2 Lightnings, 4 Valkyries and another Arvus.

Not doing a great job at keeping up with the painting, lol. I could probably stop printing now and still have a year's worth of painting to do.

I am starting to print a Tyranid army... partly because I like nids and partly because I reckon they'll be a super fast army to get on the table to go up against these guys for when I want to do intro games and whatnot. The 3D models out there for Tyranids aren't as good. Some are great, many look like low res scans of 28mm models.

I used the 3 month lockdown in 2020 to get all my main painting done. now i just do whatever i get new and get it done.

Just painted up 3 of the station forge version of the admech dune crawler for our full scale 5th ed games.

Took me a couple days to go from parts to finished. lots of magnets.

Nice!

Lockdown for me sucked, I was working from home which made the line between "work" and "home" blurry and I didn't get much hobby stuff done. Find it easier to paint stuff when I was actually going to work and spending an hour after work once or twice a week.

I'm printing like a madman now because... 1. My printer has been very reliable (knock on wood), gotten through about 12 prints now without a major failure requiring draining of the vat. Just keep topping up the resin and on to the next print. That might change because I'm printing something new next. 2. I'm on Christmas/New Years break and I find it difficult to find time to print when I'm working.

Once the holidays are over in a week or two I'll likely swap from printing back to painting... or if the printer decides to fail and I can't be arsed cleaning it, lol.
