Has anyone found a good (and safe to download) way to play Final Liberation on a modern operating system? It was a great game and I would love to play it again now that I have found interest in the tabletop version, but it's just soooo old. I don't have the savvy to get it to run on a modern pc.

From memory, I think the last time I tried to get it to run on my machine, I had to set up a VM. It was a pain in the bum.

Oddly enough I installed it (from the original CD) and it plays fine on a laptop I have, running WIndows 7 64bit.

Well, there is always the possibility of getting my old CD from the parents house and trying a Hail Mary.

Damn. 64-bit error on the install attempt.
Looks like it's either time to give up on the nostalgia, or try to get an older tower running ME or XP

Depending on your level of Windows you are running, you can get Virtual PC with a pre-configured XP VM running. That's how I got it running last time IIRC.

People wondering how to get Final Liberation working under 64 bit OS I have found a solution. I got it working with my Windows Ultimate 64 bit SP1.
1. First install the game on 32 bit OS. I did this using the built in XP Mode with Virtual PC.
2. Install the Official Patch 1.01 from this site: http://www.reocities.com/TimesSquare/Galaxy/6777/flpatch.html
Don't install the international fix because then you won't be able to intall the unofficial patch!
3. Install the unofficial fl_highcolor_patch.zip from this site: http://bitpatch.com/gw.html
4. Copy the MUSIC and VIDEO folder from the CD and place inside the root directory of the game
5. Copy the the game folder and all it's contents from 32 bit OS to 64 bit OS. When you run the Epic40k.exe, the game complains that the game is not installed. Just hit ok and the game runs anyway! Also the last patch fixed the videos in that game so everything works smoothly. Enjoy!
However if the game crashes, black screen or error message, you can try to find a workaround by creating the epic. ini file yourself and disable the video. Here are the instructions for that procedure: http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=1539
I have to note that I was very happy to find out that this game is possible to get running under 64 bit OS. Cheers!

Excellent advice - wouldn't have thought of that. Tried it myself and it works beautifully (although you can just as easily run it inside of XP mode if you wanted).

I couldn't get full screen mode (I suppose this game only has full screen mode natively supported) of that game to work properly within XP Mode's full screen mode. I got either black borders and small window inside those borders when in full screen or just a small window when using XP Mode's window mode. Probably window size was something like 640x480 in either cases so the game wasn't streched in full screen but was in actual pixel size all the time.
How does the XP Mode work for you, filbert?

Hmm, I shall have to try it. Now where did I put that copy of FL?

Last time I played it, it ran perfectly in XP mode - full screen was fine.

In that case I might at some point (maybe never but hey, who knows...) try to figure my own issue on that matter...Not because I want to play that game in XP Mode because it works perfecly well on WIN7 but because I am interested in what is my problem and how it is possible to be solved because solving that might help figuring out future related issues and help to expand the understanding of things...Also if anyone has a solution to this already, point me at it. Thanks!
